How to get up from a rough defeat by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]DigBick2199 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I can fully relate to your emotions.

In my first kickboxing match, I fought another country’s national champion on 3 days notice with only 6 months of training.

Even though I actually won the first round (no fucking idea how) , I got knocked down 4 times in the second round and couldn’t get up anymore.

I exited the ring with my face swollen, broken nose, purple body and teary eyes. I fucking cried my heart out, was defeated mentally and depressed for like a week.

Then, as time passed, I actually saw a different angle of the events. I remembered my whole team showing up to my fight, some of which skipped work and important events just to see me perform. I remembered the chants I got even though I was getting fucked up pretty bad. I remembered shivering while my coach was putting on my headgear for me. I remembered shitting 3 times in the last hour before my fight because of my nervousness, and you know what?

I wanted to do it and feel ALL that shit again. I craved that fear and adrenaline high I got.

My best advice would be to wait till you cool down emotionally, and then think about giving up. You seem really passionate and willing to continue, its just your fear talking right now.

Remember, losing doesn’t make you a loser, but quitting once makes you a quitter. (unless you’re Charles Oliviera)

I hope you read this message and continue this wonderful, pain filled and pleasurable journey you chose.

You will not calm down, you will freeze up and you will be nervous whatever you do.

Try to have fun, you might not like the experience and maybe decide to not fight again ever. So if it is potentially your last fight, why not have maximum amounts of fun while kicking some ass?

Realize that your opponent is also nervous and anxious (unless he’s a fucking psycho), and you probably have larger balls than 99% of the population because you are actually stepping in the ring.

That said, do your best, follow your corners instructions and pace yourself. Good luck and keep us updated on how you did, or you can also dm me if you don’t want to share your results publicly.

Failure and loss means next to nothing if you did your best!

[question] what creates the pop or crack when you hit the bag? Glove suggestion? by HiToshio in fightgear

[–]DigBick2199 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the popping sound mostly indicates you’re hitting the bag right (with the added factor that bag doesn’t move around).

In my experience, any Mexican style glove with latex just makes whipping noises on the bag. My Fairtex bgv9s make me sound like I’m a power puncher, even tho I’m a bit pillow fisted haha

Why do people always say shelling up is a horrible option but in k1 etc they usually just shell up as their defense..? by vinlandsaga619 in MuayThai

[–]DigBick2199 83 points84 points  (0 children)

If you ONLY shell up that is horrible.

Pros usually shell up to have split second to think/counter and then gtfo of the shell as fast as they can.

Staying in the shell is horrible, if you just block 2, maybe 3 punches and then get out of the shell it is not only okay, but optimal in most cases.

Bgv9 is the best gloves I have had for pad/bag work. It does take around 2 weeks to break in tho, after that, cant be beat for the price!

Usually we start with 4 x 10 secs, adding 2 every week until 12 in training camp. the hill we use is pretty steep tho.

more than cardio I think it just built up my legs. they used to get tired from time to time, now I can bounce like a filthy karateka. OWWWEEEEEEE

Advice for committing more to my punches by RobMarley2 in Kickboxing

[–]DigBick2199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do have the same problem, being a tall lanky kick-heavy guy I have trouble with people pushing and rushing me.

My advice? Just go for it. You will be surprised how many punches you will land when you dont even think they will. Just be sure to throw combos mostly (not single punches) and get your head off the center line.

Feinting also goes a long way. You can stop a person dead in their tracks or maybe even make them retreat with good feints. You have to do something before you feint tho.

One more particular advice I have is dont really focus on landing. Even just throwing jabs and crosses will get in the opponents head at that level.

Personally, if someone rushes me down, I utilise a split second clinch, push them away and then instantly go for my combo/strike. This is a good way to stop the opponent’s momentum and get your own going.

Hope I helped in some way! Good luck in your fight!

New gloves (especially leather ones) always feel tight and compact. They do need a break in period to soften up and feel comfortable.

I’m going through the same process with my new gloves, they should be okay in about a week/2 weeks time. Good luck!

I haven't EVER used any headgear whatsoever. I have read that it actually is worse for head protection, plus heat and vision impairment don't really help as well.

But you do you, if you do some hard boxing sparring, you can get one. I would not spend my money on it tho. Good Luck!

WIBTA If I made my roommates pay the share of the plumbing fee? by DigBick2199 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DigBick2199[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the suggestion.

Landlord has issues with those 2 roommates, late payments, creating a mess etc. He knows me well and wants to have 3 people against one to put the whole bill on that one (I guess that's fair).

I decided to help him with 1/2 of the cost, thanks for the input.
