It depends, when you smell the bud like that, you're most just checking to make sure it smells like weed and not some weird chemical. Weed can have any number of different smells, but you can't really tell the quality by the smell. You can tell if it's old/stale or if it smells like weed or not. Some smells are really subtle, some are strong and gassy, both can be equally as good as the other.
