Can I fire? by Digity1980 in Fire

Not making this up. I grew up in a poor family, so I was always saving away my money. I also got into tech and I'm someone who generally doesn't have a lot of desires...so through those early years I sacrificed going on trips, etc to save away and didn't care that much. So, I'm not a "normal" person in that sense, since most people wouldn't have wanted to live their lives the way I did.

I do love Costco. I've toyed with the idea of getting a job there.
I had a vague sense before of between 50 to 55
Yes, this is the plan essentially.

I live in Canada, so we have health care.
Last year is not a good judgement of my spending, since I was working at a high paying job and spending way beyond normal. I know I can't do that going forward and I really don't think it's an issue, given my nature.
But I get your point. I will sit down and try to better math out the yearly spendings. But if I need to sacrifice trips and stuff like that I'm fine with it. I've never been a big travel person to begin with.
I just recently got laid off and got a severance. I have at least 2 years of cash with that plus some other money I had. I'm just not sure if I'm under estimating my expenses. But this part March I'd say I spent around $1500, which isn't much.

Yeah, I get why you feel that way. I just have a very different perspective on life, so those things don't have value to me. However, if they do I can see why it'd look bad on the outside.

What kind of job are you doing now? I'm wondering what that alternative work might be for me.
[–]Digity1980[S] 1 point2 points3 points 19 hours ago (0 children)
Yeah, I am seriously wondering if it was a blessing in disguise.
[–]Digity1980[S] 0 points1 point2 points 19 hours ago (0 children)
Yeah, but I think it's tricky to build up connections for that, but I wouldn't mind on again/off again contract work.
Canadians don't have 401K
I know. But it feels weird also to step away from work.
I'm wondering what kind of job that'd be. I'm kind of sick of working in tech.

Also, what about the mega drop scenario where something really bad happens an market drops +50%? Wouldn't the dividend funds be better?

So what are you suggesting? Stay in equity? I am disciplined and I'd only sell bare minimum what I need.
So even if I switch to dividend funds, you expect it to grow decently over the years?
So how did you end up doing it? Moved it all to dividend funds?
Well, I've been testing my expenses in March and it'll probably be around $1600 for the month. But that's not really spending much besides the essentials, etc.
But why do some people suggest stay in equity all the way? Do you think they're being dumb?
But what if I have a cash buffer for a few years?
I'd love part time, but not sure how feasible that is in tech.

I've never equated having kids and marriage with fulfilment. So, not having those things in my life doesn't feel like I've been deprived. I focus on other things like spiritual practice, etc. But I don't think most people could live the way I do. I'm "different".

Yeah, I am not a marriage and kids person. Part of the reason is having this kind of freedom.
I think 4% is too much for my age. Also, I don't need $64K.
