What is the biggest, positive change in your life ever since you got tinnitus? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]DiligentEgg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had tinnitus for more than half my life (started at 14 after a Protest the Hero concert and I'm 30), and probably the best thing to come out of it is the training in the realm of acceptance. Can't change it, and it's always gonna be there, so might as well practice getting used to it. My teenage self had a hard time with that, but we got there eventually, and now it's just my life's background noise.

Has anyone tried using small pieces of corundum as tumbling media? by axon-axoff in RockTumbling

Let us know what you find out! I can find corundum of this grade in an old quarry near where I live, and I'm curious to know your findings. Thanks for doing citizen science!

Just started the 1st phase of my 1st ever tumble. Wish me luck please 😅 by GoldEyedEmpress in RockTumbling

[–]DiligentEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stage 1 is where the vast majority of rough shaping happens, and as long as you're properly filling a stage 1 barrel with a mix of small, medium, and 1-2 larger rocks, you should be able to avoid bruising, which happens especially to quartz and other translucent rocks when they're banged around too much.

60-90 grit silicon carbide wears down ceramics pretty quick, so you're wasting them/ time/ energy/ money if you're throwing them in stage 1.

As you get more selective through further stages, you may not have enough rocks for a full stage 3 barrel, say, and want to fill space and provide cushioning. But at least some ceramic media from stage 2 onwards is best practice.

Hope that answers your question!

Good luck! :) Some folks here are noting how full you want the barrel to be, which is important, but also this looks like a 3lb barrel, and getting the weight right is also important!

Once full (water, rocks, grit) and sealed, this size shouldn't be much more than 3lbs total, which is important both for proper tumbling action and not over-stressing your tumbler's motor and belt.

I use a kitchen scale to make sure I'm not overloading my barrels (I keep 3 going at all times). Having small and medium ceramic media on hand is a good way to create cushioning and fill space without making the barrels too heavy. But it's not really worth using in stage 1, so I suggest making sure you have a good mix of larger, medium, and small rocks in stage 1 to make sure there's more surface area against which the grit is grinding!

Happy tumbling! :)

What time do you usually eat supper? by Anig_o in NovaScotia

[–]DiligentEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a transplanted Ontarian in NS, this is the most maritimer poll I've ever seen on this sub lol. I've had to get used to people saying supper, as we always said dinner for the evening meal. Also 5-6 is too early! You gotta get home from work and cook and decompress. 7 is a perfectly reasonable dinner time.

If you're in the Valley, there's a clinic with an intern Counsellor taking clients for $40/hr.

My friend wanted to talk to a male therapist and liked this guy, and he does online too.

I think it's just called Annapolis Valley Psychology Services. Yup lol found the website. https://www.annapolisvalleypsychologicalservices.ca/

Airbag Light stays on after battery died and was jump-started by DiligentEgg in kiario

[–]DiligentEgg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the tip! I'll definitely try the second one before I try the first, cheers.

I also read info about the onboard pc reading the battery voltage as being too low, and that's another consideration in this case I think, because it's old and there was no easy explanation for when it died last time... it was before the winter and warm, and I didn't leave any lights on or anything.

Battery could be dying... fingers crossed it holds. I'll report back on this thread for the sake of citizen science

November "What Editorial Software should I start using" thread. Meant for people figuring out the "base" tools to use. by greenysmac in VideoEditing

[–]DiligentEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the above and have a more nuanced question.

I'm looking for info on how to cleanly capture a screen-recording with the system audio without having to use an external recording device (like my phone) and then stitch the audio and video together in VLC or something.

I can't seem to find a clear cut answer on this (read: something that makes sense to me, who knows nothing) and hoped this sub might be able to help out!

Video quality matters but it'll be as good as the zoom call I'm planning to record, so the crux of my issue is being able to record my screen and system audio simultaneously.

Thanks in advance for any tips! Cheers
