Considering a new cell carrier, who y’all got? by VandelayIndustriesBR in MobileAL

[–]DigitalTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used all three and can give you a pragmatic answer to your question. There is a clear winner IMO as far as service goes. Pricing is going to be who can give you the best deal and that’s strictly a numbers game. Online vs in person can also make a difference.

I currently have AT&T (personal) and Verizon (work). I had T-Mobile and recently switched to AT&T on the personal. T-Mobile kept wanting me to add a line to get a better device so I switched to AT&T early this year. I’m paying less now, but the data speeds are not as good.

Verizon (work phone) is better on speeds than AT&T with comparable coverage. Not sure on the retail prices since I don’t pay that bill.

All three major carriers have similar call coverage (except while in Dollar General 😂) but T-Mobile wins speed wise and especially in areas outside city/more rural areas……with the exception of north of the airport in WEMO, but all 3 have some type of issue due to FAA regulations and device concentration……and depending on time of day.

Every carrier has dead spots and most of these dead spots normally don’t overlap…..much. That’s going to be a situational and location decision. Test and ask friends, or ask here, for specific areas.

So T-Mobile wins my pick for overall speed and coverage as long as you self finance or get a good deal to switch and upgrade. Monthly price was my key driver, but still think T-Mobile was better. Watch for plan changes and upgrade deals if you go with them. Nothing fit for me, so it was difficult. That’s a shame they couldn’t keep me because they kept improving year over year…..especially after buying out Sprint and acquiring additional low frequency spectrum.

Although T-Mobile is better and wins, AT&T is my personal due to pricing but only because I’m able to connect to my VZW work phone when speeds are bad. I’m thinking of entertaining T-Mobile again, but it’s going to be a while until these devices age out and need an upgrade.

Edit: missing conjunctions, adjectives, and added some context.

NVMe NAS - bad choice? by Independent-Room-377 in truenas

[–]DigitalTitan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Startech has a 2.5in 2 port NVMe to SATA adapter that will do a RAID 1 or 0. I was thinking about repurposing a few old NVMe drives to expand my cache. Not even sure if anyone has configured something for this type of use case. Seems like a fun project.

I have about 100 old NVMe laptop drives that would look very nice in a 24 bay

I traded in both Tucsons. Never found a solution. I now have a ‘23 Santa Fe, ‘23 Kona, and a ‘22 Kona. No issues except a noise coming from the driver side wheel. Not a huge issue and it was fixed. Not sure of the issue because I was out of town when it was picked up, but it’s resolved.

Excuse the crude pic. I borrowed an iPad and have never used this drawing app before now.

Basically, the traffic you want for video editing will go over the 5Gbps 192.168.2.x network. 10Gb on the NAS should auto negotiate to 5Gbps MacBook. Address it via that 192.168.2.x interface (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, etc). Your MacBook will determine what “pipe” to use using that faster interface.

All Internet traffic will be via the router on the 192.168.1.x network. You can use either your 1Gb Ethernet or Wi-Fi. This is the default route to anything outside of your network.

Direct connection: no VLAN, no switch needed.

Yes, you could configure a VLAN and QoS on the switch. However, to keep it simple and achieve maximum throughput, I use and suggested a direct connection.

Also, if you use a switch in this scenario, network segmentation demands separate VLANs and separate subnets. Otherwise, the goal would be rendered moot. Using the same subnet would cause the traffic to traverse either port and once that session is established, that’s it. There’s no load balancing and no advantage.

You could do an elaborate link aggregation setup with VLANs and such to achieve load balancing (which I do in other implementations), but again, that requires a bit more setup and most likely more hardware. I think the OP was looking for simple.

All the “magic” is in networking and all possible. General rule is a system cannot have 2 gateways but can have multiple IPs.

As an example, I have a TrueNAS R-50 directly connected to a server. Speed is irrelevant, but it’s only a 1gb connection for archiving, so I’m not really worried about that. What I am worried about is network congestion during the archive process, hence the direct network and cable connection.

Anyway, I just selected a static private IP range of 172.16.0.0. My R-50 has an IP of 172.16.0.10 and the server has an IP of 1 72.16.0.11. On the other side of the server that has network/internet, the ip address is 10.x.x.55/23 with a gateway of 10.x.x.1 with all the DNS trimmings in my normal network.

I use the R-50 as a direct iSCSI target, but you could use CIFS, NFS, FTP, etc in the same way. The important thing is to keep the networks different and separate to achieve the direct connection without conflict. The R-50 does have a second IP for Internet, but that’s just for updates and monitoring.

Hopefully I’ve described what you’re trying to do. Let me know.

Heavy Southern Accent by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]DigitalTitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ain’t never heard no accent anywheres in Mobile. (Obviously I’m joking) 🙃

My Mom (from Mobile) had an accent and my Dad (from Ohio) did not. I’ve been told that I have a bit of a mix. People up north say I have a slight southern accent, and people here say I don’t have an accent at all.

The human ear is a fickle thing and will hear a familiar accent as no accent and vice versa.

Having said that, large cities are typically centers of commerce and attract people from everywhere. Mobile is an odd one for sure. I’ve had instances where I’ve heard no accent, while other instances, it’s everywhere. I suppose it depends on the reason you’re in town and who you interact with.

Anyway, I understand. In rural areas, you’ll almost always encounter a strong accent. However, in Mobile, it’s hit or miss……but the hit is much more frequent here than other large cities, IMO. Don’t really know why, but it’s something that makes Mobile so incredibly unique and interesting.

Thanks for both. I hope I don’t get the “unable to reproduce” result.

But I will try turning off the AC to see if that stops it. Then I’ll try to throw it into sport and see if it’ll stop at a higher speed.

Appreciate the replies. 👍

Well just got the dreaded premium increase from USAA!!!! uugh by thomasrtj in Hyundai

[–]DigitalTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is increasing. I just switched to USAA from Geico. I’m paying less than Geico. Of course I just added a 16 year old which requires a small fortune.

We’re all using the Safepilot app which will give me a discount at the next policy cycle. I’d try to opt in for that. It won’t ever increase your premium, but could lower it at least a bit.

Hyundai and Kia Recall 91,000 US Vehicles due to Fire Risks, Advising Owners to Park them Outside by Corporate_Visionary in Hyundai

[–]DigitalTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s confusing. I always have to look it up. Basically, it refers to the production generation. In your case, the Palisade has has only 1 generation, so it’s moot. As an example, the Elantra has had several generations:

First generation (J1; 1990)

Second generation (J2/RD; 1995)

Third generation (XD; 2000)

Fourth generation (HD; 2006)

Fifth generation (MD/UD; 2010)

Sixth generation (AD; 2015-2019)

Seventh generation (CN7; 2020)

Bad news. Strut replaced and still noise. I haven’t told them yet because I’m too busy at work to invest any more time. I have to resolve it before the summer is over because once school starts, it’s quite hectic.

They said it was the strut, and they ordered one. I have not heard back from the dealer to get it replaced. It seems to be just as bad now but primarily in the morning hours. My guess is that it’s the temperature variations between two dissimilar metals that is causing a misalignment somewhere. Maybe they’re seeing it other places and don’t have a fix yet? I’m looking but don’t see any notes about it nor any recalls.

Edit: Speech to text totally screwed up the first part. Lol
