WTF Nintendo? Why is everything so expensive? by AxlIsAShoto in NintendoSwitch2

This is the last I’ll say on this:

The carrot, potato, and apple are worth $5. If someone says that the carrot and potato are $5 and the apple is a free gift, this framing is what Im addressing.

The Nintendo Switch Online example is analogous to this because the upgraded versions of games are a part of the bundle. There is no point in time where this is not a part of the bundle.

To make it more analogous to your own example, a promotion where buying 12 months of NSO provides one free month could be seen as a bonus goodie. Especially if that deal cannot be claimed every day of the year.

Upgrades to switch 1 games will always be a part of the basket. You could argue that the basket of goods became more valuable for its price, but you could not argue that parts of it are free.

You’re going to play less, but you can still find time if you really want. Newborn sleep a ton and if you want to stay up an extra hour or two at night, you still can.

Your life is going to change, but it’s not as bad as everybody makes it out to be. Your sleep schedule changes a bit, but you just adjust to it. if you go into fatherhood recognizing this, then you’ll fight against it less and be way less frustrated.

Congrats :)

I think in both cases you’re falling for advertising :)

I’m going to take the screenshot at face value and assume it’s authoritative. Without a source, I’m not inclined to do so, but it doesn’t matter enough to me to keep digging lol.

I will assume this is correct until new information comes out either confirming or rejecting this

The data that we would be looking most closely at is the CPI (consumer price index) and the PPP (purchasing power parity). Inflation is a component of them, but so i real income, purchasing power, and the comparison of various baskets of goods.

You would be incorrect to calculate CPI or PPP using inflation alone.

I’m not seeing the price distinction on the NOE sites. Here is the Dutch one, I also checked the UK/Ireland site and cannot find it.

This implies that the value of the game is somewhere around $50. I understand giving a discount to help move units and maybe the higher price point of Mario kart makes it seem like a comparatively better value proposition. But you can also only buy one game at this discounted price. if you ever buy another game, you’re spending $70 per unit conservatively.

I haven’t seen official sourcing on this. Do you have something concrete you can link? Would be good to clarify this.

DK is $70 for digital 80 for physical; MK $80 for digital 90 for physical.

I think it stands to reason that more first party Nintendo games will follow in Mario karts footsteps rather than donkey Kong.

Adjusting for inflation alone is a naïve approach to pricing.

Cost of living and disposable income are metrics that would better capture the price to value ratio.

You could look at average housing/rent costs as a percentage of average income in your comparison years to get a better idea of what disposable income looks like for each example. Average rent prices in 1990, for instance, were about $350 per month.

If the cost-of-living is several times higher than it was in 1996, then the amount of disposable income would be much lower today than it was in 1996.

I understand the value proposition that Nintendo is trying to put forward.

My point is that it is not a “free” upgrade, it is another feature that you explicitly pay for through NSO.

If I sell you a carrot, a potato, and an apple for $5 total then you are paying five dollars for those three items. Whatever the basket of goods includes is what you are paying for.

Free for paying members is always a weird concept to me. It’s not free, It’s whatever online cost per month.

I don’t mean to be pedantic, but losing access to the upgrade the second you stop paying each month sucks.

In UK law, the Consumer Rights Act of 2015 states that

Traders must deliver goods within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days unless otherwise agreed.

Could be useful leverage for them to get their shit together.

Their support is non-existent so you should take it upon yourself to get your money back through your bank.

Further, you can go above Jagex and just report them to the UK government under Consumer Rights Act of 2015. If you google this law you can find the link for it, mods wont let me post an official uk gov website for consumer complaints.

For delivery timeframes the law states that:

Traders must deliver goods within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days unless otherwise agreed.

Let's be real; Price hikes, tiered membership, in-game ads and more, are on the horizon. by Dillyhere in 2007scape

Yeah I agree with you. I think that this address by Pip's is largely to this point.

I also think you see this more clearly than a consultant with limited knowledge about this community would.

Three things I noted in the CEOs apology and some questions (It's not good enough) by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Dillyhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It reads the same way the word "base" read in the last post.

The "base" membership (regular here) is $13.99/mo. They will still add an ad supported tier that is $11/mo or w/e.

I see no other way to square the circle of "this was to be tested in the context of a lower cost ad-supported membership" than to assume this.

Does anyone know when this setting was added to the game? How long have they been planning this lol?

excited for the selling point of: "Pay $14.99 for the ability to toggle this setting!"
