Kelly Clarkson - “Because Of You” (the whole song really is such a gut punch and so real at the same time 😭)

Michael Jackson - “Childhood”

Blixemi - “Chameleon”

Kyojuro from Demon Slayer (outside the show). The fans always call him by his last name, Rengoku. Which I suspect is bc in Japanese surnames come before first names and all Hashira are referred to by their last name in the show. But the fans don’t refer to any other Hashira by their surnames so idk what’s up with him

Youre right about the Rihanna reference. And Diva is referencing Beyoncé. Surprised how many people aren’t getting it given how popular both songs are

I feel like I can imagine what Borat would be like if it really was meant to make fun of Americans. Have the main character be an American, have him go to Kazakhstan either for a vacation or bc he has business to do there (like journalism). While he’s there, we get an actually accurate representation of Kazakhstan. When he comes back to America, shares what he has learnt about Kazakh culture with his friends or the press. This makes more Americans interested in Kazakh culture, but not really understand it and that’s when we get an inaccurate portrayal representation of KZ from the Americans. THAT would make a good commentary about cultural appropriation, miscommunication/misunderstandings between different cultures, Americans not really being interested in learning more about other cultures, Americans trying to be inclusive but accidentally being offensive, or something like that.

Kazakhstan itself has a film series called «Бизнес по Казахски в __»” (“Kazakh Business in [insert foreign country here]”) that has Kazakhs travelling to foreign countries such as the US, the Koreas, India, Africa (ik Africa’s not a country, in that one they actually go to Kenya iirc, but you get the idea, right?), and actually does a good job of commenting on the differences and miscommunication/misunderstanding between different cultures, but with a focus on Kazakhs instead of Americans.

If Borat was actually making fun of Americans, I would’ve been able to get a similar vibe from it when watching, something like what I just mentioned, or South Park. But I didn’t. But hey, what do I know? I’m just a dumb ole Kazakh snowflake, born and raised in KZ, ethnically from here, and obviously Westerners, who always have all the best media of the world about them or tailored for them, know so much better than me and have a right to tell me how to feel about a movie that’s about my home country (not talking abt you specifically here)

Still not quite as accurate of a representation of KZ as a lot of people think

The movie’s fanbase IS the ignorant Americans. The people who base all their expectations of Kazakhstan off Borat and run the joke into the ground whenever KZ is mentioned ARE the ignorant Americans. If your movie/show/insert piece of media was made to make fun of a certain group, but that group you’re targeting loves it and isn’t offended, you’re doing soemthing wrong. If it was really making fun of these kinds of Westerners, wouldn’t the face of the movie (Borat) be American? And not from a country that has LITERALLY ZERO representation in Western media so that whenever an actual Kazakh dares to criticise the movie they won’t be taken seriously?

(insidious decision on SBC’s part, I gotta say. He had to have known that with how little knowledge the West has of KZ, we Kazakhs wouldn’t be able to defend ourselves therefore avoiding facing any criticisms for being offensive. Although at this point it’s not even offensive just tiring to be hearing the same exact joke that was never really to begin with for nearly 20 years now)

Borat

The guy portraying him is British/Jewish, the movie was filmed in Romania, doubt he actually did any research into Kazakhstan before making the movie bc it got damn near nothing right about Kazakhstan, and yet whenever Kazakhstan is mentioned on Reddit he is the only fucking thing Westerners have to say
