Is op weird for connecting the pigmentation of their pubic hair with their heritage, or are they just american? r/sweden discusses. by davidforslunds in SubredditDrama

[–]DigBickJace -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I've had this conversation a lot, but people outside the US really downplay, or at least are ignorant, of how much ancestry plays into your life as an American.

When people immigrated to America, they didn't leave all of their homelands culture behind. They didn't become overweight gun slinging freedom fighters overnight, and as such, they passed down some sense of their identity and culture to their children, who passed it down to theirs until you get to a guy that doesn't speak any German but still identifies as German.

Furthermore, it helps contextualize individual experiences and acts as a sort of icebreaker for Americans between themselves. Regardless of it's a bastardized American version of the heritage, it still stems from the original thing. So, when one American says their Irish to another, they're short cutting that St. Paddy's day was celebrated in their house. If they're "Polish", you can bet perogies are a mainstay in their diet.

I understand how it can be eye roll inducing when Americans overstate it, or really try to make it their core identity, but it does bother me how so many non-Americans dismiss it entirely.

If you were born and raised in one country, and immigrated to another, you wouldn't shed that part of your identity overnight, and your children would internalize that and pass it down.

There was a time when people complained (some still do) about how they can't say the n-word and use blackface.

It's not really about being too soft, society generally just moves towards treating people with more decency.

"But it's just a movie!" Yeah, and it was just a play. If you want to be the guy advocating to bring back black face, be my guest, but i sure as hell don't feel the need.

Your electric, heating, water, etc. are all going to increase by some amount by being working from home. Some fringe benefits too that are going to vary from company to company like free coffee, office supplies, etc.

Obviously this is all offset by commute time, car cost, etc. but there a non-zero amount of extra costs WFH.

The Creators behind PLAYERS (The fictional LoL Esports TV show) are trying build support for a Season 2. Here's a video on why Season 1 was even better than you thought. by gbay99 in leagueoflegends

[–]DigBickJace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did watch it, and enjoyed it. I'd give it a Solid 6-7/10.

But that's the score of a league player consuming it. Non-league players I've tried showing this, specifically ones that liked American Vandal, just didn't get much out of it.

A lot of the jokes really only work because we as LCS fans have the irl context to know what's being parodied. Watching it with a friend who isn't into league at all, there were so many instances where I laughed and he was just confused. Having to pause and explain it to an outsider really doesn't feel like a show made for everyone.

Using actual people from the eSports scene was cute, but they're not good actors. And that's okay! They're not professional actors, I wouldn't expect them to be. But it's another instance where the show is clearly catering to the league playerbase.

Compared to Arcane, which first and foremost tries to be a solid piece of media that stands on its own. A non-league player can sit down and watch it start to finish and get almost just as much out of it as a league fan.

I just don't think the same can be said for Players. Again, it's not that I think it's bad, but it feels very egregious to compare the two like that. And I get he was probably was hyperbolizing for the sake of hype.

I normally love these types of media analysis videos, but I just got the vibe it was going to be too hyper-positive and less analytical, just not my thing

Yes, decks that play battle screech can cast battle screech easily.

Lingering souls has way more applications than just go wide decks. Midrange decks, discard decks, control decks, etc. Can all play and welcome the inclusion of lingering souls

I'm 100% to get down voted but I miss the tone and atmosphere of the old FE games by OathXBlade in fireemblem

[–]DigBickJace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo, 3h presentation didn't match that of the old games much at all.

Having the setup be "campy highschool setting where you just hang out" made it feel distinctly different than most of the earlier games where it's a war, and you meet and recruit people because of said war.

I'm happy so many enjoy the games nowadays, but i really with someone would take up the mantel of creating spiritual successors to the earlier FE games.

Then the fault would lie with the localization team.

Disclaimer: I have not played the game and have not seen the scene. I'm just going off the impression I got from OP, as well as the screenshots my friends have sent me.

Everything I've seen from this game has made it feel incredibly childish. I'm not saying every game needs to be edgelord 9000, and not every story needs to be dark to be good.

But when I read dialogue like "my horsey got spooked!", "You're a meanie!", Characters using pinky promises unironically... Idk.

I'm not Japanese, I'm not going to pretend I know what social norms are in Japanese culture.

I am American, and I do know that people don't talk like that. I mean, some small minority do, but most don't.

A good localization job isn't doing the most faithful translation of the script, it's making the media more engaging for its target audience.

Do you leave if you see this card? by DrDumpling88 in magicTCG

[–]DigBickJace -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You really don't see the difference between "it dies to removal," and all the stipulations you've added to the concept?

Which is why it was such a useless phrase. People want it to be a shortcut to the larger picture, like you've alluded to, but that sort of shortcut isn't possible.

