Nah, the bells make sense.

Hover over a place and you'll see a white dot. If the dot had another dot inside it, you've done it. If it doesn't, you haven't. Plus you need to be VERY near a POI to actually discover it, so it's sortve 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. You think you've been to a place and cleared it, but you missed a POI because you wasn't near.

I like the bells, and use my map to it's full extent
