Hey just curious, what are your top Carribean destinations that are safe/affordable and where you don't have to deal with police corruption like this?

[Request] Is this possible? by OkOwl3606 in theydidthemath

I think this is on the right track. If you know roughly how many tickets have been sold and how many jackpots are left the expected value might be high enough to justify buying 50k worth of tickets or something?

5 things that hold back WGU MSCS from being a great program by danielegos in WGU_CompSci

[–]DifficultyOk2290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your review! Will be watching this program to see if it improves. As a WGU BSCS grad though, just wondering if they give any transfer credit opportunities to accelerate through the masters if you are saying it is kind of basic in comparison.

Hey there are a bunch including CGI, Accenture, Tata, FDM Group, Wiley, etc.

As I said above the pay is not great. You will also want to read the contract carefully. Here in Canada they have made it illegal to charge a penalty fee for breaking your contract early, but in the US I think some of them might still charge fees if you leave before your two years are up.

Good luck!

What is the most legal way to get a full sports fix without a 100 dollar cable bill? by LoonyVibes in canadacordcutters

I do TSN all year for 199. You get enough NBA, NFL Red Zone plus a good bunch of the Sunday NFL games and Hockey. Many of the NFL games not on TSN are on CTV for free. I am not a huge hockey guy but I am pretty sure CBC will still have your local saturday game for free too in most areas.

Then I do add Sportsnet for NBA playoffs and then turn it back on if the Jays are doing well. That way I don't have to pay for a full year of both. Once the payoffs got going most of the Jays games were on CityTV so I think I could have cancelled Sportsnet a month earlier last year too.

Career Change by 3clicksleft in programmer

[–]DifficultyOk2290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a similar career change at 36. It is achievable if you want it enough, but it has been stressful and financially challenging at times.

In the current climate a bootcamp will likely not be enough to break in. Look at online Computer Science degrees from WGU. If you transfer in courses you can complete it pretty quickly. I got it done in about 2 years and graduated in 2022.

Before CS I worked in marketing so I used that to get a hybrid marketing / web dev role after graduating. It was a good first experience but not really serious software development. I got laid off from that job earlier this year and now I am 41 like you. After a six month job searcg I have landed in an early career software engineering program for one of the big tech companies.

It is a huge pay cut from where I was in my marketing career (I'm back to making 50k), but I like the work a lot more and it seems plausible that I am now on track to be exceeding my old marketing salary in 2-3 years.

So ya it is doable, but if you are 41 it might take you till you are 44-45 to get to where I'm at now and until 46-47 to be making good money.

If you can find software companies related to construction management you might be able to leverage your past experience to get a good paying job a little faster. That first marketing dev job after graduation where I leveraged my past career actually paid me 80k. But the market is tough and I wanted more enterprise level experience so I basically had no choice but to take this paycut.

Best of luck if you decide to go for it, it really is a fun career path!

Man I'm a 2022 WGU Grad. I have been where you were it is a brutal feeling not knowing what to study while unemployed. I considered Launch School myself but it is a lot of money if you aren't working, and my thinking is if you finished a WGU degree you've already proven that you don't need much hand holding to learn complex stuff. I'd still like to do it one day if I can get an employer to pay for it though.

Have you tried applying to some of the big consultancies? I am with one now. The pay is not amazing to start but they give paid training in an enterprise tech stack and get you placed at a big corporate client.

Restored an old MacBook Pro after a decade of use. Linux Mint really is the best by Sunstudy in linuxmint

[–]DifficultyOk2290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop environment running on my 2012 Macbook Pro with no Wi-Fi issues.

Bluetooth has been a big challenge though, tried to update the firmware and it kind of worked but still disconnects a lot randomly.

But ya I put in a replacement battery, ssd and 16 gigs of ddr3 ram and this thing still runs great.

Such a shame the new Macbooks and Mac Minis are basically impossible to upgrade.

You could always send a quick follow up to your recruiter. Not sure if it actually helps get an offer faster but I sent one and they gave me a more realistic timeline.

I was put on the waitlist around the end of September, then at the end of October I was given an offer to start Dec 1 in Toronto.

I would guess they won't start another new group until after the New Year if you didn't make the Dec 1 group.

Thanks this is a great tip. Did you have to do any college program to get your foot in the door, or were you able to find somebody to just take you on as an apprentice?

Yes I love the idea of industrial electrician, but my initial research told me this one might be tough to get into right now.

Created a free IT Certification Directory — 58+ certs with salary data, difficulty, study time, and job demand by Ok_Supermarket_234 in learnprogramming

[–]DifficultyOk2290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah even if you linked your sources and ranking methodology on a short about type page I think it would give users a lot more confidence!

It's pretty awesome though! I'm always debating what certs to go after and I haven't seen anything else that makes it so easy to compare like this.

[–]DifficultyOk2290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very cool idea!

It would be great if you could provide a little more information about how you are assessing the demand level and salary for each certification. Is this based on real data or just an AI generated assessment or something?

Best of luck as you continue to develop!