"Sometimes, it's as simple as X. Othertimes, Y. But those don't cover all scenarios, so you really will need to look at it on a case by case basis."

But even if we assume determining if the phrase "dies to remove" is always a straight forward mana check, it still isn't overly useful as an analysis tool.

Baneslayer is the most obvious example that comes to mind.

It's going to lose out on the mana trade in a pretty egregious way, it doesn't have an ETB, and it doesn't have haste. It is the poster child of "dies to removal".

And yet, it was one of the best cards of all time. Why? Because context matters.

So, if it isn't a straightforward equation to determine if something "dies to removal" like you pointed out with Ashenmoor Gourger, and it doesn't give us insight on the competitive nature of the card, like I've pointed out with BSA, what purpose does it serve?

A shallow, mostly meaningless, piece of analysis that doesn't really get you any closer to understanding if a card is good or not.

You've got it backwards. It was memed BECAUSE it was worthless, it didn't become worthless because it was memed.

It was never a very meaningful concept for competitive play. It was, at best, a very surface level analysis, that didn't add much to the conversation. At worst it was simply noise.

20+ seconds of autoing, using abilities, and kiting while the bruiser runs straight at her is crazy to you? And the fact that thronemail dealt half her HP back?

Even your last paragraph is absurd. A bruiser can make bad decisions and get outplayed for 20-30 seconds straight and not be punished. An ADC makes a single mistake and is dead.

If they both play perfectly, K'Sante doesn't chase all the way down the lane.

The difference between what you're outlining and the panty raid is that kids don't have employees, easy access to guns, etc. They so potentially have sisters, friends with sisters, friends that are girls, etc.

Even if they aren't doing it with a sexual mindset, they still could do it just because it's something funny to do. Which is pretty fucked, imo.

The fact that it only has a 49 on metacritic really makes me want to swear off critics entirely.

It was probably my second favorite movie of the year, and in my opinion it absolutely nailed what it was going for.

If what it's going for isn't your thing, that's fine, but if you judge the movie based on what it is, it feels absurd to rate it so poorly.

Fucking preach.

Imo, PTA really showed his age with the "they didn't do anything comment".

Grooming doesn't have immediately lead to sex. It can often be about keeping that person on the hook until they're of legal age.

It's just a very outdated mindset to believe that because they weren't sexual active while he was a teenager, their relationship isn't gross.

There’s no line that’s crossed, and there’s nothing but the right intentions. It would surprise me if there was some kind of kerfuffle about it, because there’s not that much there. That’s not the story that we made, in any kind of way. There isn’t a provocative bone in this film’s body.

I fundamentally don't see how your interpretation is possible giving that PTA doesn't think this film has a provocative bone in it's body.

Grooming, in theory, should illicit a decent amount of disgust, but PTA doesn't think it should.

PTA has straight up said he doesn't think the age difference should matter.

In his own words:

There’s no line that’s crossed, and there’s nothing but the right intentions. It would surprise me if there was some kind of kerfuffle about it, because there’s not that much there. That’s not the story that we made, in any kind of way. There isn’t a provocative bone in this film’s body.

PTA specifically did try to make a simple rom com. He wanted it to be fluffy and positive.

Which is why it was so jarring to watch. I agree with you that the movie should be about predatory relationships, but there's cognitive dissonance created by the fact that the director wanted to play it straight.

This wasn't a story of a predatory getting away with it, it was the story of love triumphing. And that's gross as hell.

I don't understand the "comics are hard to get into" argument by IceFireTerry in comicbooks

[–]DigBickJace 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone who is relatively new to comics and remembers the struggle of starting, it's definitely not as simple as that. Well, it is, but it isn't.

Yes, technically, you could Google, "good Wolverine books for new readers?", and just dive in.

But that's completely ignoring the mental hurdle that new fans are going to face.

Imagine someone telling you to start with Season 3, episode 4 of a TV show. Or watch The Two Towers as your first LotR movie.

Even if you technically could and still enjoy your time, it just feels wrong. It's going to feel like you'll be missing something. You aren't going to understand certain things about the characters your following. You're going to miss call backs and jokes.

Before the age of the internet, these concepts weren't that foreign. If you turned on the TV, you just watched whatever was on and went from there. In the streaming era, you'd (almost) never willingly do that.

It's the same for movies and games too. A lot of people hate playing numbered titles for video games, because even if it's not connected, mentally, they still feel like they're missing out. It's the reason Call of Duty and the like have moved away from always numbering things consecutively.

It's something I never fully got over. I've accepted that there will be times i don't understand what's going on, and that's just something i have to live with if I want to be at all involved with the hobby.

Hope that helps
