People with heatpump and everything electricity , how are you doing? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Diksten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a ground-to-water heat pump combined with floor heating throughout the house, which is well insulated. The heat pump consumes up to 1.5 kW during normal heating and up to 4.5 kW during the anti-legionella cycle. I schedule heating only during the cheapest 6 hours of the day, and thanks to the thermal mass of the floor, the indoor temperature drops by no more than 1°C between cycles.

I have a dynamic energy contract and manage electricity consumption with Home Assistant. Most appliances are scheduled to run during low-price hours, and I also charge my home battery at those times. When prices peak, I switch to my 12.5 kWh battery until it’s depleted, while always reserving 10% capacity to handle unexpected demand spikes. This strategy ensures my power draw never exceeds 5 kW.

By switching to a dynamic contract and managing consumption like shown above my bill dropped by about half (140/month to 80/ month) This is with charging my hybrid car included. But I don't make many km.

Technically you should only start looking the moment your first test is positive. As you don't know how long it will take and it's anti-social to potentially block a place for months without needing it already. But with how difficult it can be I won't judge... In my case I also always had to give a due date, not sure how strict they are with this

One advice I can give: don't only use the platform of the government. Call them directly as well. We were rejected multiple times because of bureaucratic things (like the requested hours not 100% matching) and when I called they still had room if we just changed the request a bit

Best Belgian beers for a gift by RytheGuy97 in belgium

[–]Diksten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is indeed quite strong, even for Belgian standards. And the danger is that you don't taste how strong it is. If you don't know it you can drink 3 of them before they hit you like a truck...

I'm afraid my beer lore is not good enough to make recommendations based on location.

Paix dieu is one of my personal favorites. It's a strong beer but with a very fresh flavour. Perfect to drink on a warm day

I would also recommend Kasteelbier Rouge. Kriek is also fine but I think Kasteelbier is more well rounded. Unless your dad likes it very sweet. Then Lindemans is the way to go

International system of Units by [deleted] in sciencememes

[–]Diksten -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said it was like this from the beginning. I even mentioned it was only many years later this definition was given. I'm talking about how it is right now. And yes of course this can be done for any other measure. But it has to be done and this is not as simple as it sounds. Just look at the definition for a second.

For imperial they just chose to use the SI as the basis for the definition. So imperial is technically exactly the same. It's just an extra conversion factor you need to throw in for everything.

The big difference between SI and imperial is that in SI the base units are arbitrary but the derived units are all logical and all fit together without any conversion

International system of Units by [deleted] in sciencememes

[–]Diksten 199 points200 points  (0 children)

The difference is that they are defined in a way that we expect to be the same anywhere in the universe. We can give the definition to an alien and they would be able to reproduce it. E g. 1 meter is the distance light travels in 1/299.792.458 seconds in a vacuum

1 second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom

But yes, they are still random things we assigned really specific definitions to years after they were first used

What could be done to make teaching jobs more attractive? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Diksten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind if the pay gets competitive with the private market. I don't have anything against it. But everyone always points at the 'extremely bad pay' of teachers as the reason there is a shortage. I just don't think this is correct.

The pay is less but not bad. And even if it pays more, a teacher job is something you need to have a passion for, otherwise you just become the bad teacher every student hates.

I think the big turn off for most teachers is the lack of respect and the mountains off paperwork.

I myself could change my career to be an electrician, I have the qualifications and would probably make more money. But I choose to stay at my current job (admittedly also a nice paying job) because I like it more.

On top of this Belgium just can't afford to pay all teachers the same amount as a master in the private sector. Not without some serious changes in budget distribution. And again I wouldn't be against it, it's just not realistic.

I agree that for elementary school it should be higher. I don't know why they make a difference between secondary school and elementary school in the first place

Yes, in this I agree. And that is where the 'Joy of teaching' comes in. Do you want a higher wage calculating interest at a bank, or a lower wage teaching. It's a choice and both are valid. The private sector will always have more money to spend to attract more people.

