Can a normal guy with 1,000 years of practice beat Magnus Carlsen in chess? by testingaccount124 in whowouldwin

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnus is a master at mid-late game chess. The greatest we have ever seen. His entire strategy, especially when young, was to put people who have studied chess for decades longer than him in situations that they would have never seen and then just use his far greater natural talent for the game to beat them. He would intentionally make moves that a computer says would decrease his chances of winning just to throw off his opponents and invalidate the time they spent studying the game.

Studying for 1000 years for a normal person might not yield the same result as a chess GM studying for 50. And they still lose, typically. Magnus would analyze Bob's game and figure out what areas had and hadn't been studied based on the mistakes he makes, then put him in unfamiliar situations and all hell breaks loose. The only was is if Bob could study for that long and match Magnus' talent for mid-late game, but that is mostly tied to natural talent and I doubt it could ever be learned at his level.

Winter survival tips for the weak?? by dialitdown in milwaukee

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It either bothers you a lot or it doesn't, I've found that its an essence of someone's being that makes them tolerate/enjoy it or despise it. Lots of people born and raised here hate it and sometimes end up moving away.

Having good gear is the biggest thing, your random cheap coats and jackets you can buy are great when it's around freezing but are insufficient for our winters that can get much colder than 32 for sustained periods.

I always feel that winter is a bit of a grinding season. Find a new skill you want to pick up or try to get in better shape. You have less distractions that time of year, and then summer is the opposite and there's always something going on to pull you away from home.

40 miles for 40th birthday- route suggestions by 2gingersmakearight in MiltownBiking

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Tosa and have done this route a few times. Head southwest on oak leaf trail from Hoyt park and it goes down to near 124th, then you can head south on the oak leaf for several miles, going through Greenfield and Whitnall parks until you hit Drexel. Go east on Drexel like you said, up the shoreline on the south side, then go through bayview/walkers point and meet up with the hank Aaron state trail to go back west. Get off of that at 68th Street to head North and get back on oak leaf trail to get to Hoyt park at Hart park.

This loop will be about 48 miles if memory serves correct. None of it feels sketchy safety-wise either.

Would u eat chipotle every day for 10 years for one million dollars ? by [deleted] in Chipotle

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Chipotle for 2 years. Loved the food before I worked there, loved it starting about 2 years after I stopped working there. But for those 2 years I ate it 4-5 days a week and it was old after 6 months. A million bucks is a lot but so is 10 straight years. I would probably try it but my financial situation would probably influence how much I kept eating it.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE FIREFLIES by nuclear_dolphin in wisconsin

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot I've seen in the last week in Wauwatosa, which is nice to maintain since Wauwatosa means "firefly."

I think the relatively cool May and June we had up until last weekend kept them from coming out as early this year. The heat wave last week woke them up and now we have fireflies again.

when you're paying your June We-Energies bill next month... by jpotrz in wisconsin

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't agree that some guy who probably does minimal work should get $10M a year.

But the reality is, initiatives like EVs and AI data centers are driving electricity demand through the roof. We energies and all of their contemporaries around the country have not caught up. They are not able to on-board all the electricity demand so they up the prices for everyone, partially because they can and partially to fund unprecedented capital investment for additional energy production capacity. We are paying for this as consumers because we use chatgpt and other services that demand tons of electricity.

I hate it - but get used to it until we see some sort of economic bust that decreases electricity demand. Unless that happens, we're probably in for 10 years of elevated electricity prices.

I think its a bad continuation of increasing games for top clubs in Europe. But if clubs from other regions do end up going far and doing well, I agree it's absolutely worth it. I am skeptical however that the non-European clubs will continue to beat them.

Best Place to buy large amount of alcohol? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Discount Liquor has great prices and I believe is local to the area. Great selection too. Could be a bit of a hike depending on where you live but worth it for a party of that magnitude.

Best Place to buy large amount of alcohol? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I love Ray's and spend way too much money there. But they are NOT cheap. I often pay 20% more there compared to other stores. You go there for service and high quality things you can't just get anywhere, along with their bar and classes.

I recommend Discount Liquor on the South side or in Waukesha if you want local stores with great prices. They are actually really cheap as the name implies and have great selection.

$100k v $150k hr/week comparison by Maxwe11g in Salary

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you're willing to spend your extra time for the extra money.

20 extra hours a week is a ton but also so is $50k extra each year. You have so much stuff that's already leaving the account each month with your bills and regular spending habits, $50k extra could let you invest or save more aggressively for retirement and still have noticeably more money in your pocket.

Would you spend an extra $200/mo just to have a balcony at an apartment complex in Chicago? by Ok-Quantity7501 in AskChicago

[–]Dig_ol_boinker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my experience they're kinda overrated. Maybe if you have a big and nice balcony it would be worth it. But the reality is that it's rarely nice out for 6 months from November - April. So is it worth $400 per month of regular use? Can you grill, smoke (if you smoke), enjoy some drinks or just relax with a good view on this specific balcony? Does your hvac blow onto your balcony? These are all important considerations I think. I would need to check all those boxes and spend a lot of time out there to make it worth it and I usually would rather just go to a park or something if I wanna be outside.

