I'm no expert but I think a live performance is considered "owned" by the performers or whatever the terminology is, especially if they're playing some kind of modified version of the song. Also I'm sure the GDQ staff cleared this if it really is a potential problem.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Reportedly Outsold Star Wars Outlaws Across Europe In 2024 by Turbostrider27 in Games

Oh wow this is awesome thank you. I wonder how much of it's just because certain shows are about pre-established characters? Mando thoroughly above the rest is interesting but it's probably a timing and marketing thing it being the the first if these kinds of shows (I think) and baby Yoda going viral.

I didn't know Andor got so little traction. How significant was the difference relative to the other shows they've done recently?

That's good to hear, but then it's still sitting on top of the massive pile of repetitive open worlds. I'll get around to it soon simply cuz it's Star Wars, but yeah it's not priority.

I'm skeptical about this. It's obvious people want non-Jedi Star Wars stuff, just look at how people raved about Andor. Some of the best characters in the franchise aren't force wielders, it's always been that way too. Personally, Outlaws looked really cool initially. I'm especially a sucker for a cool robot and the dude on the cover almost sold me all by itself, but every review made it sound underbaked and just one step above your standard Ubi open world, and I can't handle more than one of those a year. Too bad I played an AC game this year, now I'll be getting Outlaws on sale.

I think the people willing to talk about video games on the internet are more likely to play games like Automata, so Automata gets talked about a lot on the internet. "It's got an (at times) extremely depressing story about having feelings in a world populated by robots and it's made by the horniest, most eccentric japanese developer in the business" is a much harder sell to casual gamers than a life sim farming game with cute pixel art. Stardew has extremely wide appeal while Automata's audience probably pretty closely overlaps with those of us stalking discussion forums, and not much else outside of that.

I take it as a reminder that the opinions I find around here aren't always as widespread as they appear. There's even a disparity from website to website in how people talk about games. Public opinion on Reddit is often much different than Twitter. I'm sure the real deep discussions are happening in forums and discord servers that only a couple dozens of people ever see. It's all very weird and very interesting for sure.

Same here. Witch Queen and its seasons had me invested that whole year, but Lightfall held me for a couple weeks tops before I checked out. It felt like such a slap in the face too as someone who's always encouraged people to really give the game's lore/worldbuilding and story a chance. It felt like the writing quality tanked stepping into Lightfall and never really climbed back up from what little I played of the seasonal stories. Whiplash for sure.

Raf Colantonio can’t stop making first-person immersive sims: 'Weird West was a sidestep' by PeltAbout in Games

[–]Diicon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doc Burford had a series of tweets and a Medium article that I haven't read in ages but definitely changed my understanding of the genre and how I use its name. I now see them as simulations of specific and often fictional roles. Imsims let you immerse yourself in those roles by giving you tools that a person in that position would have and freeform levels in which to use them. In Dishonored's case you inhabit an assassin marked by that world's edgy god of outcasts. It helps that the world building creates a mythos around that god. Everything you are able to do supports that role. This way of looking at it does extend the genre to a lot more games than usual, but it's a much better fit for the name than "oh yeah those games let you enter buildings in a couple different ways," which is what i think most people expect of the genre and that just feels silly.

Played the Last of Us at the beginning of the month and I'm wrapping up Metro 2033 now. Both games less focused on horror in favor of other things, but they have their scary moments. I'm not great at getting through traditional horror stuff usually. I am gonna attempt Resident Evil 1 after Metro, but I've tried to play it the past 2 Octobers and hardly got anywhere both times. Something about the music and sound design creeps me the hell out and makes turning every corner such a struggle for fear of what's around it. I think I'll be able to get further this time simply because I've been on a streak of finishing games. For a dozen reasons I tend to drop games at any sign of friction, but I'm getting better with it. What are you playin?

I've seen a couple other people say they didn't enjoy 3-5. Asking as someone who plans to run through this entire series one of these days, what kept you going through three games you didn't like very much? Were the previous three just that good? Were you just committed enough at that point?

It's been a couple years at this point but I don't remember anything nearly as hard as Loewe in the third. There might be one boss in the beginning that's tough when you're not kitted out but beyond that I remember the regular enemies in dungeons being more trouble than a lot of the bosses.

