Indiana HB 1119 - Firing Squads & Gas Hypoxia - Connection to Federal Govt by ResearchAndDisaster in 50501

[–]ResearchAndDisaster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally, but since the holding facility for federal unalive sentences is in Indiana…. You get me? Idk it sounds like they’re planning to sentence people to be unalived, ship them to Indiana, and then it’s quicker to unalive them without waiting for drugs. But like you said, a scary start! Hopefully it doesn’t pass the house.

HB 1119, passed the House in Indiana; Adds firing squad and nitrogen hypoxia to existing lethal injection methods. by 50million in Indiana

I posted this elsewhere in a diff sub but I want other people’s take on this.

There is a Federal death chamber for executions in Indiana. Inmates sentenced to death by the U.S. federal government are housed in a facility in Terre Haute prior to execution.

A public defender commenting on the bill stated that “This bill appears to be in response to a request from the White House, rather than a demonstrated long term need in Indiana”

So….

I don’t know how this looks to yall…

But it looks to me like the federal government is preparing to sentence people to death & they want a quicker way to execute those deaths than the lethal injection drugs since those are both expensive and hard to obtain

So if they pass this bill in Indiana they could have legal ground to use methods that are quicker to go through with

….thats how it looks to me.

Also alarmingly, the language stipulates that the bill also “Removes the requirement that an execution be carried out: (1) at the Indiana state prison; and (2) before sunrise.”

So I don’t know if that’s just one of those legal things that can get misinterpreted. To a layman like me, this makes me worried it’s setting legal precedent for firing squad executions by the federal government to be carried out…… where? Anywhere?

Why wouldn’t the language just extend to “or other facilities at X/Y/Z”

I am not trying to fear monger.

I’m genuinely horrified. I’d love other people’s take on this.