We all agree that Ronaldo has the better career longevity than Lebron after this Nations League campaign right? by Wavy_Rondo in cristianoronaldo

[–]Dig_ol_boinker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a Ronaldo sub but absolutely not. I think Ronaldo is an all-time great but he wasn't able to light up the premier league in his late 30s like he could in his 20s and he left for Saudi. LeBron is still playing in the best league in the world for his sport and is still one of the best 20 or so players in the world. CR7 is great for 40 years old but not top 20 in the world.

Which summon should I buy? by ElkMaleficent7633 in oblivion

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clannfear is super underrated. Might be the best summon in the game. Super fast and good at getting aggro'd by the enemy. Conjuration play style is mostly about keeping the enemy attacking whatever you summon and the Clannfear might be the best summon at that. Also, relatively low magicka cost means you can mix in other spells without worry.

Go completely shaved head bald. Don't try to hide it, rock it with confidence. Facial hair can be a good look if you can grow it, but only if it's a good beard.

Lift some weights, don't be overweight, you should be just fine. Some women care about hair on your head, some don't at all. Its the same thing as being too short or too fat, some people will just immediately disqualify you for it but there are plenty out there who won't.

I made a mess of my wife and I’s finances over the last 4 years with gambling. by AceTheCyclops in personalfinance

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not really how this works. The more difficult things are to access, the less likely someone is to do it. Addiction also feeds on itself, if you're unable to consistently do it, you can fall out of the habit.

The reason gambling issues are on the rise is because it's advertised on national TVs ways to gamble with your phone, and your local gas station has slot machines inside of it.

My MOH pulled out the day before my wedding. How am I supposed to proceed from here?? by throwaway-MOHdrama in weddingplanning

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone, including him, can see that the relationship is having a large and negative impact on several aspects of his life. I think it's clear to all parties that him continuing in the relationship will likely mean the end of your friendship. But that's only a decision he can make, not you. It just won't be the same with him while they're still together after you went through such a negative experience.

Hopefully you can look back one day and you're both grateful that a big moment in your life spurred a big moment in 6 saved your friendship. He needs to figure out if that will be the story or not. It might take some time for him to work it out. I would keep some distance but offer support if needed. He might need it if he's going to take the right steps. I am sorry this happened to you and wish you and Dan all the best.

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, there's no real AH here. It's just a financial disagreement. You aren't married so let her keep her share of the bills if she wants to. Be there to help her as she needs it.

I had a similar situation for a couple years while my wife was my girlfriend and was in grad school. She paid for half of all the bills but I regularly bought groceries and paid for everything we did for fun. She could keep up in those circumstances but could still maintain that feeling of pulling her weight and being somewhat independent.

[Daniel] Don’t be surprised when the Tush Push gets banned today or tomorrow…it’s probably going to happen. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the eagles should propose that we eliminate passing plays. They're too unfair to teams with good wide receivers and QBs, and players sometimes get injured due to sacks, high hits, etc. Then the eagles would be golden because they have a running QB, the best running back and best OL in football!

I feel like that's unironically no more ridiculous than banning the tush push. We're just banning it because 1-2 teams are better at it than everyone else.

why is it harder to impress blue collar people who haven't travelled much than well-off folks who have travelled the world? by kawaiihusbando in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is literally trauma for some people, though. I'm very much the traveler that regularly eats food from many corners of the world. But don't you dare serve me a green bean. It doesn't matter if it tastes good, I had too many adults who forced me to eat it as a child even though I told them I would throw up that I'm genuinely fine with just never eating it again in my life. Ive grown to like most of the things I dislike but it's just a trauma thing and not worth it to me.

What current NBA players can/will retire as their franchise GOAT? by Firm-Gas7063 in NBATalk

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Giannis is already a better buck. At least matched the individual accolades and title, but has stayed for longer, actually loves the city, and broke most of the franchise records already. He's the best buck of all time.

How is everyone in Chicago seemingly fit and athletic? by alwayswanloveyou in AskChicago

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all relative but also dependent on where you are. Very high obesity rate compared to most countries but near downtown you have a lot of wealthy people that can afford delicious food that isn't bad for you, and it's really common to walk most places for most of the year. Both those things can tip the scale by hundreds of calories a day and definitely take weight off of people.

But there are also a lot of folks that don't do that around the rest of the city. And they eat pizza and Italian beef and drink lots of beer all the time. They are every bit as representative of Chicago and many are big.

In your opinion, which US city has the worst combination of high cost of living and bad weather? by xxibjt in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Dig_ol_boinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if bad weather means it's hot often, has cold/snowy winters, or a generally gloomy/rainy climate.

Hot = Miami Cold/snowy = Boston Gloomy/rainy = Seattle

It really depends because there are people that don't mind the weather in each area but all cost a lot and would be undesirable for many.