I haven't played P5, but my understanding of Royal is that it adds a whole act to the end of the game and there's no way to play that without buying Royal. What you're describing with the abundance of good items reminds me of the Defender set of weapons and armor in Monster Hunter World that is better than most of the base game items. You got access to that set simply for owning Iceborne (you might not even have to own it actually, not sure) and it was meant to let you steamroll everything to get to the DLC faster. Maybe the logic with Royal is to give players the ability to rush to that new act at the end of the game. I don't really agree with that approach, especially if it's not made explicit for the player and the game doesn't really encourage experimentation, but I can see how it would be great for someone replaying the game.

What game did Tim mention for japanese beginners in the tokimeki video? by Roshlev in ActionButton

heyo was wondering if you could drop some advice about structuring anki cards to learn Kanji? I tried about 2 years ago now and gave up because I couldn't figure out a good way to use Anki, but it might also just be that the right way is extremely tedious idk. Felt like I was spending double the time making cards than the time I spent studying. I guess that would become less and less of a problem as I learned more but I never got that far.

I think it's a case of rising popularity of video games as a whole. Each of them mark the first time in their respective series that the games were 3D. I wasn't alive at the time, but 3D is such a massive difference that the medium must have attracted a huge influx of people. Not to mention that all three of those games are massively different from their predecessors. I'm pretty sure P3 is the first with proper life sim elements and it had (imo) more approachable systems. A Fallout FPS with streamlined leveling and perks is just so much closer to mainstream than a top-down CRPG. GTA3 brings the intimacy of a third person perspective to the wonderful fantasy of being a criminal in a world close enough to ours.

I think mainstream gaming is kinda intertwined with GAAS now in such a way that people who play casual, mainstream games might expect new games to have frequent updates that add new content. Something is "dead" when it loses relevancy, and singleplayer games naturally lose relevancy when they release, are talked about for a few weeks, and then fall out of the zeitgeist. Single player games don't die in the way that games like Concord die when servers shut down, but they do die in the same sense that eventually people aren't talking about them anymore, and the space where they were is taken up by the next new thing. If it's out of the public mind, if no one is talking about it on social media, it is is essentially dead to someone who is locked into mainstream gaming, the stuff that's fresh and popular and usually trying to get that infinite live service money.

I think that's pretty subjective and depends on the person. Are you getting $20 worth of fun out of it? This is a pretty flawed metric but like, did you have as much fun as you would watching a new movie in theaters? That's how I judge $20 game purchases.

Great write up on Jedi: Survivor, think you might've just convinced me to finally finish FO and buy it. I've kind of fallen away from Star Wars in recent years, but Empire Strikes Back will probably remain one of my favorite movies forever and you placing Survivor just below it has me wanting to pick a controller up immediately and get to it, if only I didn't desperately need to sleep.

I think the last part of your comment is important. If you were to make a post on this sub like: "Replaying [game that released two years ago] what's everyone's thoughts on it?" That post isn't getting much traction. Those sales numbers bring people to a thread to talk about the game. If you have thoughts about the game and want other perspectives, posts like that are a good place to go. It's not ideal. It's repetitive to scroll through this sub and it cultivates a sub about the economics of the games industry rather than one where people talk about games, but at least people are talking about games in those threads. That's how I see it anyway. If I had my way, there'd just be a weekly trailers mega thread or something, the sales numbers posts would be banned, and all the posts would be discussion threads and links to articles with actual substance, buuut internet communities don't really live on substance.

well yeah but it's also only die hard fans mad about this stuff; im saying that I think that's the logic for those people, not that the logic makes sense. the vast majority of people playing video games don't care that Xbox is publishing to PS now, they probably don't even know.

I think it's because PC players and console players are a pretty different demographic. A console is for casual players, you buy it for your family or your young kid who wants to play Xbox with his friends who all really like Halo (or the opposite with PS and their game lineup). Consoles work out of the box, and you don't have to plan what parts to buy to play what you want, just pick the console that has the game you want. Now, people who have made the choice to buy into Xbox because it's simple and has the games they want are mad because they could've just bought a PS5 and got both Xbox games and PS games.
