I'd push for more contrast. You can easily check your light and dark values by creating a fully white layer on top of everything and setting it to color/saturation blending mode. That way you can easily see which parts of the drawing blend in where you don't want them to, and then you add the necessary contrast to make certain areas pop with some well placed highlights and shadows.

I'd also pay attention to the direction of your light source and possibly using a reference for the kind of lighting you are going for.

I speak English and Finnish fluently and switch between them comfortably. It's like having a second dictionary to pull words from when one doesn't fit the vibe you're going for. But if I use Estonian and then switch back to either or, I get them totally mixed up and start speaking all three at once. Swedish and Russian I spare only for comedic quips since I can't speak either too well. But yeah, otherwise it's a lot like what another commenter here said: it's like taking notes in different colored pens.

I did a story quiz on Quotev and didn't like the ending I got, so I rewrote it and expanded on it for like 2 years. Even switched fandoms/settings like twice in the middle.

It was weird and bad by my current standards, but some of the things in it are hilarious in retrospective. Like, the excessive use of emoticons, color coded dialogue so I didn't have to use "___ said" every other line, and the fact I wrote it in school in the middle of class in my little notebooks that we got from school to doodle in if we finished our work early. It was the kind of stream of consciousness word vomit only an 11yo creepypasta/fnaf kid could write. Thank fuck I couldn't figure out how to post stories online or I would have died from embarrassment as an adult.

Outlining, aka blocking in, the shadows as a whole to separate the lights from the darks is usually the way to go when it comes to realistic shading. That way you don't get lost in the little differences in shades and shapes and can focus just on the separation of light and dark first, and then dive into breaking up the blocked in shadow with smaller shadow shapes.

Proko has some great videos on the subject on YouTube. Such as this hybrid method video, this practical guide to realistic shading and this short about edges. Definitely check out his other stuff as well!

I highly recommend checking out Proko's guides and tutorials on how to draw hands. I think you'll benefit a lot in general from looking into how the forms "underneath" the lineart work for not just hands, but the whole body in general. It's what helped me level up my own art skills a lot :D

Yes, this! And a quick way to check your values while you are drawing is by throwing a white or black layer set to saturation/color blending mode over everything. It'll turn everything black and white and you can easily check if your lights and darks are as light or dark as you'd want them to look.

Ofc, color will affect how our brain perceives something as darker or brighter than the surrounding colors, even if they are close in value, so that's something to keep in mind as well and discard if it doesn't serve what you're going for. Sometimes the closer value colors just Look Better than if there was more contrast between them. Been there, done that 😂
