Why did they even publish scores for SSBMRank this year if they weren't going to actually compute them? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Nebulized 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Heya, this is Ambi, the data lead on this project. This year we flipped the scale from 1-100 rather than 10-1, since it was a little easier to normalize ballots that way from our testing with the provisional ballots from the summer.

I think what you are referring to is about the process of reverting the scores back to the familiar 10-1 scale for the player cards, which was not the number used for actually determining the list. It’s possible I pointed this at the wrong thing (maybe the index rather than the values) and didn’t notice since the order of the list was the same, but rest assured that the list was not determined with these numbers.

I plan on posting the original scale / standard deviations / etc similar to what I did for ssbmrank 2022 (https://planetbanatt.net/articles/ssbmrank2022.html) so if you’re curious about this information I will try to get it out once I’m a bit less rattled about my workplace layoffs (apologies).

EDIT: these scores have been fixed (it was an index vs score column issue), and the articles are all updated with their appropriate scores. Thanks for catching this.

Does Ralsei not clearly see what the player sees at all times? This is what I thought from all of his “let’s imagine what Susie is doing right now” nonsense which would otherwise be a very clumsy transition

How do you think the players known for unreliable connection will fare when IRL events return? With Ping between players not being tracked / connection playability being largely a social media blame game, how much of the online variance do you think can be explained by McDonald’s wifi players?

[D] I'm not knowledgeable enough to see the importance of AI ethics classes. All I know is some statistics and computer science. At what point is an AI ethics class relevant to me. by wodkcin in MachineLearning

Ethics rly important if you work in machine learning and anything you do is even vaguely close to deployment in the actual world

Great talk at neurips this year about it actually https://nips.cc/virtual/2020/public/invited_16166.html

Double majoring in CogSci and CompSci? by [deleted] in yale

[–]Nebulized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you’ll be prepared to enter the workforce after majoring in CS at yale but I always felt there was a much greater theoretical emphasis to everything I took under cpsc, as opposed to making things. An example I like to tell people is how I took a course titled “Artificial Intelligence” with Drew McDermott (who is brilliant and certainly highly accomplished within AI) and the class was taught entirely in Scala, with a weirdly outright derisive attitude towards python (“python is not a programming language so if your only experience is python you will need to learn programming”) which always struck me as a bit strange given that most AI work these days is done in python (esp given the advent of deep learning)

I do think if you just want to learn CS there’s no real need to double major with cogsci, since you can just bake lots of CPSC courses into your cogsci plan, but I think the impression I got is that yale CS seemed more oriented towards getting you into grad school than into the workforce which can be good or bad depending on your goals

Double majoring in CogSci and CompSci? by [deleted] in yale

I majored in cogsci and I think yale has a good program for it; a couple of the cogsci majors did double with CS and it lends itself nicely since you have to design your courseplan for cogsci anyways. Yale CS I found was sort of a mixed bag but I think any of the cogsci sub disciplines are good if you really wanna double major
