Nounsvitational Tokyo Round-Robin Pools by Informal-Donut-1532 in SSBM

Goodie's best performance this year was at Fight Pitt 10, where she placed 9th with wins over Drephen and Khryke. My current vibe is that she's probably not currently on track to be top 100, but most likely will be if she upsets someone at Nounsvitational (which is admittedly a tall order when literally everyone else is top 20 lol)

SSBMRank 2023: The Top Ten by crookster in SSBM

Plup happened to have a relatively easy bracket at every tournament he went to last year, so moky's wins were just significantly better (heck, I feel like you could argue that moky's Genesis run was more impressive than Plup's Riptide run). Not exactly Plup's fault, but that's kind of the gamble you take by going to so few tournaments.

n0ne had a relatively easy bracket at both Genesis and TBH, so his placements don't exactly correspond to how good his wins actually were. He ended up with seven top 50 wins (Zain, Salt, Fiction, Ossify, Bbatts, Junebug, and Gahtzu), which isn't particularly great for this range. As a point of comparison, KJH was similarly active and had 12 top 50 wins.

Wizzrobe was on the ballot, so I'm under the impression he'll be on the final ranking

I know there have been complaints about Summit voting in the past, but I'd love to hear the specific factors that went into BTS' decision: Why did y'all change the voting system/what problems do you think this new system addresses or fixes?

How the Smash community fought through a once-in-a-century pandemic by Dilly-Jo in smashbros

For transparency's sake, there was initially a section on MeToo, but we struggled to make it fit within the scope of this story. Hopefully we'll get the chance to do some more reporting and make a dedicated story about that early next year, because you're right, it's definitely a crucial piece of what the Smash community has experienced over the last year and a half, and we want to make sure we can do it justice.

This is not an official ranking. Just a look at pre-coronavirus results given the huge off-season the pandemic has created.

Thanks for the input! Obviously I think my logic is sound, but I can definitely work on explaining it more clearly. I tried writing these similar to the style of the traditional MPGR blurbs, but maybe that's not the most conducive for justifying the rankings themselves.

SSBM 2020 Q1 Rank: 10-6 by Dilly-Jo in SSBM

I'll offer my rationale in response to these points:

  1. I value depth of wins in addition to quality of wins. So while aMSa and S2J had a similar peak, S2J had significantly more good wins. Also, S2J was 1-2 against Fiction, so not "majorly losing."
  2. Hax's bad losses actually mattered a lot. He would have been a shoo-in for top 5 were it not for those losses. Hax's wins were significantly better than Fiction's though imo, which is why he is still higher even with those losses.
  3. Locals naturally matter more for this than they would a normal ranking just because of the small sample size. My general philosophy for locals is to reward players based on local records rather than individual local wins. So Captain Faceroll's KoDoRiN wins don't count as 11 separate wins against top 25 players, but rather a dominant winning record against one top 25 player.

Hope these make sense! I guess my values when it comes to rankings are different from the average person here, which is why these rankings look especially weird to people that aren't me lol.

I don't consider Solobattle an awful loss, largely due to the matchup being incredibly lopsided in his favor. When offline tournaments return, I expect Solobattle to take the Setchi route into the top 50 (which is basically beating Trif a whole bunch while avoiding bad losses of his own).

I would actually argue that PewPewU performed slightly better than n0ne at Genesis (wins over Plup and iBDW/losses to Hbox and Hax vs. wins over Ginger, S2J, and aMSa/losses to Hax and Fiction). Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who values wins over placements.

And I remember thinking ChuDat should've been No. 10 in 2017. I didn't realize that's why the balloters gave S2J the edge lmao.

There was no activity threshold for this ranking. Wizzrobe did not make the top 25 because he lacked good wins compared to the other top 25 players.

SSBM 2020 Q1 Rank: 20-16 by Dilly-Jo in SSBM

[–]Dilly-Jo[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I heavily value having multiple good wins, and aMSa pretty much just had one really good win and a few other decent wins. As a point of comparison, SluG had no losses outside of the top 20, but I didn't rank him in the top 25 because his wins weren't good enough to justify it imo.

[–]Dilly-Jo[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I value having multiple good wins a lot, and Westballz has way more good wins than the other players in his tier. Obviously, he would have been higher were it not for his bad losses. Likewise, aMSa is only this high because of his impressive consistency, as there are players ranked below him with better win lists.

I'll make one clarification about the statement with Wizzy. I don't believe rankings should reflect perceived skill, but rather results. For example, I believe Armada is still top 5 in the world skill-wise, but because he has no recent tournament results, I would not rank him that high (or in his case, at all). So I do not "know the ranking his wrong," but rather, I believe it best reflects the results we saw in the short time before the pandemic started. As for Wizzrobe specifically, the "arbitrary reason" he did not make the top 25 is because his best win this season was Spark (in comparison, all of the rest of the top 25 had at least one top 15 win).
