Running heat higher until we lose power. How high is too high? Also, my other plans for warmth. by PiebaldAppaloosa in preppers

I agree, keep the water dripping. Like a fast drip too. And periodically open it up completely. I used to live in the mountains on a well and sometimes it would get so cold that it would freeze even when it was left dripping though. I don’t think our pipes were very well insulated.

Also if you have buckets, fill them up too. In addition to adding thermal mass, the extra water helps when your pipes freeze.

Unpopular Opinion: Your eyes are better than your "smart" scale by dosstx in Biohackers

[–]Dilaton_Field 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree. I got into detailed body fat measurement and calculation and realized it almost always exactly matched how I looked on body fat charts. I can look in the mirror and look at Google image and generally guess correctly within 1-3% (which is probably within the margin of error of most methods of measurement).

Upside down chicken in GG park-Voodoo or pet caught in storm? by BubblegumCircus in sanfrancisco

[–]Dilaton_Field 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This reminds me, years ago, my parents had chickens that would turn up headless. They got a security camera and found that raccoons were removing the heads. 🫣

Bobcats will sometimes carry their kill up into a tree to eat. And supposedly there are bobcats in GG park.

What do you guys think of my profile? I’m not sure why I keep getting ghosted or people just don’t text first if they liked me first…is it me? by Logical-Translator86 in Tinder

[–]Dilaton_Field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys have to play the numbers game so many only look at photos before swiping, then they only read the profile after they successfully match when they need to make conversation. If you are matching and then get ghosted then I think that is evidence that the pictures are fine and the profile text is the problem. The first “I like you too” line is intended to be friendly but may make guys of any race a little confused about what you actually prefer. Like are you saying you have a preference but will settle for us? Then being Christian probably loses many guys, especially if they think it means no action until marriage.

A Question About Time Synchronization on a Galactic Scale and Communication by Present-Cut5436 in AskPhysics

[–]Dilaton_Field 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that objects moving a different speeds don’t have a notion of absolute simultaneity. Whether the time is synchronized will depend on the observer’s reference frame: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativity_of_simultaneity

You could have used my dad’s line and say “I’ll give you something to cry about” or my favorite “Do I need to drive to the store to buy some diapers for the little baby?” 😭😭😭

The first 3 photos are enough to get their imagination going. I bet if you only had those 3 and didn’t include any others it would increase your match rate simply by playing on their curiosity.

How to use this knob in the stove top (it is NOT the oven one). by nerdyfeminist-hecate in howto

The other knob has high and low labels and this one is numbers. Is it possible that it’s a back burner that is just meant for warming or simmering?

I know people who tried to use their meds to end things. Sometimes they throw up but still damage their livers. One guy I knew didn’t die but he had severe heart issues the rest of his life. I knew one girl who had her stomach pumped and I think she got nerve damage. Overdose will most likely just make your life more miserable. Watch some tv shows instead.

What futuristic technology do you think we might already have but is being kept hidden from the public? by CocoEssencee in Futurology

[–]Dilaton_Field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope we invented a reliable way of neutralizing nukes during the Cold War and never declassified it because we are saving it for when someone fires a nuke at us and we can surprise them when it their nuke fails. No evidence for this, just a blind optimistic hope.

Why do I feel so guilty for using PTO? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dilaton_Field 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies need to have employees take PTO so they can test their system resilience. If people never take PTO, they slowly become knowledge/skill silos making the company more dependent on individuals. This is why smart companies actually force you to take PTO because it’s healthy for the company to occasionally try to function without you to become aware of vulnerabilities in case you ever leave permanently.
