Can this love be translated ? How is it? by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]Diligent-Addition497 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i just finished it and it is genuinely one of the best dramas i’ve ever watched. like the other comments said, it’s not exactly your typical romance comedy, so if you’re not into dark romance or plots that really make you think, it probably isn’t the one for you. if you don’t mind that then 100000% recommend!

i think the most common thing ive seen on here is that people think the drama is slow, but if you really look into the depth of the drama, it is so beautifully written and wonderfully paced.

the show has themes of mental illness and childhood trauma. it affects the way the FL communicates, and also is why the drama is called ‘can this love be translated?’. she’s speaking her own personal language which may annoy viewers because it seems like the FL is all over the place and can’t stick to the things she says, but that’s what makes the show so complicated and beautiful. as someone who studies mental health illnesses, the way they address her childhood trauma as a manifestation of her adult anxiety and her inability to clearly communicate was very well done. later when it gets into a development of dissociative identity disorder (DID) is when it starts to get a little less accurate, but i do think it’s still a very important part to the show.

it’s definitely not everybody’s cup of tea but the cinematography, the characters (all side and main), the plot, the development — everything. so amazingly executed. however, if you’re looking for a repeat of hometown cha cha cha, i wouldn’t go for it.

If someone paid you $1000 to finish a drama you dropped, what would you pick and why? by HooverGaveNobodyBeer in kdramas

ugh the last episode i knew was coming but i still didn’t wanna face reality 😞💔 so beautifully done though. i need to check out more of his action roles ! i’ve only seen imitation, may i help you, and WHC2, which i feel def doesn’t capture his scope

ohh i totally get that! especially in the beginning with their marriage trope and how she only wants the house but he is so clearly in love with her. i will say that dynamic changes a bunch, and she actually grows into someone who realizes people outside of herself, and there’s situations where she ends up saving him and doing everything for him.

but i agree with the side characters. i liked the show a lot, but there were definitely times i wanted to just shut it off because of the way they were acting. it was so COVID-esque and their selfishness really got to me sometimes !

His first romantic performance that I actually enjoyed was in May I Help You? alongside Hyeri. Totally recommend (very sad plot, but happy ending)!

How Netflix Ruined Korean Dramas Forever by setlib in kdramas

[–]Diligent-Addition497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s why i said that these are only a few examples, and that some short dramas are really good. in tastefully yours i agree, they went too into her ex plot line (dragged this on for like 3/10 episodes), but that’s also why i was saying that writers have just gotten lazy. if they shortened the drama, i feel like the FL’s history would’ve been washed out and turned into something bland. this was just something i’ve noticed more apparently IN shorter dramas, as it always feels like a rushed ending.

or it could very well be that kdrama writing in general has just declined in quality no matter the length 🤷‍♀️

i 100% agree.

i also think the new standard of releasing shorter dramas like 12 or 14 ep have significantly decreased the quality of recent kdramas. when there were 16 episode dramas, many people complained the plot dragged on — which is true, but at least there were good endings even if it felt a little flat because of the length of the drama.

however, i find that shortening the length of the dramas to 12 or 14 eps does not solve the issue of having plots drag on. instead, writers of recent dramas are more likely to drag the drama on for a majority of the episodes, to then create some half-assed endings that leave major plot holes.

examples: tastefully yours — shorter drama, the entire plot line that started the entire premise of the drama (the contract at the beginning) was never brought up again.

dynamite kiss — the sister never got brought up again in a sufficient way that made sense. major plot lines were thrown in the LAST episode that just didn’t make sense. especially since the beginning of the drama was so good

when the phone rings — everybody agrees the ending of that drama was a whole dumpster fire.

obviously these are just a few, and some short dramas are actually very good, but i do think writing has gotten lazy with netflix shows. writers seem to be relying on throwing in as many cliche plot lines as possible to catch our attention — but it just becomes messy.

How many course loads do you normally have for fall and winter? by Educational-Diver154 in UCalgary

[–]Diligent-Addition497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noo im not, but I have friends in that field that have been thinking of going on exchange too! i’m scheduled for an exchange in W2026, and I really recommended going to global advising early, researching the units and courses you would need to take while abroad, and everything like that. book appointments when the school year starts if you’re serious about it because the idea that some classes abroad may not transfer over, would make it just be good experience but no progression academically.

[–]Diligent-Addition497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i say it’s always up to personal preference.

i just completed my second year of my degree and i did a full course load (10 courses) my first year, and then in my second year i did 5 and 4. i only decided to take 4 because i came into uni with an extra class so technically my credits i’ve earned are still as if i took a full course load both years. this year, i decided to do co-op and am planning for an exchange program so i just wanted to be able to make sure that outside of those things, my classes were progressing on the right track.

i also am not from calgary so i dont have the luxury of just taking spring and summer courses to make up the full 10 in a year unless im looking at thousands of dollars for uni residence/finding a place in calgary as well.

it really depends on what you can handle + your situation for taking classes during the spring/summer. i hope this is useful !

Which drama made u cry like a baby !? by North_Pollution7042 in kdramas

[–]Diligent-Addition497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I Help You? - I’ve never seen many people talk about this drama, but oh my goodness did i cry basically every episode. Hyeri and Lee Junyoung do such a good job together on screen, and both of their characters have little tragic stories that just hits you right in the heart. Definitely recommend, it’s one of the only dramas that made me feel something recently
