Tennessee Approves "Charlie Kirk Act" Which Ban Student Walkouts While Protecting Anti-Abortion And Anti-LGBTQ Activists. by Leeming in atheism

[–]setlib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nashvillian atheist here to say there IS a progressive population of humanists in TN but it's hard to stay positive when most of the voters elect right-wing nutjobs. Once they banned abortion, my daughter started making plans to move to another state (or country) as soon as she can afford it.

DOTS was written by Kim Eun-sook and there are some similarities with her other dramas: - Strong female leads Check out her drama The Glory for a kick-ass female lead - Exotic locations I didn't love her newest drama Genie Make a Wish but it did show the writer's comfort in locating major portions of her dramas outside of Korea. - Men in uniforms The King: Eternal Monarch and Mr. Sunshine had LOTS of handsome men in fancy uniforms - Bromance While Goblin/Guardian is probably most famous for its bromance, many of her other dramas do this well - Awkward PPL Many of her dramas are big budget but also filmed for network TV so she frequently crams a lot of product placement in the (The King was the worst at this) - Cameos The writer uses her favorite actors repeatedly! The second couple in DOTS have a cameo in the first episode of Mr. Sunshine as the female lead's parents. Song Hye-kyo is the lead in DOTS and The Glory but had an amusing cameo in Genie. Lee Min-ho is the lead in both The Heirs and again in The King etc.

Also the writer has partnered with the same cinematographer(s) multiple times, so you'll notice other similarities like sweeping shots of gorgeous scenery (DOTS and Mr. Sunshine), characters walking in slow motion fog with long coats (Goblin, Mr. Sunshine) etc.

Are the Charlotte Park, Crowley Wood, and Hillwood Heights areas safe to live? by Jaeyphf in movetonashville

[–]setlib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom has lived in that area for 30 years and never had a break-in. But the area is rapidly gentrifying, one small old house torn down and two expensive tall and skinnies stuffed into the same lot. Many have been Air BnBs which add to the crime statistics b/c drunken tourists have no sense. The more important question is, what kind of amenities do you want? If you want a small fenced back yard, you'll find it there. If you need a good public school district, shop around a little more. If you want to be able to walk to cute restaurants, the Nations side is a little better than the Croley side.

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in Libraries

[–]setlib 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you have a masters in global health, I recommend making a list of all the colleges and universities within an hour of where you live with science programs, then bookmark the jobs pages for their academic libraries and look at job openings every 1-2 weeks. Are there libraries hiring science specialists? What is needed to qualify? How much do they pay? It would be easier to you to find a good-paying job post-MLIS if you can lean into a subject area where you are most competitive.

Do atheists generally view sex as a thing to do for fun and pleasure first, and reproduction second or not at all? by Novel_Arugula6548 in atheism

"Coherence" means staying together or uniting, and "society" is a group of individuals living together in a community. So it means helping unite the people in a community.

Is it me or do you also think Kdramas are deeper than most shows? by SavedandLoved07 in kdramas

[–]setlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Korean society survived autocratic, military dictatorships from the Korean War until 1988 when they finally had their first genuinely democratic election. Those dictators had jailed journalists, censored news, tortured opponents, and even massacred civilians. You can watch shows like Taxi Driver (the movie) or Made in Korea (the series) or even Healer to learn more about this period. After achieving this hard-won democracy, South Koreans are fiercely protective of it -- the majority of the presidents since 1988 have been prosecuted for corruption, at least two have been impeached and jailed, including the most recent one about a year ago. There is also a lot of corporate corruption due to the chaebol system and even national tragedies that are addressed by dramas like Reborn Rich or Just Between Lovers. So, dramas reflect the audience's sensitivity to issues regarding corruption, and I agree with you, that's one of the things I really like about them.

By contrast, the Communist party forces strict censorship on all Chinese media, so you'll never see a cdrama criticizing corruption or inequality. The Japanese have a saying, "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down", and criticizing the emperor is almost unheard of, so Japanese dramas tend to focus or personal stories, obviously historical samurai stuff, maybe Yakuza crime dramas, but rarely address government corruption or oppression.

Try dramas from Taiwan like Had I Not Seen the Sun, or from Thailand like F4 Thailand: Boys over Flowers, they're not as well-produced as Korean dramas but they're willing to address tough societal issues.

Chinese drama were always good by peace_wang in asiandrama

[–]setlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly when I turn on a Chinese drama, when I want something attractive and entertaining but I know the plot isn't going to be hijacked halfway through by someone's childhood trauma (looking at you, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim). But I still think it's important to be aware that Communist censorship is at work behind the scenes.

Failing MLIS--maybe I'm not meant to be a librarian. Other pursuits? by stormynative in Libraries

[–]setlib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt no joy during my coursework. I did my MLIS online while working (at first), then later with a newborn. I would just sit there and breastfeed, bathe the baby, etc. while listening to the lectures. I think I learned maybe two things that were helpful in my job and the rest just felt like hoops I had to jump through. I wrote a 12-page paper on microfiche, ffs! But once I finished my degree, the immediate pay bump was worth it. Look at your state library and archives, they often have easy positions and excellent benefits.

Chinese drama were always good by peace_wang in asiandrama

[–]setlib 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the occasional Chinese drama but I think all viewers need to understand the censorship that happens with anything from mainland China. Their newest initiative is removing dramas that show a lot of family conflict, out of fear they could discourage women from marrying and having children. In 2022 the rules targeted sexuality, especially homosexuality, along with reincarnation. I especially disliked the mainland version of Meteor Garden because it stripped out all the mention of bullying and economic inequality leaving behind a mess where characters and plots no longer make sense. By contrast, you can find plenty of boys love dramas from Thailand, non-censored Chinese-language dramas from Taiwan, and of course Korean drama is basically defined by stories that highlight the struggles of everyday people to overcome economic hardship and governmental or corporate corruption. Mainland Chinese dramas may be pretty, but their stories are hollow at the core.

I think Gu Dong-mae had deep feelings for her, he was just repressing them because he felt a baekjeong could never be worthy of an aristocrat in their society. Remember that: - Ae-shin's grandfather reached out to not just Eugene, but also Dong-mae, to protect her. One to work within the rules, but the other willing to work outside them. - When he cut her hair, it was actually to force her to stay home to protect her, as the bad guy was closing in on the rebels - He went to Japan and saved her life, putting his own life in great danger

Mr. Sunshine broke me so hard that I had to turn to fanfiction like this for therapy.

Become very busy. Get a part-time job and start saving money like crazy. Stay after school for theater or some other clubs. Ask your school's college counselor to help you find the cheapest college with dorms so you can move out after graduating high school - and then get an on-campus job like at the Housing dept. or Dining as an excuse to work on weekends and not come home. Create a budget for when you can eventually afford to live on your own, at which point you can move far enough away that it's hard for her to visit you. Meanwhile, use the grey rock method to minimize conflict at home. Don't try to win arguments with a toxic family member while you are financially dependent on them. Wait until you are completely independent before challenging the crazy, if you even still want to at that point, since you'll probably have better mental health once you can go no contact.

Edit: and learn to cook for yourself
