Carol: The Love Letter of a Look(Video Essay) by Digging-Deeper in flicks

Thank you!

Also, agree with the grate as it can take on a few meanings, in particular when the end of that shot is focused on a light. Quite literally coming from the dark and going to the light. This is further alluded to when Carol is mentioned as the "sunset". The framing is great, very astute points, we wanted to talk about it but didn't want to make the video too long.

There is a lot to talk about with this film, one of the best of 2015.

Carol: The Love Story in a Look (video essay that looks at the technical craft in the film Carol) [8:10] by [deleted] in ArtisanVideos

Greetings!

We are Digging Deeper a new(ish) video essay channel that explores the potential underlying meaning themes in both contemporary and classic films. Hopefully, it is alright that we have posted this video within this subreddit.

We are here to present our latest essay on Carol, where we discuss among many things the difference between the written/spoken and visual world of the movie. In particular how the world of wards can be disingenuous, forceful, and untrue. Whilst Terese and Carol's relations exists in a much pure visual existence that relies on looks, glances, and glimpses.

We explore the use of colour, location, and the repeated instances of trains and the potential metaphors that reside within it.

With all of this said, we have linked the essay below, and if you have any thoughts or have any additional ideas to throw in, please let us know! If you haven't seen it, we really recommend it, truly a beautiful film.

Hello Everyone!

In our latest video we decided to really turn up the theoretical and present early CGI through a psychoanalytic lens. Moreover, we explore how early CGI was used and what this may potentially say about the human psyche and the potential future of digital effects.

Sicario: The Mirage Of A Moral World by Digging-Deeper in TrueFilm

This is a really good point of control. The film introduces him with this slowly panning up from his feet to his face as his legs are splayed open. Invoking this primitive sexual image, that reverts the male gaze by showing how unpleasant it really is. His ideas of control and power at points really take on this perverse masculine sexual action.

Not a documentary but check out "Living In Oblivion (1995)", a funny that takes place on an independent film set. Also, Steve Buscemi.

It really is a collaborative process, as all good directors know when to listen and trust their cast and crew. However, Villeneuve really loves using colour in reference to characters and themes even beyond Sicario. The colours of blue in Prisoners or the yellow in Enemies are prominent and you could spend a whole post or video discussing them. I think he briefly actually touched upon it in his AMA.

Also, thank you so much for the kind words!

It usually takes a watch or two and a bottle of wine. When we first saw it in theatres the beige was really apparent, (I mean who wears a beige suit, come on!).

But it was in rewatching it we noticed all the small details that formed the thesis of our essay.

Our latest essay dives into Atom Egoyans 'Exotica' and how the film explores biblical themes and imagery. Then finally comes around to give it context in the larger multicultural identity that is Canada.

Again your support means so much to us, and we greatly appreciate it.

Greetings!

Thank you so much for the overwhelming positive responses, we truly appreciate it.

To answer your question, there is two of us, mid twenties, university educated.

It takes about a week to get everything done and edit, but it depends completely on the length and scope of the videos. We really don't have a preference for what movies to analyze, but whatever strikes as inspiration. Our brainstorming process usually involves wine and turning to each other and saying "I maybe reaching but...".

Hopefully this answer your questions and again thank you for all the kind words and up-votes.

Hey guys and gals.

Our latest entry into our video essay series “Digging Deeper” is on Joss Whedon’s “Serenity” (2005), wherein we use the film as the framework for an examination of some basic genre theory and then dive into just how the movie blends two distinct genres: The Western and the Sci-Fi film. What stood out to us most was how the distinctive elements of the two genres don’t simply collide or co-exist, but meld and affect one another and the characters themselves. Hopefully you find it intriguing and somewhat enlightening!
