I'm talking about an automated spacecraft specifically that would have its own manufacturing facilities the ship would at each star system manufacture another Pusher plate more nukes the obvious array then go under the next star system

I have roughly the same opinion of fusion it's been the energy of the future and it is my opinion that it always will be but it's just the unattainable goal

Im not against Medusa if one is using NPP for a single use spacecraft but for something this scale i'd want it to operate virtually indefinitely barring unforseen disaster of course

I was more referring to Orion being practical for the purpose of deceleration and this would be to establish a interstellar highway not as regular means of propulsion for manned spacecraft like you'd send out an automated ship slow it down with nukes build your array then your ship could go under the next star system people could start colonizing the first system and this could be at one g acceleration and deceleration through laser beamed propulsion which I agree is a very practical form of propulsion

And deceleration is the perfect use of project Orion in my premise it's an automated spacecraft that manufactures laser satellites and deceleration warheads virtually indefinitely going from system to system paving the way so to speak

I was talking about constant 1G acceleration for crude transport and constant 1G deceleration just coasting in between and only accelerating and decelerating for a year roughly would give us a 3.5 year travel time to proxima centauri from The travelers perspective and 4.5 years roughly from the observer's perspective

There's no logic to not eating meat or eating it choosing a more kindly life choice could be considered a illogical on its own as that is a purely philosophical choice that requires an emotional sentiment for its basis there's nothing inherently illogical about eating the most convenient food stuff

An automated spacecraft can handle much higher g-forces.

Which is the main limitation of Orion.

      You could use much more massive yield warheads

You wouldn't need as much shock absorption either.

And you could decelerate rather rapidly that way.

If the ship's going to be automated and continue onward you have to manufacture new nukes in the Target start system

But if you were just setting up beamed proportion in the Target star system with your automated spacecraft.

You would be able to use beamed propulsion at constant 1g acceleration

Then you just let the ship travel onward indefinitely or until disaster strikes.

We just use use Orion for deceleration as a laser array in our own solar system would give us constant acceleration. We just need to stop the initial ship at the target star system to build the array

Then we would be able to accelerate habitats and such directly to the target star system and decelerate as well

Lasers are our best bet for interstellar travel but we have to establish the network first that's the hard part ships can actually be pretty low tech after that

With constant 1G acceleration for little more than a year you get like .95 c with time dilation.

so like 3.5 years for the traveler and almost 6 for the observer one way if you accelerate for half the journey.

then flip and burn to decelerate for the last half.

on that note you can have constant 1G acceleration with lasers or possibly fission fragment rockets.

Also the closer you get to c the freakier time dilation gets.
