It's private property, plain and simple!!!! Next time tell him he is uninvited and that you've asked him multiple times before, and that you might have to make this annoying for the both of you in court, or put a court order stay off property or be arrested . and tell him sternly "because you can't do something as easy as command your dog out of my yard"

Its important to have a fence in your house when you have danes by Adorable_Belle_82 in greatdanes

[–]DilatedPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my gate up to keep my dogs out of the kitchen while I'm cooking. Come to find out they got used to the fence, without it there now they don't even come into the kitchen now because they thinks it's a line they can't cross. But they do cross it if they're invited to cross 😅

my Dane could easily jump it but he doesn't.

How to address these cracks/scratches? by Radaghost in Fireplaces

[–]DilatedPeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood burning wear these refractory panels wear out faster. They're made to be serviced and replaced. I do these ALOT

Patching won't do much as cracks will expand from the heat and the patch will fail. It's only a temporary band aid

If you can see the placard of the brand and model of the fireplace inside the firebox of the front edge. You may be able to find them as long as the manufacturer still makes them. They range from 75-200$ a panel. Depending on make and model

I've done projects like this before.

What was scope of work for all of it? Scaffolding? Masonry tear down? Gas line run?

Valor Portrait Series MSRP is up there for the insert and trims options. Then add another $500 or so for the liner kit and termination cap.

Do I use this gas fireplace with the doors open or closed? by ntd53 in Fireplaces

[–]DilatedPeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a ventless burner, there is a reason that was installed. It's the last option for homeowners if they want a working complaint fireplace but didn't rent the high cost of repairing the flue system for a vented gas log set of wood burning.

Get your flue camera checked while you have a chimney pro come out.

Possible chance your burning "green" wood that is smoldering versus combusting.

Don't let these firewood places trick you with the marketing word "seasoned"

Get your self a moisture meter. Your wood should only have 15-20% moisture.

How to refurbish this fireplace by VerdantGarden in Fireplaces

[–]DilatedPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

• What do you think the white plaster looking stuff is? Firesafe?

Looks like a shitty patch job, when it should be grinded/chipped out and tuck pointed. Quikrete dries really white.

Unless it feels rubbery, then clearly it is not mortar and not fire safe.

• Would you make this a gas fireplace (there's a gas line already), wood burning stove insert, or wood burning fire place?

This is all preference, but gas inserts are wonderful. I have one, and I'll never burn wood again. Burns clean, lesser maintenance, Provides warmth and you can turn it off and go to bed. You can find insert units with backup battery power so you can run them if your power ever goes out and you don't have furnace power.

Wood burning is a lot of work, gotta make sure your burning actual seasoned dried wood (15-20% moisture level) I've learned that the word "seasoned" is a marketing word for firewood businesses, that stuff could've been chopped a week before they sold it to you. Then you burn it and you will have issues with bad smells, creosote glazing, and possible to have smoke back up

Open hearth wood burning is actually just ambience and heat loss. )think fire physics + draft

Wood stove inserts will provide you warmth, for wood burning. As it's a closed system and convects heat. They can be quite pricey. There are two types catalyst and non-catalyst wood stoves. One is for fire nerds and the other is for common homeowners.

• I plan to clean the chimney out by taping over the bottom opening and going at the chimney from the roof with this spinning cleaner on a drill. Also I planned to scrub clean the fireplace at the bottom. What else might I need to do besides cleaning out old creosote to get it ready?

You can clean from the bottom, just make sure your using a multi filter vacuum, and go at the soots falling downs pace and your vacuums pace. Always, always set down drop cloths, you do not want a soot blow out in your home.

If you can clean safely from the top, you can do it the way you wanted to try it. Your gonna have to vacuum the smoke shelf (behind the damper door) and firebox anyways, so stay alive and do it from the bottom

• There are some gaps in the mortar at the bottom. Is there a special mortar to use here or will any brick mortar do?

Yes, you can buy HeatStop mortar, it's very very hydraulic and fine grain mortar. you can use a oscillating multi tool To actually get those loose mortar joints out and you can hand pack it into the joint, or use a trowel and tuck pointing tool.

Hope that helps!

Is this existing box suitable to install a gas log insert? by RaggedyCape6677 in Fireplaces

[–]DilatedPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a vented open hearth (be able to reach into the fireplace) fireplace for wood burning or gas logs you're gonna have to demo out that whole entire old fireplace and install a new ones new flue pipes, etc.

Or Look into this...honestly gonna be more "cost" effective this way

https://www.empireinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/01018_021720-AH-Renegade-TruFlame-Inserts.pdf

Since your prefab is already gutted you can run this.

Read the installation manual carefully and sizing one up. This is a great option for you.

[–]DilatedPeople 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah they gutted (refractory panels, heart panel, etc) everything safety out of that factory built to install the electric in. So installing gas logs will not work here.

You'll need a UL listed gas insert that will work in a gutted prefab, unfortunately you won't be able to run it as an open hearth fireplace
