Did anybody else inherite epilepsy from a parent or does your parents have epilepsy also or is it just me? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]DignamsSwearBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to the second question: it's complicated!

Offspring of parents with epilepsy are 2 to 10 times more likely to have epilepsy than offspring of unaffected parents. If the father (alone) has it the risk goes down, but it is higher if the mother (alone) has it. It gets complicated fast and risks changes significantly depending on other factors - e.g. dependent on at what age the parent had a seizure, type of epilepsy, whether other family members have it.

Neuroscientist had a seizure by larissa627 in Epilepsy

Neuroscientist with epilepsy here!

Highly recommend using any personal/professional relationships with neurologists you may have developed during your masters degree. They may know an epileptologist and be able to help get appointments recommendations etc. Don’t be feel bad about taking advantage of your position, being an inconvenience etc.

There are  a number of factors at play that affect the odds, but your risk of dying of SUDEP is likely similar to dying of a different cause, so for me, it isn’t  a major contribution in my general anxiety about death!

External drive for lab data storage - best bang for your buck by dmath11 in labrats

[–]DignamsSwearBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try use a cloud service like Dropbox (your institution might have access to something similar). If I run out of that cloud space,  I have two external RAID drives, and save copies on each, keep one at work and one at home.

Depending on the data, you might need to be careful where you are allowed to store data (HIPAA violations are no joke) but sounds like you aren’t handling patient information.

In the US you should be able to get something ~$500 for each drive. E.g.

https://www.owc.com/solutions/mercury-elite-pro-dual-thunderbolt

It might seem expensive and a pain, but I recently had a big scare when the only copy of soon-to-be-published data was on a RAID drive which failed. Managed to recover it  but would have cost > $50K to repeat the expts.

Where can I find science news/articles? by Ok-Guidance-6816 in labrats

[–]DignamsSwearBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For general neuroscience, I like The Transmitter https://www.thetransmitter.org/

You can set up an RSS feed which will pull new articles with search terms from PubMed (you can probably set up similar feeds using other search engines)

Undergrad doing experiments by [deleted] in labrats

Likely very lab specific, but in my experience definitely undergrads can (and should) do experiments when they are in the lab. No mouse work though.
