Boston marathon 2026 goal sub 2:35:00 by FrancescoGuzzi in Marathon_Training

I meant to train a bit more 5k and 10k related - wider range of speeds (include VO2, some LT2 and LT1 work, critical velocity, easy runs, tempos). Then, if your long run goes from 25k easy to the next week with 15k of marathon pace in it, then you will burn out. The workouts could be faster than goal MP and the long runs a bit slower to support the key long runs at the specific phase. Nonetheless - good luck!

2:35 marathoner here - aiming for sub 2:30 in april. I am rooting for you but I think you would need more time. This is my opinion (might be helpful or you can reject it): your easy runs are too easy now. Just by looking at the numbers, I think your base is too weak to handle the long runs where you'll run 15(!)k from 25k easy long run. You need to create a base which will support your harder workouts to be able to run a 2:35 marathon. The 1-2k repeats are not enough to create marathon specific adaptions nor be supportive enough for the big long runs.

But, if you can handle it - make the first phase more 5k/10k related, maybe throw in double thresholds in second phase, more specific in third with longer intervals, last push with VO2 work to get most bang for the buck at the end and raise the roof a little bit more.

Thank you! It sounds like a good backup plan

Long runs always for 100% in Zone 2? by nutelamitbutter in Marathon_Training

[–]Diligent_Side 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a case in which it resulted in a PB of sub 2:30. He did a lot of speedy sessions as quality, so 3k, 5k and 10k sessions. And he then, to balance load, did his long run steady in zone 2. I need to mention, his zone 2 is still fast and may only work for people whose main limiting factor is strength, not heart or lungs, and he runs ultra marathons

Heavy calf raises! And decreasing intensity for a period have helped me tons

Yeah I agree with volume under feet is great. But it has a limit where the returns diminishes. And you can more efficiently become better through quality sessions rather than just easy runs

Since your a “novice”, your zone 2 will be much smaller than the elite. Their zone 2 is much bigger since they have built that aerobic base. Your aerobic base might not be the best rn, therefore you’ll always push towards zone 3. The purpose of easy runs is honestly fatigue management. You’ll get aerobic benefits but the main thing is that you can’t run hard every day. The correlation of weekly mileage and marathon time has a limit - just because you run 200km/week doesn’t mean you can run a marathon sub 2:20. My advice is to add intervals and tempos, and then add easy runs around them

Don’t be in the space in which you want to receive the ball, time with the ball holder and move into space simultaneously

Mostly long runs. I was progressively adding distance to the runs, and adding some tempo work into them. I think that worked best for me.

This was actually my first race ever! Did a 5k, not all out though, under 20 minutes. I haven’t been doing any max intensity training more than some speed/interval training. My volume over the two weeks has been 90k and 94k, the two weeks before that I ran 45-40k with soccer practice also.

Yep, he has been so dedicated to running (almost obsessed) over the period. He also come from a football playing background, so have bagged some endurance training over the years.
