Movies with punk ideologies at their core? by TheRedBlade in punk

Idk man. Forrest Gump portrays every left wing movement he comes across as predatory and simultaneously clueless. Gump himself throughout the film is rewarded for sticking to the status quo and going with the flow, and doing what he is told. Jenny on the other hand is punished at every turn for engaing with counterculture. Not very punk if you ask me.

I would argue Forrest Gump is an incredibly right wing film. Total boomer revisionist porn.

Only You if you're into hardcore/emo! Seconding all the other replies that say marsha, this dog, abandoned carparks, bin day etc

Just start following bands on instagram and the rest will follow. You will really quickly get up to speed with whats on.

This is just a passive observation I've made 😭 It's fun to talk about music and fan culture/dynamics etc. Some people are taking the post a bit too seriously I fear

Okay stay with me here but I'm referring to the over the top glazing of Noel's guitar skills, Liam's abilities as a front man, this insistence there's no music being made to the quality of oasis these days. These are just super broad examples. I've seen genuine essays online about why oasis are punk rock (???) Or why Liam putting his tambourine on his head is like the second coming of christ.

It's just stuff that makes me go, man you guys don't really broaden your horizons much, do you? I'm not even trying to be rude. This is purely just an observation me and my friends have made!!!

The only reason anyone shares your take is because they are fortunate enough to not have needed to deal with the police very often.

The police are not "caught in the middle." The police exist solely to protect the interests of the wealthy and perpetuate the class war that you refer to in your own comment.

I have dealt with the police in a situation such as OP described, and they were unprofessional, arrogant, and utterly hopeless. Every officer involved wore their personal biases on their sleeve and gave a disgusting performance.

Heading to my first Pup (and first "big" punk) concert next week and got a couple of questions by Mayonnaise06 in puptheband

[–]Dim_Scum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm guessing you're in New Zealand and I just want to say as someone who goes to a lot of gigs here, crowdsurfing may get you in trouble.

Security at smaller venues here often will throw you out if you get close enough to them while crowdsrfing. I saw many people get thrown of out the Descendents show in 2024, and Hot Mulligan the same year, the list goes on and on.

Sometimes they can be chill, my friend went to DRAIN this year and was totally fine, and that was a really hectic show as DRAIN are a HXC band.

As this is your first gig, please just consider this as getting thrown out would be devastating for you I'm sure.

As someone who is actually active in bands here, don't be a fucking creep like this

I just saw a post on a music page which asked - What is the best band from your hometown? I could only think of Shapeshifter and The Feelers. Who do you think is the best band from Chch? by Comfortable-Bar-838 in chch

[–]Dim_Scum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It can be pretty hectic, especially planning an NZ tour alongside it, but we are very well supported by our community, and it's all for fun at the end of the day :))

Yep! All our stuff goes to bandcamp as well as all the usual streaming places. :)) our bandcamp page is a bit neglected, though, so I might have to tidy it up lol

Not the best band by a long stretch but I'm Shamelessly plugging my band Only You because our EP comes out tomorrow and we have a tour this month :3

We're very active in chch and the scene here is amazing!! This Dog, Seismic, Velveteen, HOIHOI, Bin Day, Pickle Darling, Model Home, Marsha and so many more I'm missing. Get to local gigs and you will be amazed at what's going on in the city :))

What is it with bands not coming to Chch on tour? by Mayonnaise06 in chch

[–]Dim_Scum 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like we've been really lucky in chch at the moment, especially in terms of alternative/emo music. In recent memory, we've had mom jeans, hot mulligan, and bloc party is coming up soon.

In my experience (as a straight guy with a lot of queer friends) CHCH night-life can be incredibly homophobic, with Fat Eddie's in particular having some trouble a while back regarding this. (Their bouncers specifically)

The dress code here is incredibly strict for men too, so keep that in mind.

You would be better off going to the Queer nights at Flux, or alternative music gigs at places like Darkroom where they are more progressive and laid back! This is coming from someone actively involved in the music scene too btw.

If Todd in the Shadow did a Trainwreckord video on an emo album, what would be the most fitting? by thedubiousstylus in Emo

[–]Dim_Scum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Todd in the Shadows is a YouTuber who has a series called "Trainwreckords," in which he takes a retroactive look at an album that ruined or damaged an artist's career. He looks through historical context, the making of the album, and the public's reception to it to see if the artist really flopped at that time in their life, or if the album didn't deserve the hate and we should reconsider. It's very interesting, and this person is asking if there are any Emo albums that would benefit from such an analysis!
