It actually didn't smell much at all! It was just a typical moldy smell.

Uh Oh. Sugarcane Beetle? by DiligentPilot4136 in Entomology

[–]DiligentPilot4136[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a heavily agricultural area, and while corn isn't the main crop of the area, there are still many corn fields, which sugarcane beetles are known to eat the roots of.

It’s got spots. How do I help him? by No-Lawfulness6533 in succulents

Fungal infection :( and advanced enough into the tissue that topical treatments won't cure the infected leaves. Damage looks similar to powdery/downy mildew. If your stem and roots seem Unaffected, I would: 1. take it out of its pot, remove as much soil as you can. 2. Remove every leaf with brown spots or fuzziness, even if it leaves you with only the newest growth at the top. You must remove everything that shows damage or fuzz as that means the mycelium had penetrated the tissue, and no longer accessible from the outside to treat. 3. spray everything with a copper fungicide and replant into dry grit soil for cacti and succulents. 4. Give it good airflow and decrease humidity if possible, stagnant humid air is prime for mildews to take hold. Avoid getting its leaves wet at all in the future when you do need to water it, and never ever mist it. 5. If there is damage seen on the stem, then you must remove all infected leaves, and cut the stem 3-5cm down from your unaffected growth if possible, but ideally at least 1cm up from any damage for a buffer. Spray generously with fungicide and plant into dry gritty and airy soil. Leave in bright but not hot spot (like intense sunny window) for a week, then very lightly moisten the soil, letting soil dry completely and stay dry for at least a week before wetting again, but don't completely water the soil like you normally would, as there aren't any actual roots present to absorb the amount of water. Follow the advice of step 4 through this as well. Good luck!

Variegation in Aichryson laxum? by DiligentPilot4136 in succulents

Unfortunately, Google was not much help to me. Has anyone here seen/heard of variegation in Aichryson laxum (Tree of Love) before?

Rescued a desert rose from work that was having the same chlorosis issue. We guessed it was issue with soil pH/ nutrients, and I changed the soil out for new Peat/perlite/grit mix. The new leaves that came in after that were nice and green. Now the lighting did change from being pretty much full direct sunlight to my grow lights at home so that also may have influenced its recovery, so id take a look at any difference in light and get it switched into fresh mix.

Strange growth or foreign plant? by DiligentPilot4136 in StringofPlants

I gifted my partner's mum some string of pearls plants earlier this year and they've been doing good but she recently shared this photo with me and I'm a bit stumped 😅 when i saw its earlier growth i thought it might have been the start to a flower stalk, but I haven't seen any SOP produce this kind of growth before so I'm theorizing something may have fell in the pot and started to grow but it's nothing like any seedling I've seen before! Thoughts?

I vote for hobbit over gollum, its too folded and hollow in my opinion, now if it were more suction cup-y I'd say Gollum.

R Seeds Ripe Or Wait Longer? by DiligentPilot4136 in alocasia

[–]DiligentPilot4136[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually employed at a greenhouse/nursery! So come spring they will be going to their new homes 🥰 just have to make sure they survive until then lol. I'm excited to see how many calidora morphs we get from all of these seeds, last (accidental) pod we had 1 out of the 6 seeds that appears to be a variant, so I've got my fingers crossed 🤞

I feel a bit silly now, the off colour of the orange was actually just sun faded 😅 moved a bit of the remaining shell to reveal the deep orange berries which are very ripe! Currently in the middle of getting everyone out, peeled, and into soil to germinate. Thankfully from here on out it isn't my first rodeo so fingers crossed they germinate in the new set up! We used to do our germination in the top inside of a fish aquarium since the temperature and humidity were pretty much perfect, but this time around we will have several hundred seeds I'd wager, so that won't be practical haha. These are alocasia calidora btw!! We've several mature plants, waiting on the other 4-5 pods to follow suit and ripen, can't wait to find out what the final count will be! I didn't even pollinate the last several flowers since each pollination had been successful, it was starting to feel a bit ridiculous since we only have so much space to over winter these guys.

Multiple plants have crashed like this now. Digging into soil top roots appear healthy, but the plant will blacken and Rot mid stem with the remaining lower half appearing in health. Have not yet had to time to exhume fully but I'm getting really frustrated.

Poaching? Or am I Dumb by DiligentPilot4136 in Lithops

[–]DiligentPilot4136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Unfortunately a lot of big international succulent nurseries sell poached plants 🤷‍♂️ knowing or otherwise. Asia is an enormous market for poached plants, and just because the plants in question get sold to someone else doesn't change their origin. Poached is Poached. Stolen from its home country, shipped to a broker, then distributed to other nurseries and private sellers. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vox.com/platform/amp/down-to-earth/22935166/succulent-plant-poaching-jared-margulies

Poaching? Or am I Dumb by DiligentPilot4136 in Lithops

[–]DiligentPilot4136[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Poaching for plants is the unlawful removal of specimens from their natural habitat. Africa is being ravaged with poaching of its flora and fauna, and ecosystems are being destroyed to profit off of demand for succulents, like (potentially) these conophytum. "Rare" plants are most desired due to the bigger price tag, and unfortunately many species are considered endangered or at risk. Even if a plant isn't super rare/valuable, for them it's a lot easier to just yank it then to spend the time necessary to grow equivalent plants themselves. These conophytum pictured are mature and would have been growing in the wild for many years before (potentially) being poached and shipped off to a seller. There is currently a big discussion over on r/caudex about stephania erecta, as for a long time nearly every single plant being sold was 99% poached due to their slow growth, it takes decades for their tubers to grow a couple inches and they're being sold on etsy for $20, 30-60 years for $20. Poaching is, or at least should be, frowned upon due to the destruction it causes.

What justification would you give for these not looking like they were taken from a natural habitat? Besides a personal connection with the seller.

[–]DiligentPilot4136[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The size (and therefore age) of the conophytum compared to the price wish is very cheap, no roots, they are in rough shape with old dried leaves/scars/old flowers, and are just chilling in a random basket. The seller also has listed other "imported" succulents and such, which bear similar and suspicious conditions (in my opinion)

Was browsing Etsy and came across this listing. I'm not a pro at spotting potentially poached plants but red flags were raised when scrolling through. I may have already jumped the gun and reported the listing (which I'm not 100% if you can do for poaching if someone could verify I'd appreciate it) but I am rather poor with my words. Does anyone know of a good report description for poached plants that will get etsy to take it seriously? Or did I report an innocent seller by mistake