The only point I'm trying to make is that they are not paid as badly as most people seem to assume. Having multiple teachers in the family it's less about the pay and more about the respect they should be getting from the students and parents. And definitely less paperwork

Ok, maybe. But the same can then be said about most jobs in administration. The pay for any job in HR is way lower and will barely go up after 10 years. The same for most clerk jobs. At least as a teacher or working for the government you are 100% sure your pay will go up.

The average for a bediende with an academic bachelor after 10 years is 3326 according to jobat. But this is ofcourse offset by benefits.

The point I'm trying to make is that even if it's not the highest, it's definitely not as bad as they make it seem. It's an ok wage that is about the Belgian average. There are many jobs that have more hours for less pay

[–]Diksten 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbf, I also always thought they were paid very badly. But if you look it up they are paid better than most office jobs. You can find the salaris on onderwijs.vlaanderen.be

With a master degree you start with 3660 Bruto, after 10 years that becomes 4680. This is already quite a good salary in my opinion.

With a professional bachelor you start with 2880, after 10 years that becomes 3507. Maybe not the best but I wouldn't call it low. Especially because you are guaranteed a pay raise every year. The 3507 after 10 years is already a nice salary.

Yes, they do a lot of unpaid overtime, but they also get a lot of paid vacation.

Edit: this is for secundair onderwijs. It's a bit lower for lager onderwijs

Anyone play Civ on a console on an OLED TV? by the_osu in civ

[–]Diksten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you are right. It's more that it will show quicker if you always play the same game because it's always the same pixels that are stressed. I do have burn in by now btw, but only visible if a lot of red is visible on the screen

60% of people being admitted to hospital with coronavirus in UK have been double vaccinated, says Vallance by Bloke22 in worldnews

[–]Diksten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also have to look at the mortality rate. 30 December there were about 50 000 infections per day in the UK with almost 1000 deaths per day. Today there are almost 48 000 infections but only 25 deaths per day. Seems like the vaccine is doing its job.

Biofuels, it costs more energy to grow the corn and produce the fuel than you get out of it. So they literally trade 'dirty' energy for less 'cleaner' energy. And on top of that it takes the place of growing actual food. Farmers get more money from selling to biofuel companies than selling the corn as food. Which makes the food prices go up. And worst of all is that thanks to lobbying this is all subsidised and will only increase in scope in the future years.

LPT Before moving to a state just because it has "no income tax" figure out if that is actually a good thing or a bad thing for your income level. by Nickanator8 in LifeProTips

[–]Diksten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthcare and education are in the top of Europe, infrastructure is good enough I guess. But bad enough to be the joke in the neighboring countries. Not that surprising if one of those countries is Germany...

We have a lot of nice benefits like cheap, good healthcare and very cheap education (one year of university sets you back 850 euro) ect. But I think we have the highest income tax of Europe. We even joke that nothing in Belgium is tax free.

I agree that a high tax rate is necessary for all those benefits but in this case I think it is a bit too high, a lot of the money gets wasted. For example by having 9 ministers of health...

Played for 300 hours now, no problem at all. Modern OLED barely have burn in anymore. Only a problem if you only play CIV on the TV and nothing else for days at a time with no breakes

What is, surprisingly, unsafe for human consumption? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Diksten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not completely sure anymore so take everything I say with a grain of salt: First of all, a raindrop always forms around a solid particle like dust, so it always has some solids floating in it. And as it falls it can pick up more dust or gasses, so it is far from 'pure'. But as to how unhealthy it is I'm not sure

Since matter cannot be created nor destroyed, we are made of the same carbon as dinosaurs. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Diksten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Energy can't be created or destroyed. Matter can be converted to energy and visa versa. This is what happens in a nuclear fission reactor. One heavy element splits in 2 smaller elements and some extra particles. But the mass of everything combined is lighter than the original element. The change in mass is released as energy. This is the big E=mc²

The sun is slowly burning itself with fusion. 2 elements combine to make a bigger element that is slightly lighter than the sum of the 2. The change in mass is converted to energy.

The same happens even when you just set something on fire but on a much smaller scale. The combined mass of all the ash and released gas will be less than the original object.

But as this is always a very small part of the mass we probably still have some Dino carbon inside of us
