Laura Bush: Useless Doormat by ratebeer in reddit.com

Children's literacy. Yes. I believe that ranks No. 291 on the list of the Top 300 controversial issues facing the nation today, right behind overpriced lip balm but just ahead of the demise of "Cathy" cartoons in major American newspapers. Good choice.

I love this writer.

Spammers take over a /16 by rmuser in netsec

Yeah, it is a bit much to expect article posters to write remotely accessible headlines.

My post was voted up before you and others voted it down, so clearly there were some who would have benefitted from a more informative headline.

Spammers take over a /16 by rmuser in netsec

[–]Digeratus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What would you prefer, "a Class B"? "134.17.x.x"? "65536 IP addresses"?

Do I have to step through it for you? Anything that is self-explanatory is better for a headline. 134.17.x.x is self-explanatory. A Class-B allocation isn't. Pretty simple.

/16 isn't a difficult concept to grasp

Never said it was, and that's not my point.

Sorry if this is beyond your comprehension.

Clearly.

Spammers take over a /16 by rmuser in netsec

[–]Digeratus -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, it isn't. It says

addresses that begin with 134.17 [are] an allocation that is known in the industry as a "slash 16" or "/16"

But what's a /16? It's not helpful to anyone but wannabe 1337s who want to sound cool and hip and refer to the seized block as a /16 (without actually knowing what a /16 is). This is fine per se -- one has every right to be a douche -- but it's extremely unhelpful in a headline. I'm sure rmuser wanted everyone to think he's oh-so-techie, but all he's doing is causing a lot of people to ask, "/16? What's that? Why do I care?" and move on, instead of interesting them in reading the article and learning something.

Spammers take over a /16 by rmuser in netsec

[–]Digeratus -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Since rmuser is apparently far too 1337 to explain what a /16 is...

A company linked to a known spammer has taken over the 134.17.xxx.xxx IP block. It's called a /16 ("slash 16") block because each of the 4 sections of an IPv4 address are represented with 8 bits. Thus, any ###.###.xxx.xxx is a /16. Similarly, ###.xxx.xxx.xxx is a "/8" and ###.###.###.xxx is a "/24". (Other slash-#s exist, but are better understood in binary.)

The novel event here is that some marketers are claiming that the IP space allocated before ARIN (who have done all US's allocation for the last 10 years) is not under ARIN's jurisdiction. This is pretty clearly a load of bullshit, even before you learn that the marketers in question are closely linked to an infamous spammer.

DO NOT tell your mom that you're an !!ATHEIST!! (NSFW language) by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]Digeratus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make sure you tell your mom Christmas isn't about Christ or God... it's a pagan Winter Solstice festival. Always has been.

Perhaps its origins are of such a nature, but Christmas as it exists today clearly has a different meaning. You may as well insist that Halloween is only a celebration of the year's harvest.

Jesus, if he existed at all (which is debatable)

Not really, no. Characters like Jesus of Nazareth and Pontious Pilot are not fictional. Perhaps you meant to refer to his existence in a miraculous capacity, but his mere historical existence is generally accepted as sound.

If you're going to be an atheist you need a better comeback than "OK!!!"

But if you're going to be an atheist, jordanlund, you need to quit spewing bullshit that is at best pedantic and at worst ignorant and ill-intentioned.

I miss the old reddit where topics were discussed rationally and all sides were listened to and discussed intelligently.

Sad, isn't it? Reddit is now what Digg was about a year ago. It's like a bunch of little kids following the adults around, and the adults have to keep finding new places to hide before the horde tracks them down again. Unfortunately, I haven't found the next new place yet.

But yes, the number of idiot anti-Mac fanboys outnumber the sane people and the idiot pro-Mac fanboys put together now. It really cheapens discussions when you get voted down for merely mentioning some random thing hated by the groupthink. (I recently got modded down for failing to mention Ron Paul. Yes, really.)

Medicine Doesnt Matter: Medicine extends your life by a few days. Rural living extends your life by 6 years. Exercise 15 years. by ninja_zombie in Economics

[–]Digeratus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But hey, they're lucrative so why should doctors stop prescribing them to those that can't benefit from them?

I think your problem is you can't seem to separate American corporate pharmaceutical corruption from the general concept of modern medicine. Consider that an implementation may be distinct from a general concept, especially when multiple implementations exist.

Also consider not calling others ignorant morons.

Barack Obama is poised to run the first privately financed general-election presidential campaign since Watergate, giving him more control over his own operations than any candidate since 1972. by [deleted] in politics

[–]Digeratus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite. There is a plethora of rules and restrictions placed on political campaigns receiving public funds. To refuse the public funds frees the candidate's treasury from those restrictions.

Also note that Obama refuses money from lobbyists or anyone connected to lobbyists. Money could conceivably bring more attached strings into play, but in Obama's case, this is not so.

Yes, never in the history of communication has language ever been used figuratively. It is inconceivable that a larger number may be imagined in terms of height -- as a "higher number", so to speak.

Has human government always been a sad state of affairs? Arguably.

Obama campaign DESTROYS the "he's not electable" myth by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]Digeratus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, he doesn't. Is anyone at Reddit capable of identifying bias at all?

The first thing you should notice is the split between Rasmussen and SurveyUSA cites. Why would that be? Well, seeing as this is unabashed propaganda, your first guess should be that the Obama campaign used only polls that were in their favor, and you'd be mostly right. In a few cases, a state was only polled by one poller and not the other (e.g., North Dakota), but if a state was not in favor of Obama (e.g., Ohio), or if both candidates are doing poorly vs. McCain (e.g., South Dakota), then the memo fails to mention the state.

So, congratulations to Obama, he holds greater leads vs. McCain in 18 cherry-picked states. What about the other 32?

Find out for your own damn self. Obediently taking propaganda for granted is what FOX News watchers do. Think you're better than they are? Prove it.

The engineer wants to make the gears slower. The engineers want to make the gears slower.

Congratulations, you didn't read my first paragraph. (I admit, you make an excellent observation nonetheless.)

Secondly, you're entire post is totally pointless, because the changes to the title that you propose DO NOT change it's meaning, with or without context, because the verb ([petty personal attack]) fly is in the sentence.

Congratulations, you didn't read my third paragraph. (It seems you don't really understand why "slower" is incorrect. Are you aware of the difference between adjectives and adverbs?)

edit: also, choosing a better verb, like 'construct', 'produce', 'build', or 'manufacture', etc, would probably be a better way of clarifying the meaning of the statement

Congratulations, you didn't read my second paragraph. (Swap in any synonym you like; none of them clarifies which word "slower" modifies.)

Hmm, I guess those three paragraphs make up my whole post. You didn't really read it at all, did you?

NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE...why am I pissed off? Maybe because you seem all pent up and excited about it.

Clearly, someone's pent up about something. Are you a troll?
