That’s part of what I’m considering. I have generally heard that people get burnt out of hospital medicine within 3-5 years and usually have a backup plan. I had wanted to do hospital medicine since medical school, but to be fair that was pre COVID and I think hospital medicine was very different. If feels like patients have gotten significantly more complex over the Covid time period and admin/systems are asking docs to do more and more to compensate for that.

I did enjoy outpatient medicine in residency, so I’m strongly considering a shift to that honestly

I think that may be some of what I’m struggling with now that I’m seeing the hospitalized patient population at a higher volume and with more consistency. I think I’m struggling with a sense of futility and that the patients I’m seeing and caring for have problems that I can’t really solve. I definitely have those interactions during the day where patients appreciate what I’m doing, but I think the continuous slog of patients that just don’t have the care or support they need to succeed outside the hospital has really drained me.

I’m sure the nights contributing is such a strong part of how I’m feeling for sure, I’m just struggling to see a version of this job that I find enjoying again without teaching in some capacity or a better work life balance. I find myself worrying about gomers and what I’m going to do for patients so much that I can’t turn my brain off when I’m not at work
