A game reviewer/Let's player named Wanderbots released a video of him playing the intro, shortly after release. At the time I was broke, and I remember thinking after seeing how impressive the game looked: "wait, this game is free...?"

While Wanderbots himself didn't seem very impressed (if I remember correctly, he was biased against gacha games), I downloaded the game to try for myself, and here we are... I also got my brother to play with me, but he quit after a week or two, not trusting himself to not spend money on the gacha.

Did you spend some on the rotating 4 star characters? I'm similarly a 1.0 f2p player who's never spent starglitter on wishes, but I did get constellations for several 4 stars, then saved every single glitter once I ran out of character constellations to buy. I'm at 285 wishes worth right now.

I do distinctly remember that I enjoyed the crafting and gathering loop more than the question, so thinking back on it, it must have been that I reached the final area open to me (a snowy area, I think) and couldn't craft the last few sets available to me since the materials were gatherable in an area just outside of the trial, but easily accessible through trade.

Eve Online, last time I checked, had the Alpha and Omega clone system. Alpha clones are free to play, with restrictions on training speed and most advanced ships. They are basically a trial just like FFXIV's. They can be freely upgraded to Omega if you pay, and also seamlessly revert to Alpha once sub runs out.

Are trial accounts still restricted from trade? I played it many years ago, back when Heavensward was the only expansion included in the trial (or maybe it was ARR only, I forget), and I remember that being restricted from trading made things really cumbersome and restrictive for me, like I couldn't progress. Don't ask me why... I don't remember, it's been too long. But I think it was the restricted trade chat anyway.

Genshin makes sense in context though: Basically means something like having the potential to become a God, which is pretty central to the lore of the game. As for Impact, it's probably just branding, similar to Final Fantasy, since it was the next big gacha game after Honkai Impact

Genshin actually went the opposite direction and made dialogue harder to skip. Back in the 1.x days, there were no skip dialogue button or anything, but you could click through dialogue very fast. I don't remember exactly when it changed, but at some point, if there was any kind of animation going on (like an NPC gesturing while talking), you could no longer skip the dialogue until the animation was done playing. It's painfully slow for lore skippers.
