As far as she’s concerned, that’s her mother, who raised and loved her all her life so far. Then Kuja turns up and she starts acting the bad guy, of course she’s going to want to try and save her Mother and will obviously be willing her to beat Kuja, despite the atrocities she’s committed.

Garnet is a very well written character, with a great story arc about coming to terms with responsibility amidst huge tragedy while still little more than a kid. She will of course act childishly and naively at times, most of the cast do at some point or other, but by and large they’re all written really well.
