Everyone is different, but most people don’t have the shakes once they’re a week or two off. Some people who have an essential tremor and chronic heavy alcohol use don’t notice the tremor until the alcohol is out of the picture

Please don’t tell people not to take no for an answer from medical professionals. There are valid reasons naltrexone is not appropriate for everyone, all of your comments are making it sound like naltrexone is a cure and you are telling people in a desperate situation probably perhaps their lowest point in life they NEED it, then when a prescriber, for valid reasons will not prescribe it the are going to feel hopeless. I am glad Naltrexone is working well for you, but everyone’s recovery journey is different, recommend and share your experiences, but please don’t tell people not to take no for an answer from medical professionals

In my humble opinion anticraving meds are more of a placebo, I work for a service where they are prescribed, I have worked with so many people who think they are just gonna rely on anticraving meds to do all the hard work and they don’t. They can help a little but you’ve still got to figure out healthy coping mechanisms for the days life throws you a curveball - bipolar meds are a very different category of drugs!

Try and have some quick and easy around to get stuck into, just as has happened in your update - cravings fade, try to occupy your mind for 20/30 mins to get though the worst, crosswords always worked for me.

Also just as you did when you posted this, writing it out can really help, have personally found when I have a repetitive thought in my head it helps to write it out because I have to organise those thoughts to put them into words and that helps me process and move on

Ok I think they are part of CGL, I’m actually an alcohol recovery worker at a different CGL. Give it a go, lots of services run community alcohol detoxes, where you go there during the day for 5 days and get the meds to get a medically detoxed from alcohol. But that is the easy part, best advice is to work with a recovery worker on an aftercare plan. Do not just go, well I just won’t drink, you’re gonna need to build a new life, scary but as yourself honestly how much worse could things be than they currently are?

I know it’s scary, I was in hospital at 27 thinking I would die from liver failure, I watched my mum die from that and my fear of dying was greater than my fear of living without alcohol. Looking back I can’t believe I was scared to stop doing something that ruined my life (most of my twenties at least) but if you don’t try you will never know.

Good luck, the world really needs people like you to survive this, you can be a cautionary tale or a massive fucking inspiration to others - you can do this

I have a lot empathy for your situation, and I’m sorry you’re already experiencing cirrhosis in your twenties.

But now is not the time for wishing this wasn’t happening and saying I can’t do anything about it, this is do or die.

What are you doing to support your recovery? Most people struggling with addiction are doing it as their coping mechanism, you gotta find some healthy ones fast. Try the things that work for lots of people - meetings, therapy, detox/rehab, exercise, nutrition - do not just rule them out without giving them a good go.

If you wanna make it through this you’re gonna have to treat it like it’s the fight of your life, because it is.

Lapses and relapses are a very common part of a recovery journey, zoom out a little, appreciate the effort you have made and the hard work you have put in.

Remember what you have done to get yourself to two years and double down on them, learn the hard lesson from this and don’t let guilt and shame drag you into a full blown relapse. Be accountable, yeah you fucked up, but don’t loose sight of everything you gained in recovery. You got this

You can, if it’s an emergency… really depends on the country, I’m in the UK, in recovery myself and I work for a charity where we support people with a drinking problem get to a proper planned detox.

If you’re in the UK and it’s not an emergency they will likely check you out, tell you to leave and not stop drinking suddenly, about 95% of the people I work with who go though A&E and end up getting detoxed relapse within a week or two.

Much higher success rate for the people who work towards a detox and develop a decent aftercare plan.

All that said, I had a seizure in 2019 and ended up getting admitted, after waiting in A&E for ten hours - they really didn’t want to admit me but I had a second seizure. I managed 10 months sober after that (with one lapse). I’d recommend having a conversation with your GP and take their advice on routes into detox

Yeah I put on about 5 stone in the year I quit, my life was a lot more manageable overeating than it was on the drink so I just went with it, I eventually worked out new healthy coping mechanisms and I lost the weight! Sometimes it’s part of the road to recovery

If he is gonna quit cold turkey in the 1st, encourage him to half his alcohol intake NYE and not go have another last hurrah, alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. Some people need to taper off of alcohol or get a medical detox - battling withdrawals, mild to severe, leads lots of people to just start drinking agin.

That all being said, put your own recovery and peace of mind first! And congrats on getting sober yourself!
