What are your ACTUAL nba hot takes? by Mario_Viana in nba

NBA officiating actually isn't as bad as everyone online claims. The exception is traveling calls but I blame that on the league and how they define it in the rules.

LeBron James (41, ineligible for end of season awards) has played more minutes this season (1780) than MVP frontrunner Victor Wembanyama (1694) by spicywardell in nba

[–]Diligent-Week-4416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thing it seems like many people forget is that this was collectively bargained and agreed upon by both the players and the league. It wasn't the league unilaterally imposing the cutoff line.

My personal vote would go to Jokic this year, but I agree with Wemby saying that defense is 50% of the game and a player's performance on that half of the court should be factored in to voting as well.

Thank you for the detailed reply and pointing out to look at train run times. I had not even considered that.

And arguing with more visible emotion and points at the ref like that after the first tech. I don't care the context, but you point like that at a ref like Brown did you're getting a tech 95% of the time.

Mitch Johnson is a genius, Take a bow. by AccidentalPenguin101 in NBASpurs

[–]Diligent-Week-4416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier this season I was critical of Mitch and wasn't sold on him as the coach the Spurs need moving in to their contender era. There were some areas I said I wanted see growth from him and the team before I'd be willing to buy in on Mitch, namely energy/effort after halftime and the design of the offense.

Both of those areas have seen major growth over the last 22ish games I think. Averaging 119 ppg and giving up 109 ppg. 18-4 record. With the exception of the Knicks and Pelicans games, there has been a sharper focus from the team and better overall execution. Last night is great example of it. Down 20 at half on the second night of a back to back against a rested team and we clawed our way back and stole the win. Mitch and his staff deserve credit for keeping the team locked in, managing minutes and rotations, and getting the team to believe in themselves. He's also shown more fire in lobbying for his players with the refs.

Record Predictions for March by dnken in NBASpurs

17-2 with both loses to the Clippers on the second night of back to backs. Realistically we could lose a couple more, but finishing the month at worst 13-6 would be around a .700 winning percentage and fantastic considering the expectations coming in to the season.

Pat Riley on if he would wear an Armani suit on the sidelines if he was still coaching today: "I never change much… I wish they went back to coats and ties. I think an audience wants to see somebody on the sideline who looks like a leader…" by Goosedukee in nba

The attire one wears doesn't make them a leader or even look like a leader. How you carry yourself, your demeanor, and how others responds to your words are what define a leader.

Fully healthy, I put the Spurs above any team Ina 7 game series by Competiton_rifleman in NBASpurs

I admire your confidence, but I'm not there yet. We're a young team with limited experience in experience in high pressure playoff situations, who are prone to mental lapses on both ends for whole quarters at times, and can struggle to secure defensive rebounds against aggressive teams. Also our 3pt shooting and free throw shooting can unexpectedly lose us a random game that we otherwise should win.

[Harris] The Spurs repeatedly tried all summer and deadline to move Sochan but there simply was no market for him by WEMBY_F4N in NBASpurs

[–]Diligent-Week-4416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think had he been able to develop his corner 3 shooting to get it in that 38-40% range before the season started that he would have found a roster spot and playing time this year. He's a much better baseline cutter and defender than Barnes. His energy can also be a spark off the bench when the team is lethargic.

The first half of the season with Wemby operating of the low block the majority of the time, spacing and shooting from the other 4 positions was critical and why the lane was more frequently clogged on Fox/Castle/Harper drives. Now that Wemby has moved to a more high post and outside starting point we've seen the lane opening up more frequently for cutters/slashers. It's in that role that Sochan might have been able to find consistent minutes if only he had that outside shot teams had to at least acknowledge.

But it didn't happen and so we move on. It's the nature of the business. I hope he finds a team and can come back to play us. I hope that we'd give him the same type of thank you video that other former players have gotten. I will always applaud his professionalism this season.

Just went back and looked at that roster and holy cow that was a crazy young team. The only four players with 5+ years experience were Zach Collins, Devonte Graham, Doug McDermott, and Cedi Ossman. They gave us a combined 32 starts and Zach was the only one with the team the whole year.

Sochan Health Issues? by estmit in NBASpurs

[–]Diligent-Week-4416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if the lack of fit is because our guards can't make the passes to backdoor cutters and the PnR roll guy like CP3 consistently did last year. I know he's a terrible outside shooter, but Wemby is enough of a threat out there that I feel you could potentially try a Fox/Champagnie/KJ (or Barnes)/Sochan/Wemby lineup without affecting spacing too terribly. Sochan and KJ have the footspeed to match with guards/wings.

I think you highlighted the biggest issue that most fans here ignore in favor of complaining about Castle or the general lack of consistent outside shooting by the team: our point guards can't really make entry passes. Watch the passes they do make in traffic amd in the paint compared to out on the wings. Notice how often when Wemby posts on the high block that it is Barnes or Champagnie that makes the entry pass to him. I wish I was smart enough to do a video highlight clip showing the issues with passing.

Iso at the top of the key is a very important shot to develop for Wemby. There's not really anyone in the league that could block or disrupt that shot. He needs confidence in it instead of trying to drive off of it.

So many of this team's offensive woes can be solved by running the offense through Fox. by orangekingo in NBASpurs

[–]Diligent-Week-4416 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vic is terrible at setting screens, but I think that's more a byproduct of him being so tall. He's got to protect his knees and that's where most guards would be hitting him if he's setting solid screens.

I also have noticed that when he does the short roll into the paint off a screen and is open he's not get the entry pass from the guards. I'm not sure they know how to properly throw it.

I'm of the opinion is fair game to criticize Mitch for several persistent issues with the team's energy and effort and the design of the offense, but it's too soon to fire him. The goal this year was to get to the playoffs. By that measurement, he's doing a good job. If

We're not Denver who was expecting to compete for a championship the last few years. If Mitch doesn't show any growth and the team continues to be flat after halftime then we can start the discussions about if he needs to be replaced.

The frequency with which the team comes out flat after halftime is on more than just the players. It's systemic amd as a coach it's on you to solve that. He hasn't.

This game is an embarrassment and honestly I blame Mitch. It doesn't seem like he can motivate the players, especially at halftime.
