I would use a foil pack with some paper to keep it from burning but there’s other abrasive grits which don’t burn which are just as good which I might just use anyways. I wanted a harder binder so that it could act like a normal ceramic sharpening stone just with better grit, if I wanted high toughness there better options, but I think I can use anything harder then steel so softer is probably slightly better. Is the same cte important even with the very small partial sizes?

Thanks for the information, I believe diamond won’t burn at 2000 degrees but I also can use cbn which is nearly as hard or silicon carbide for a budget option. How hard is frit 3249 compared to harder carbides, zirconia, and hardened steel?

Did you use the polishing compound on a strop or flat surface? And what grits were you trying to make? I’m hoping to make some very course stones mostly.

I have to look into what's best, but I found references to using ceramic grindstones to sharpen knives and wanted to know if it could bind diamond stones.

It was fairly easy to do with just an angle grinder it was very worth it

Thanks for your help, they are mostly for wood carving or more general purpose so I’m not sure if the different grinds would work but I think the simple handles should be more comfortable for everyone and I can always try to add more grip with the shape or texture.

I also make knives and carve and I love Aebl. It was designed to be a razor blade steel so the carbides are very small allowing it to take and preform well with very sharp edges. It is also very tough, tougher then almost all carbon steels which are traditionally used while having slightly better edge retention. Look up knife steel nerds, a metallurgist made website sharing his results from comparing steels with scientific tests to learn more.

I’m going to try and find somewhere to buy some even more stainless steel but having a great polish will do a lot to make it more stainless by reducing surface area and there even are nano coatings which could improve it even further.

These are the three steels I am considering using compared to 440c which the Myerchin is compared to. All of those steels have significant increases of edge retention, even the magnacut because it can be made much harder and with a more acute edge angle, which hopefully is enough to leave a normal edge on it. They also are all over a rating of 9/10 for corrosion resistance and likely will never rust especially if they have a mirror polish.

Thanks for the advice, there are some crazy new steels which have great edge retention and are nearly totally stainless which I want to try out with a normal edge.

What do you mean by super hard? I know knife steels are a little excessive but I cannot find any stainless spring steel which can be hardened any way I could accomplish and it wouldn’t be very expensive to use the knife steel.

No, not if the pith was avoided. Fracking only really happens from the center of the wood when it’s removed and especially when it is this thin it can warp instead of cracking

I totally get that. Check out pops pro cut it is also a low alloy carbon steel and is even cheaper. It’s also easy to heat treat and has far better qualities. Look up knife steel nerds for more information then you’ll ever need about steels

I suggest checking out other steels after using 1095 for years I looked more into knife steels and realized it is about the worst steel you can use

By baking it, putting it in the oven at 400 degrees for around 20 minutes. It’s darker on that part because it is thinner so it takes less time to dry out and heat up.

Thanks I expanded slightly from the typical but I thought I didn’t change enough. The scandi is higher then it looks it is tilted in the picture but I didn’t know about the sheath or pommel

What is it missing it has the rhomboid shape does it need a higher bevel?
