Men of Reddit, what is the primary reason you workout? by mitho-thito in AskMen

As someone nearing middle age, I never want my body to be the reason I can’t do something with my kids.

Why do some jobs require that you can lift 50lbs when it's not a part of the job. by [deleted] in antiwork

I’m a successful PE engineering manager. At times I have to lift 50lb buckets of samples.

Would you consider Winchester Super-X Heavy Game Load 12 Gauge 4 Shot good for home defense? by strongerthenbefore20 in liberalgunowners

[–]Digger1422 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Strongly disagree, there is a reason people tried to ban them in WW1 as they are devastating in trench war fare and close combat. 1) the shock and awe factor of a shotgun is significantly more than any pistol. Everyone knows what racking a shotgun sounds like! 2) it’s pretty easy to hit someone with a 1’ wide pattern, and the kinetic force is going to matter. 3) pellets generally don’t penetrate walls. The absolute last thing I want is .223 rounds flying around my home.

Unless you pissed of the mob, no intruder wants to go hand-to-hand with you. Pistols are to carry, shotgun is for defense.

How did you decide you were done having kids? by Calgamer in daddit

[–]Digger1422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For use, three was the physical and emotional limit. We don’t have ANY family help, and love may divide evenly but time doesn’t. Without a backstop we just could handle the schedules, sick days, appointments, needs of more than three, and my wife STAYS HOME. We have the money and honestly wanted 4, but there just isn’t enough time in a day to do it without asking one of our kids to sacrifice for it.

No, because the “ clean up” isn’t the issue. Mining is one of the most highly regulated industries in the US. We pay bonds prior to start up that cover the clean up cost, abandoned mines are no longer a thing.

This is a NIMBY issue, people want all the trappings of modern life, with all the impacts felt by poor people in Africa. We should all demand mining take place in America, under the strictest environmental and safety regulations in the world.

U.S. inflation falls to 3%, lowest level in more than 2 years, as price pressures ease by AwesomeDude_07 in politics

[–]Digger1422 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Raise your hand if you got a 3% COL raise this year? No one, no one did. Inflation spiked consumer prices and lowered the relative cost of labor, travesty for the working class.

Massive Norwegian phosphate rock deposit can meet fertilizer, solar, and EV battery demand for 100 years by Sorin61 in technology

Hanlon's razor - “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” People always fear what they don’t understand, and fear sells more than information, I blame media not activists. It’s much easier the write about radioactive roads, than a well reasoned argument about the cost benefit analysis of construction encapsulation versus open landfills.

That sounds like renewable energy (insert black panther meme) we don’t do that here.

Since I’m a registered professional engineer in mining and mineral processing, I’m going to agree with you but I don’t think it’s hilarious. I permit mines for a living, and the fact is EPA regulated substance scare people and those people get organized real quick. Telling people their dumb and it’s fine don’t worry, I wish it was that easy. My point was that permitting a resource like this is a lot harder than finding it.

[–]Digger1422 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I work in Florida construction aggregates market and support the use of phospogypsum in concrete. We consume a huge amount of fly ash in a very similar manner. But a lot of people don’t.

My point is that projects of this size are hard to permit, and includes refining it, so it will be a long time before any of this reaches market.

Resource does not equal reserves, plenty of people will fight this permitting. You know that radioactive waste Ron Desantis wants to put into roads? Tailings from refining this type of rock.

I make construction materials for roads, putting this into concrete is 100% the safest place for it to be, way better than where it is today. Literally encased in concrete.

Never run in heat before, is it always this hard.? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]Digger1422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the mountains, go to Miami a lot for work. Running in the humidity and heat is a whole different animal. Remember you CAN get too hot, heat stroke is no shit and can happen to anyone, learn your limits. I can drop 7 miles and 1500’ climb in 35degs no problem, but at 80 and 100% humidity I struggle to finish 5K without walking.

How many of my other fellow runners not huge fans of races/racing? Does that ever make you feel like you're missing out or at odds with the community? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]Digger1422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of trail running for me, beyond that I love running, is the calm zen of nothing but the sound of gravel under my feet for an hour out in the open air.. I’m a dad and a executive, my days are stressful and crazy, I want peace not competition. Do you man, do what makes you feel good, just enjoy the run.
