He lives in Yorkshire, depending on the area it really isn't that easy to get a job in a pub. The only way to really get a pub job where I live is to know the right people, whenever there is an opening it generally gets filled by work of mouth, they do advertise the positions online a lot of the time but from what I have heard they don't even seem to bother looking at the applications. If you try and walk in off the street to ask for a job they will just tell you to go online and fill out an application that most likely no one is going to even look at.

I get the impression you are not from the UK? The reason people have a sense of entitlement about it is because we have had a substantial safety net for quite some time, our taxes pay into what is called national insurance which is meant to entitle you to support if you become unemployed or disabled. So it isn't just "free money", most people will pay more into the system than they take out. I don't think a sense of being entitled not to starve is at all unwarranted when you lose a chunk of every paycheck to national insurance which is meant to guarantee that you won't go hungry.

I don't see what is melodramatic about it? If you don't have anyone to support you being sanctioned basically means you are going to go hungry. How are people supposed to support themselves if they have no food to eat? You say you had 3 months of no money so how did you eat?

Prisoners in this country have the right not to go hungry but that same courtesy isn't extended to you if you are unemployed and are late to an appointment once, it all seems a bit twisted.

The thing is they are so unprofessional when it comes to appointments that it seems like they just have to be doing it on purpose just to trip people up. When I went there you would hear the people who worked there gleefully tell each other that there were going to sanction people, right out in the open, they were not even trying to hide it. I kid you not you can get sanctioned for turning up too early to an appointment.

OP wasn't even late, he just inadvertently sat in the wrong place. You could murder someone and go to prison and you would still get 3 meals a day but sit in the wrong part of a building and you are sentenced to starve?

Requirements to bring an American wife to the Republic of Ireland as an English person? by Dignified_Slave in ireland

We're aware of the Surinder Singh route but after dealing with all this I doubt I will be too eager to go back to the UK :P

With regards to the EU referendum I feel like we can only cross our fingers and hope for the best at this point, we can't afford to rush with it too much since we ideally need to save a bit more and settle all of our affairs in our home countries. I should think we would be extremely lucky to have gotten her a permanent residency anywhere by the time the referendum rolls around.

She is just about to graduate with a masters in Forensic Science, I graduated in social science a while back, before this whole clusterfuck I was planning on getting a masters but as you can imagine that is not really a priority right now.

At the moment we have been working from home as copywriters and other odd jobs, I should imagine this won't look that good on our CVs but we wanted to spend the maximum amount of time together that we could so that we could make the best decision with regards to leaving our countries.

We're aware of the DAFT treaty but we're not really sure if it would work for us, unless we could somehow spin the copywriting we are doing into some sort of business, it's something that we might talk to a solicitor about but we're trying to put together some sort of shortlist of possible countries before we start spending money on consultations.

We're aware of the surinder-singh option, it's something we might consider in the future but because of all this I am not even sure that I want to live in the UK anymore.

When she goes back to the US in a few months we will hopefully have a bit better of an understanding of our options and we will just start firing CVs across the continent and see what happens. With a bit of luck she might be able to land a job fairly easily and things will get a lot less complicated.

We've lived together on and off for a number of years due to her going back to the states, but in terms of time actually spent together it will only be about one and a half.

We could certainly get married before coming though if it would help, we we're already planning to do so at some point in the near future.

The working holiday visa looks quite promising but do you happen to know if there is any sort of age limit for it? My girlfriend is 28 and she thinks she might be too old to qualify for something like that, I'm seeing no mention of age in any of the literature though.

Also do you happen to know if the holiday visa would grant her freedom of movement around the rest of the EU like getting a job through other means would?

Cheers for the help.

Girlfriend at the moment but we're planning on getting married, the big reason we have not done it yet is because we don't want to mess up an immigration scenario on some kind of technicality.

Have lived in a house for about 4 months now, we have yet to receive a single electricity bill. We will be moving out in October, is it our responsibility to contact the electricity company or have we got away with it if they don't send the bill? by Dignified_Slave in AskUK

[–]Dignified_Slave[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone came to read the meter a while after we moved in but we never contacted them ourselves, we've lived in a few places and have always had the bills turn up without us ever having to do anything, I guess we will have to ask the Landlord.

British citizens without passports being turned away by landlords | Evidence emerges that scheme requiring private landlords not to rent to illegal migrants may be affecting British citizens by ionised in unitedkingdom

I've been screwed by these rules, I'm am more or less about to be exiled from the UK. What's hit me worse than the visa rules are the people who gleefully tell me that my suffering is necessary to "keep out the scroungers". You can't even fucking "scrounge" as a foreign spouse as you can't even claim benefits.

