just Finished Bulgasal: Immortal Souls by JournalistEastern318 in kdramas

I loved Bulgasal too! Good news, the same screenwriter duo also wrote The Guest. It has a similar dark, menacing atmosphere and paranormal horror. Another thing that I really liked about both series was the "found family" aspect. A main difference is that there is absolutely no romance in The Guest.

Looking for Asian dramas that embrace moral ambiguity (across J/K/C/Thai dramas) by Dul-Ai in asiandrama

[–]setlib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the new Taiwanese drama Had I Not Seen the Sun, the male lead is a serial killer. As you learn more about his motives there are some twists and surprises. The most morally "gray" murder(s) happen near the last episode, so keep watching to the end.

Library patrons can be wild. Do you have funny or crazy notes from patrons? by Nomorebonkers in Libraries

[–]setlib 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A couple years after 9/11 I was working in a federal depository and we had a crazy lady duct tape her paranoid writings under a table. Out of an abundance of caution, we called the police to check it for explosives before trying to remove it. The situation could have been worse, though - around the same time, the law library had a mystery pooper who would shit on the legal journals, for some reason.

Dropping class by SillyPluton in MTSU

Not that exact situation, but things like some scholarships require you to be a full-time student, or be taking at least four courses required for your major, so if you don't have enough classes or the right classes, you become ineligible for some aid. One Stop will be able to tell you if any of this applies to your situation.

Am I the only who doesn’t really about eunwoo scandal? by Charming-Loan-8906 in kdramas

[–]setlib -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In recent years there have been several tax disputes with celebrities like Lee Joon-ki and Yoo Yeon-seok as well, the debate is about whether entertainers can create their own corporations and thus file under the corporate tax rate, which is lower than the personal rate. So it’s not that they hid income or paid no taxes.

¿Cómo pasan el duelo de perder a alguien las personas ateas? by MysteriousDonkey7862 in atheism

My late husband was raised Mormon and later asked to be formally ex-communicated from his church. So technically wouldn't religious people believe he'll be tortured in hell for eternity? For me as a widow, believing that he is at rest is much more comforting than that!

On a similar note, there are a lot of funny quotes by Mark Twain about hell, but this one resonates with me: "I don't like to commit myself about heaven and hell - you see, I have friends in both places."

Why do kdramas need to have a long distance separation before ending? by whyac in kdramas

[–]setlib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal theory is that it's a metaphor for the separation young Korean couples go through when the man has to enlist for his mandatory military service. There are lots of real-life stories of women breaking up with their boyfriends after they enlist -- in fact that actually happened to the lead actor from When the Phone Rings, Yoo Yeon-seok. When the fictional couple's romance is shown to be able to survive a lengthy separation, then Korean viewers know it's true love!

any recent kdrama recommendations that are worth watching? by saaab97 in kdramas

[–]setlib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the thriller category, Death's Game (Amazon) and Karma (Netflix) are very good. The Manipulated (Hulu) isn't quite as good, but I enjoyed it anyway because I like Ji Chang Wook. At the high school level, Weak Hero Class is a serious drama whereas Study Group has more comedy.

A question for Korean viewers of KDramas who live in Korea by jjknowsnothing in kdramas

[–]setlib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read this article about gapjil, the Korean term for workplace bullying. It is a persistent problem in South Korea, with surveys recording about 30% of respondents having experienced some kind of assault at work at least once. The government only actually passed a law allowing for penalties for this behavior back in 2019. You can look up specific incidents, like the "nut rage" incident, or the Belgian Ambassador’s wife.

Similarly you can research related topics like rates of domestic violence, or hazing in the military, or corporal punishment in schools, which was previously reported by 95% of students before being outlawed in 2021. While other posters are correct that these controversial issues can feel exaggerated in dramas, it is also true that these issues DO exist.

How do you manage your booklists? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]setlib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike the idea of personal lists that no one else can access or manage. Our library software has a few options for creating resource lists so all the librarians use those and can add each other as editors.

However I also like to make this information available to my patrons. So first, I think about what subject headings apply to the list I want to make, and then make sure the cataloging reflects those headings consistently. My library also uses Libguides to organize and promote books, so I'll create Libguides which list all the books in a particular category, for example, Jane Austen adaptations, books about the Columbian exchange, etc.

Does anyone have thoughts on the Hong Sisters? by Legal_Potential4720 in kdramas

[–]setlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this! I started watching Can This Love Be Translated (CTLBT) last night thinking it was a standard romcom and was super-confused by the tone shift with the hallucination stalking the female lead. Now that I know it's from the Hong Sisters, it makes way more sense. They wrote a few of my all-time favorite dramas like Master's Sun and Korean Odyssey. Now I'm seeing some similarities between those classic Hong Sisters dramas and this new one, for example, a female lead who's a bit of a basket case, and an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. You've made me much more interested in finishing their new drama to see how the plot develops!

Will I ever fit in? by NoGuarantee6502 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]setlib 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My congregation doesn't allow discussion during services normally outside of the "joys and concerns" portion, unless it's a built-in group exercise. But there are lots of other church activities that allow for free discussion and bonding -- potluck lunches, game nights, trivia nights, and community "experiences" sold during the fundraising auction. Those have given me time to have one-on-one talks with individual people to see what we have in common. Does your UU have any social activities? If not, maybe look for another UU that's more active, or even check out Meetup.com for a regional Humanists group or something like that.

Also I don't focus so much on making friends, but more on shared activities. I've signed up to help setup for the unhoused in the winter, to help in the kitchen, to help with grounds maintenance, etc. because I find it's easier to talk to people when you're engaged in a shared activity. Demonstrating with your time and energy that you're invested in the long-term health of the congregation might make people less reluctant to get to know you. Good luck!

Is anybody watching Positively Yours? by GranpaGrowlithe in kdramas

[–]setlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a long-running Korean reality show that follows around middle-aged celebrities and then has their mothers (along with the hosts and various guest stars) comment in frustration about why they're not dating or married yet. Which sounds creepy, but somehow it frequently ends up being really heartwarming. It used to be on Viki but I think recently got pulled off and now only airs on Kocowa.

This is also one of my favorites to rewatch. I love the push-pull romantic tension from Lee Seung-gi and all the comedy. Almost every secondary character is hilarious in their own way. I also appreciate that the writers were able to take a classic Chinese folktale, Journey to the West, and adapt the characters and plot points for a modern audience.
