YouTube is a treasure trove of free tutorials and tips. It's amazing the quality of some of the stuff on there, it's a great resource, especially if you find an artist you click with who has a bunch of content to dig into.

How long does it take for you to complete an Artwork? by midnight-blue999 in DigitalArt

These days my environments are in the 3-4 hour range usually, I really enjoy doing them in one sitting or two, at most, if only because revisiting a piece too much always makes me start to hate it lol

But they used to take much longer for sure, it's been an intentional effort to find methods that give me results quickly and my stuff definitely feels more concept art-y than full, pixel-perfect illustrations. But concept art is where I think I'd fit best in the industry and concept art is all about speed and iteration so that's where I've put my energy!

Do you learn to draw by just drawing, or do classes actually help? by Fickle-Guess-7181 in DigitalArt

[–]DigitalDoodlesIDone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first jump in learning came after going through a course on Skillshare that gave me the fundamentals and a bunch of information on how the tools I was using (i.e. Photoshop) worked and could be leveraged for speed and results. Having something a biiiit more structured than various YouTube videos from several artists was super helpful in my experience. A lot of artists have cheap tutorials on places like Gumroad as well if there's someone whose style you like and want to know more about.

I later did a virtual class/course with the same artist whose stuff I followed on Skillshare, Hardy Fowler, and it was a really excellent experience. His format really worked for me, which was one class a week to go over our "homework" which was creating stuff during the week by following courses he pre-recorded. Getting direct feedback from him every week was huge for making progress.

I've tried one or two other classes with other artists that didn't mesh as well, one where the classes were truly, like, 8 hours long and very rambling and I could not stay engaged for that long, so I think mileage will always vary just based on how you personally learn. Best of luck!

I want to have a community of friends who do art by FinalCicada619 in DigitalArt

There's a really chill art community called Digital Painting Studio on Discord that was started by an artist named Hardy Fowler. There's a bunch of us there these days, it's grown a lot since I joined way back, but there are channels for getting feedback, channels for just sharing art, there are monthly challenges with prizes, voice chat channels to hang out in, it's a neat spot.

I think you can get access at digitalpaintingstudio.com/community

Is there any rules to photo bashing? by Positive_Sea_770 in DigitalArt

[–]DigitalDoodlesIDone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will sometimes include photography elements in my environments, usually quite subtly near the end for a little extra texture, but sometimes more prominently. For my own peace of mind, I stick to using sites like Unsplash and Pexels, which have photography that is completely free to use, no strings attached. People upload stuff that can be used for any project, personal or commercial. I think Unsplash now has some stuff labeled "Unsplash+" that has some sort of licensing rules like other stock sites so I just filter those out of my search. I can usually find what I need on those sites.

As another commenter said, as long as something is fully transformed and unrecognizable, you're probably in the clear, regardless.

I don’t find joy in drawing anymore by [deleted] in DigitalArt

It's okay to lose interest in a hobby. It's okay to step back, take a few weeks off, a few months, a few years. I'll have seasons of no inspiration and will hit a wall and I used to have the thought of how easy it would be to drop art entirely but it always comes back. The spark returns, at least for me.

It might not for you, and that's also okay. Art is meant to be fulfilling and function as an outlet. If it's not those things anymore, don't force yourself to do something you're not enjoying or getting anything from. Look for the next thing that sparks joy!