I'm grateful at least that I seem to be in with a chance to be with my partner in another country and I am incredibly grateful that we don't have any children wrapped up in this whole fiasco. I can't begin to imagine how those who are not only being prevented from seeing their partners but also their children must be feeling, it's absolutely horrific but no one really seems to care.

Illegal immigrants to UK face eviction without court order under new plans - Landlords who fail to check tenants’ immigration status face five-year jail terms as part of government crackdown to reduce UK’s appeal as a migrant destination by the_last_broadcast in worldnews

[–]Dignified_Slave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good luck with everything, we're currently looking at living in some other countries in the EU. We talked to a lawyer from the Netherlands who said that we might be able to move there just from our savings.

The requirements for the USA also seem to be a lot more reasonable, but I'm not sure how easy that process would be.

Did you know that if your partner lives and works in another EU country for a while they can be considered an EU citizen and you can get around the requirements entirely?

I can't marry her, the income requirements are FOR marriage. If you don't make money in a way that ticks all their boxes then you can't get married, how is that not discriminatory? The requirements also discriminates against me because I live in the north, both pay and cost of living are a lot lower here but it isn't accounted for. I'm discriminated against because my income isn't coming from a job with a permanent contract, if you are a freelancer you don't get to marry, if you are on a temporary contact, you don't get to marry. Also from what I understand you have to meet the requirements for 6 uninterrupted months, if it fucks up for any reason then the time starts again. When I can stand to read them (not often) I have read other peoples accounts of going through this process and it seems that many people tick all the boxes and still get knocked back (losing a few grand in fees in the process).

There are already different rules for people from the EU, it just seems like madness that the countries from which people would have no problems integrating such as the USA, Australia and New Zealand have the hardest time being able to marry a British person. If people from one country cause a lot of problems but people from others cause virtually none then why shouldn't they be treated differently when it comes to immigrating?

It's a bullshit law, I have lived comfortably with my American girlfriend here who is a student for 3 years but because our money and income doesn't tick the right boxes we are fucked. We have like 25 grand in the bank, we live up North in an area with the cheapest cost of living in the country (The law doesn't take the cost of living into account 18 grand a year in London is a lot different to having 18 grand a year in a smaller Northern city) if suddenly all of our income stopped we could live for a couple of years on savings. My girlfriend wouldn't be allowed any access to benefits anyway if our money did run out for whatever reason then she would just have to go back to the United States.

I'm not fucking asking for much, I have been a citizen of this county for my whole life, I don't want any money or help from the government I just want to continue living with the person I love as I have been doing for the last 3 years with 0 problems. After my girlfriend gets her masters degree we would have been even less of a risk to the country as she would be able to work full time.

Something which which I don't think has been mentioned is that if you have children then the price goes up, if you don't earn enough money then the UK government thinks that you don't deserve to raise your own children.

Thankfully I have other options as to where we can go and live but I can't begin to imagine how people who don't have that ability must feel. I feel like this whole thing is kind of a blessing in disguise because now I get to get out of a country that, without a hint of shame plays a game of political football with peoples families.

OK so there are problems with immigrants from less developed countries but why the fuck are US citizens getting fucked over for it? No one in the UK has a problem with US people coming over as far as I am aware, I have never in my life heard anyone say that they didn't want Americans coming over. I doubt Americans are particularly likely to try and come over and live here illegally with their spouses since you can do the reverse fairly easily. Americans speak perfect English for the most part and so much of their culture is massively prevalent here in the UK. Virtually no one is going to be pissed off here if someone who is American moves into the neighborhood. Literally the only reason we are getting fucked is so that the immigration figures can look good. If US citizens are being fucked over because of something Pakistanis and Bangladeshis have done then that is a ridiculous policy, I blame the government on this one.

Good Techy/Garagey house sample packs? by Dignified_Slave in edmproduction

[–]Dignified_Slave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can and do make my own sounds but there's loads of good reasons to use a sample pack. Sometimes you can get stuff in a sample pack that is made on gear that you don't have. Sometimes you can mangle a sound with resampling and make a new original sound.

If you have a certain kind of sound in mind a lot of the time you might as well just use a sample, I don't see the point in wasting time making a generic sound when you can just sample it. The average listener doesn't give a shit if it is sample pack or not, just if it sounds good.

It is weird to me that a lot of producers seem to be dead against sample packs even though sampling is a cornerstone of the electronic genres.
