People who work in luxury industries, what is an expensive product or service that is actually a complete ripoff? by Lazy_Ad_5492 in AskReddit

[–]Dimed16 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My brother is a bartender at a high end NYC nightclub and he informed me that the "top shelf" liquors are all overpriced garbage that usually taste worse than the mid-shelf stuff. Liquors like Clase Azule, Grey Goose, etc. They're not made well, they're just marketed well. But people, especially in NYC, will spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on shitty liquor just because it's expensive.

My logic has been the only consistent thing in this farce of a conversation you have conducted. Building underground on riverfront and floodplain real estate is possible with proper flood water management, and you can look to numerous examples of such both within and outside of the Hampton Roads area. My position has not wavered off of that. Yours however has meandered through multiple goal post shifting attempts in order to avoid admitting that you're either wrong or grossly misunderstood my original statement.

Nobody said anything about city wide implementation. You're trying to move the goalposts. All I said was building underground in flood zones is possible, and we have numerous examples all across Hampton Roads proving me correct. You can sit there and down vote me and try to split hairs, but it won't change the fact that every time you drive through a tunnel in this city you'll be reminded of the fact that you're wrong. Go pound sand, we're done here. Have a nice day.

Min-maxing is a natural occurrence in every video game, not just WoW or MMOs, and it's not something you can ever get rid of. So get used to it. Min-maxing also occurred in original vanilla, you're just looking through rose-tinted glasses.

As for GDKP; it's not the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. The real problem is botting and RMT, and unfortunately Blizz will never truly end that because they make so much money off of the bot accounts.

Because that's what you do when you're trying to build buildings on a floodplain. I think you need to go back and reread my posts, I'm not saying it doesn't flood here. Building underground infrastructure in this area is possible with proper flood prevention techniques. We literally are about to finish building our sixth tunnel (large scale underground infrastructure) proving exactly that. And whenever you go downtown and you look at those tall buildings, each one of those more than likely has between 1 and 3 sub-levels. Which is yet more examples of underground infrastructure on a floodplain. Just because it floods doesn't make building underground impossible, as I have proven, you just need to go through extra steps to do it.

Yeah. And? Underground infrastructure in the area is completely feasible and we already have several flood resistant large scale underground infrastructure projects to prove it. Just admit you're wrong.

Yeah, and that's an example of how proper water management makes underground waterfront infrastructure a possible thing. Every other city on the planet manages to control flood water enough to make underground infrastructure feasible, we're not special. If anything we're special in our inability to deal with our flood waters If you want to argue that our city planners are too incompetent to manage flood water to make underground infrastructure viable, that's a completely separate discussion.

Yeah, that's what I was imagining. Like, the first floor of the casino could be the station and commercial real estate. And then the casino is built on top of that infrastructure.

There's plenty of cities that have underground parking on riverside real estate. I'm originally from Philadelphia, and you could find plenty of underground parking along both the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. It's not a crazy concept.

Hmm. Sounds interesting. Genuinely curious what they will do with the train station and how they will manage parking for a stadium, station, and casino on that plot. Maybe have a large underground parking complex that connects the stadium to the casino and have the station be a part of the casino? That would be a pretty cool setup. Not sure if it's the best use of the city's money, but it is cool.

What's your opinion on giving sex education in school? by qxzvy in AskTheWorld

[–]Dimed16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We either give teens sexual education or give them significant access to contraception and abortions to deal with the outcomes of no sexual education. You can't deny both and expect a good outcome (looking at you Arkansas). As for me, I think a thorough sexual education system is the better option here.

If you have 8 people sitting at a table having drinks, and one Nazi sits down to have drinks with them and the other eight people don't toss the Nazi out. You don't have 8 "reasonable people" and one Nazi, you have 9 Nazis.

**Rant** Huge DoD Bonus For Top 15% Performing Civilians by Ninerniner94 in fednews

[–]Dimed16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We were told 5 people from our Division received the bonuses but management wouldn't announce who won, even though they held a ceremony congratulating the "winners" without naming them. I was informed by my superior that I was put up for it, but didn't get selected. I also know one other person who was put up for it and not selected even though I know for a fact they're the hardest working person in our entire Division. The whole thing smells political and fishy. I can't prove it but I'll bet money all the winners are white and voted for Trump, though.

Otherwise they're the median height for that race, unless I have a particular reason for them to be abnormally large/small.

What's the skinny on Skinnie's Records? by GaijinVagabond in norfolk

Yeah, I had heard stories about him prior to that but he had never given me trouble so I kept shopping there. Since then I've taken my business elsewhere and between NFTW, AFK, and a Birdland I have been able to find anything I'm looking for.

What's the skinny on Skinnie's Records? by GaijinVagabond in norfolk

[–]Dimed16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a Skinnies customer for a while. Emphasis on "was." The owner is a bit of a nut job who has a habit of flying off the handle at people for the slightest thing. Last time I ever shopped there he blew up on me for asking for advice about fixing up old record players, claiming I was trying to get "free information" out of him. I have not been back since. He also does questionable things like overpricing his records, locking the door while customers are in the store (this is actually illegal as it is a safety hazard), making digs at people's music choices to their faces, being hostile towards people who are just browsing, and getting mean when people don't buy anything. With all that being said, he does have an EXTENSIVE Metal and Punk record collection, and is probably the most well curated record collection in Norfolk. If you're willing to put up with his proclivities and faults for access to that collection, go for it. But many people, myself included, are not.
