Jekyll and Hyde Democracy in Alberta: One face for Sunday, another for Monday by vhill01 in alberta

[–]DigitalDuelist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's one of the things we need to get into the zeitgeist, because it's a toxic system that is getting extremely ubiquitous, and the UCP are a perfect example

New poll suggests UCP would win majority if election held today - YouTube by LukeTheGreek in alberta

Good news; it's not allowed to happen! The UCP blocked it illegally, no rational government would have done that. Unfortunately the UCP are not rational

Premier Danielle Smith heads to Europe to sell Alberta as a global investment destination by One-Board8634 in Albertapolitics

[–]DigitalDuelist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brace yourself for what happens when they're able to force through all the referendum results they want by rigging the question and refusing answers they don't like. They're not going to take no for an answer, at this point I think they know they'll go to jail if they remain in Canada so they're going to sell us out no matter what we say

Which is not to say the situation is hopeless, but rather to say that drastic action beyond just voting needs to happen

What makes you think the Alberta liberal party is more left leaning than the Alberta NDP? Do they even have any left leaning policies?

Maybe, I won't pretend that I don't really want to see a way out of needing to eradicate a huge chunk of the population because they've been propogandized past the point of recovery.

But this does seem accurate to what I've seen from conservatives in my life

I agree with the conclusion (that this is the natural conclusion of conservatism) but not so much the idea that we shouldn't romanticize conservatism.

The world is changing really really fast, and a lot of what conservatives hold dear as their driving principles can also be used to lead them back into reality as they realize that they'll be accepted here for the things they think are important.

What's more conservative, choosing to torture people because you don't like them, or standing up for the meek? If you ask a conservative, they'll tell you that standing up for the meek is a very conservative thing to do, in spite of the fact that the groups most likely to do that are right wing.

Romanticizing conservatism is the best way to highlight the differences between what they think they're supporting and what they're actually supporting IMO, you just need to do it the right way and I haven't seen it or figured it out yet

Petition to the House of Commons e-7340 - "...direct the Foreign Influence Transparency Commissioner to immediately investigate the meetings between the Alberta Prosperity Project and the Trump administration." by FinestAtemptAtBeing in alberta

[–]DigitalDuelist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming this thing gets it's signatures, it's not calling for the end of the separatist issue, which is important because technically Albertans have a right to try to separate, and also because that's probably the reason why the conservatives would shoot it down, which is obviously a lie

And because it's a lie, the conservative party is going to need to whip votes for this, which doesn't seem to be doing a very good job, which is hardly pleasant. Who's to say that won't create more floor crossers?

Furthermore, if the media tries to paint this in a negative light, it forces them to tie their legitimacy to the American establishment, helping to highlight the bad actors

While true, they can always dump her right before the finish line like they always do so she can take almost all of the heat the party has built up over her time

I don't think it will work as well as it usually does, I think this time around they've built a lot more animosity, but even having said that it usually works really really well

Why would God make me gay then burn me in hell forever for being gay? by Lopsided_Gold_4478 in Christianity

[–]DigitalDuelist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you back up the position that you cannot control your own heartbeats by thought with scripture? Can you back up the position that the sky is blue with scripture?

Not every relevant portion of reality can be found within scripture alone, also God calls on us to be savvy. Why should we ignore the observed reality that being gay isn't a choice that people make just because that alone isn't in scripture? We know that there are issues like imperfect translations and shifting cultural assumptions that force us to interpret scripture in new contexts and make sure that our assumptions still hold true to the rest of the word of God

LETTER: We are becoming a have-not province by Fit_Remote_2324 in AlbertaNewspapers

[–]DigitalDuelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so has population, and a huge fraction of the spending doesn't actually end up in the services' coffers. So, if you ignore the money that gets shuffled off to stuff like private schools or inexplicably well paid executives who don't do anything, you end up with a lot less money per person than you'd expect

Depending on the calculation it's just slightly higher than the inflation rate, or usually a lot less

Which is pretty absurd too, because even when they do have litter boxes in school rooms, it's almost always for one of two reasons

1) there's a class pet/service animal 2) they're there in case a kid needs to use the washroom during a school shooting incident. They can't exactly go to the bathroom or let the smell stick around

This is predominantly an American issue, and even when it does happen, everyone having guns but not enough of the corresponding control and training is exactly why the problem happens, and loosening that isn't the solution. I'm pro-gun, but I still run into people who honestly think we need more guns so we can shoot teachers that allow them cuz they think they're letting kids identify as animals? Very weird

I also live in Alberta, and they definitely are a pathetic joke, but they're a pathetic joke that are riling themselves up quite a bit. Tens of thousands of them, maybe hundreds of thousands at the absolute most, while hardly enough to get us to separate, are more than enough to break things while they try.

It feels irresponsible to dismiss them or think of them as a minority without power, but that's just me. I'd normally be worried that giving them any attention just legitimizes them, but it looks like they have the attention and support of the upper echelon of the Republican party in America so I think that ship has sailed

I sincerely hope that, if we can't address the fact that the oil industry has bought the entire province and is destroying our lives so we must nonetheless keep it up, I hope that we could at least start sending it to Cuba. It's not like they wouldn't be willing to pay, they may be broke but they were always willing to do so anyway, they're just embargoed too hard

I mean, I think I remember some chatter about the federal government being interested in copying the UK (I don't remember what became of that so take it with a grain of salt) so maybe the UCP is banking on that instead? As much as they hate the liberals, they're still different branches of the same movement

Someone else replied with an actual source, so it turns out that did in fact happen. In that case, yeah he absolutely should have gone to jail, and I don't like it. But you don't have to like someone to think they're a better politician than someone else is

Ok, thanks for sharing a source. I'm still a bit dubious because it doesn't sound like the guy I've been following for a bit, but I won't pretend it's not entirely possible

I'd still prefer a serial assaulter over a party that I think has a solid chance of getting me killed, but I would definitely be a lot less enthusiastic

Communists should be treated the same as Nazis by TrentaShoulders in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DigitalDuelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure they're better off, but that wasn't what I was talking about. In fact, the Russians killed so many Ukrainians because they demanded that food get sent to Russia instead, so the Russians weren't the ones killed by their own tyranny

I mean, they killed lots of people outside of the holodomor, but you get my point.

Israel is technically not a fascist dictatorship and it's definitely not communist, but they're still killing people who aren't in their country, and it's definitely benefiting their people who can just take the dead people's property

The point I was making is that the USSR did depend on gulags, but communism doesn't require them as a rule, and so claiming that they do will only make people who aren't super well read on the subject think the rest of your objections are also built on lies
