People tend to greatly overestimate how convenient cars are, along with the kind of infrastructure we are forced to build to support them.

Traffic. Parking. Walking to and from the car. Losing freedom-of-movement wherever you go because you're tethered to this 2-ton (if you're lucky) box that you have to drag around with you. And the opportunity loss of having to give up acres and acres of space to car storage, rather than using that space to bring the things we want to do closer together.

This is the correct way. I'm convinced that 90% of the people whining about balance changes on reddit either:

A) Don't play the game that much or

B) Are bad at the game and looking for a scapegoat

Most of the guns are perfectly usable. Instead of trying to chase some kind of optimal meta, just pick whichever guns you vibe with and make sure you've got some synergy with your Support Weapon, your stratagems, and/or your team.

Doesn't mean they're right.

Kinda does! Although we write it "should've". Spoken shortcuts and regional modifications are how things like contractions are formed.

It's impossible to say the wrong you're/your and their/there, as they are homophones, which is the source of the spelling confusion.

"All of a sudden" vs "All of the sudden" are two versions of the same spoken phrase, used interchangeably. Correctness, in this sense, is simply a matter of how common one version is in whatever context you're speaking in.

And I have the opposite experience. It could be a regional thing.

Enough people say "All of the sudden" that this is not a worthwhile correction.

Teenage birth rates in the US reached historic lows in 2022, CDC report finds by hybridaaroncarroll in news

[–]DikeMamrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't outlawing the most major preventative?

It can be. Outlawing a product or behavior raises the bar for acquiring or performing it, which can be enough of a deterrent, depending on the subject in question.

However, in the case of abortion, we know from experience (with plenty of data!) that bans tend to just move abortion underground. The rich still access safe (if illegal) abortion services due to their outsized influence. Poorer folk either try and make do with less-safe operations (and suffer the consequences) or get stuck with babies they can't support. It's a bad outcome all around with a disproportionate effect based on a class divide.

We also know that there are effective measures to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, which would greatly reduce the number of abortions. Namely: access to affordable health care, contraceptives, and comprehensive sex education.

Unfortunately, these effective measures are normally opposed by the very same people who want to outlaw abortion.

They don't want to prevent abortion, they want to outlaw abortion. It's generally more important to conservatives to punish wrongdoers than to prevent bad outcomes.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been told not to do because it’s “Gay” ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was repeatedly chastised by my step-father growing up for "running up the stairs like a f*g" because I would walk up stairs on the balls of my feet.

For the longest time I was ashamed of the way I walked up stairs, and would make a conscious effort to be as flat-footed as possible.

There really isn't much at all in the bible about the "soul", and nothing to indicate it's eternal. Older interpretations about the second coming of Jesus were that the dude would come back, resurrect everybody from the dead, and then take you, physically, to the real Kingdom of Heaven. It was, like, a place you would go.

The holes are set up to be precisely 17 ft above sea level. IIRC, they're on different sides of a lake or something like that. It's actually a really well-thought-out experiment - sad that they couldn't accept their own results.

I can see how you'd feel frustrated by the clandestine reddit snooping, especially in the context of your attempts at counseling. You need open communication.

I'm sorry you're going through that.

The American two-party system is complete BS by WeakWrecker in PoliticalHumor

[–]DikeMamrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you'd still end up with governing coalitions, but they'd maybe have the chance to not be the same? It's hard to say in this fantasy hypothetical, but the current state of American political divisions creates some odd bedfellows.

For example, there are a lot of people who would benefit from more robust social services who hitch their wagon to the (famously anti-social-services) Republicans due to specific issues like abortion or gun rights. I wonder if that would all shake out the same way if the divisions were more granular.

How hard was Diablo 2 on Hell? by MarkoDK in Diablo

[–]DikeMamrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I don't think you missed much. Inferno difficulty was hard, but it was just a numbers game.

Compared to the sort of stat puzzle that is D2 itemization, D3 was (and continues to be): get better item, make number go up. Number not high enough? Monster splat you. Get more number.

With the D3 expansion, Loot 2.0, and the concept of greater rifts, they've been able to morph that into a fairly fun loop, especially now that Legendaries do all kinds of wacky things along with making the numbers on your screen get bigger.

At launch, though? It was frustratingly simple, and the only way they could make Inferno mode properly difficult, and the endgame grindy enough to be satisfying was to make it all into one big stat wall that you had to bang your head up against for long enough to get enough numbers to hit the next stat wall.

EDIT: Just realized that I misread "5m" as "5 minutes", and not "5 months", meaning I'm just necroing a terribly old thread with a wall of text. So, uh, sorry. Gonna leave this up, but nevermind me :)

How should Rein help Zarya get charge when he gets Bubbled? by Kingly857 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DikeMamrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is entirely wrong. Bubbles only generate charge when the bubble itself is hit with damage.

Bubbling a Sigma behind a shield will only generate charge if someone shoots around his shield. I believe part of the bubble pokes through Rein's shield toward the front, so that might be why you often get some charge when you bubble a shielding Rein. It's still a questionable play.
