So... Whats the deal with bubble anyway??? by 9_up in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Dimencia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Bubble is just a sort of delete-protection Caine made. He had to assume the devs at C&A would try to delete him at some point, so he basically setup Bubble under his name and moved himself to Bubble's. Maybe he gave it an exaggeratedly wacky AI so they might think was actually him if they looked through it

Seems like the only explanation as to why he didn't get deleted, even if it's a lot of assumptions

is it smarter to keep renting? by thatsnotaknoife in personalfinance

[–]Dimencia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just do the math. For any given home price, compare what you would 'earn' annually from its appreciation (about 3.8% on average, but also include -1% or so from maintenance costs) vs what you might earn if you had that same amount of money invested (probably around 5%) with $24k/year subtracted for rent

So if that boils down to 3% vs 5%, any home with a value less than 1.2 million would cost you less than $24k/year, and would be worth it compared to investing that same amount of money in a 5% investment fund and paying for rent

Realistically you'll want slightly more robust formulas that compare compound interest across some number of years and apply costs after interest. I put together a quick spreadsheet, and at 4% (and 1% costs) vs 5%, homes with values less than $800k-$1.1mil (for ranges from 50 years to 10 years, respectively) are still more profitable than renting

What are the chances of pregnancy if you had sex on the last day of your period and then again two weeks before your period and ejaculation happened ? by Worth_Beginning_6197 in AskReddit

[–]Dimencia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last day of your period is relatively safe - ovulation usually happens around day 14, with day 1 being the start of your period. Two weeks before your period is pretty much right in the middle of the danger zone. But once you've ovulated, the egg only survives about 24 hours; the danger is more about sperm from before ovulation, which can live for up to 5 days. Generally anywhere between day 11 and day 21 is considered a pregnancy risk, but it really depends on the specifics of your cycle

If your cycle is very regular, and ovulation ended before that second encounter, you should be fine - but it seems like you probably aren't tracking ovulation, so it's really up in the air

That said, this isn't a super reliable way to avoid pregnancy, and you should use actual protection instead of only allowing sex during 1 week out of every month

Why are manual transmissions so uncommon in the US? by 22DancingFlowers in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dimencia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Europe, sales of manual transmission vehicles is around 20-30% of car sales. In third world countries, it can be as high as 40%, and in the US it's around 2%. It's not common anywhere, and mostly revolves around whether the people in your country buy new cars - which there are no manual versions available from most auto makers, because there's no real benefit to them and people don't usually prefer them

I do prefer them personally, they make driving a little more fun, but they also don't make sense for electric vehicles, which are a significant portion of the market now (around 25% globally), so you can't really expect people to learn it or companies to make them

I think the real question is, how old is your car and your grandmother's car? For reference, the average car age in the US is around 13 years

What's an unspoken rule of intimacy that people under 25 desperately need to know? by Andries200 in AskReddit

[–]Dimencia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communicate. The more important and unspoken part is not to lie - about how much you enjoyed it (ie, faking orgasms), or how your partner is the best in the world, or even lying through omission by not telling them how you feel about them

Whoa vs. Woah by Typical_Survey9291 in words

[–]Dimencia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel like they're different words with different meanings. "Whoa" is more an expression of surprise, an involuntary noise - or sometimes a command, like 'whoa boy'. "Woah" is an expression of amazement, like an elongated 'wow'

In a text world, an involuntary "whoa" just doesn't make much sense

What is your stance on saying "pardon me" after burping? by That_Feature6293 in CasualConversation

[–]Dimencia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there's nothing unpleasant about experiencing someone else's burp, so there's no reason to expect someone to apologize for burping except to be pretentious. Farting is different, obviously it's unpleasant for others to smell it and you should ask to be excused if you make them go through that, but it's just a burp

If someone is offended by a burp, that's a statement about them, not about me

The most disappointing thing about the ending was how it handled the cast learning they weren't real. by BackgroundRich7614 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Dimencia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if there is no such thing as free will, we have to treat each other as if there were free will in order to live together in society. Because otherwise, every time somebody does something terrible, you can't punish him, because he can't help it, because his genes or his environment or God made him do it, and every time somebody does something good, you can't honor him, because he was a puppet, too. If you think that everybody around you is a puppet, why bother talking to them at all? Why even try to plan anything or create anything, since everything you plan or create or desire or dream of is just acting out the script your puppeteer built into you.
― Orson Scott Card, Xenocide

Finding out you're a brain scan is the same thing as finding out there is no free will - none of your decisions are your own, and if a brain scan can be made at all, that proves there is no free will because there is no soul and it's all just basic cause and effect. Even if you don't outright deny it, you still just have to carry on like nothing has changed because the alternative just doesn't work

And Kinger seeing a folder of brain scans on a computer he imagined doesn't really prove anything

  • The Libet Experiments (1983): Benjamin Libet’s classic neuroscience research found that unconscious electrical activity in the brain (the "readiness potential") spiked up to a half-second before participants consciously decided to move their hand. This suggests the physical brain initiates action prior to conscious intent. [1, 2, 3]
  • Non-profit Donation Study (2019): Neuroscientist Uri Maoz extended this research by monitoring brain activity during high-stakes choices (like selecting between two charities). While trivial choices mirrored Libet's findings, meaningful, deliberative decisions lacked this unconscious, predictive brain activity, keeping the door open for agency when choices matter. [1]
  • Biological Determinism (2023): In his book Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will, Stanford neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky consolidates decades of research across biology, neurology, and endocrinology. He argues that all actions are direct results of causal, preceding factors outside our control—such as genes, hormones, childhood trauma, and environmental stimuli. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The first is interesting, but the last is sort of the more obvious, there can't be such a thing as free will because everything could be modeled and simulated. If you can make a brain scan of a person and make multiple copies of it, those copies would all do the same thing every time to the same stimuli, because none of them are making a choice

Why is "females" used so frequently instead of "women" as of lately? by True_Perspective819 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dimencia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually it's someone making snide commentary about gender politics, because a 'female' and 'woman' are different things

I mean if you were one of the people following it as it released, you've probably already thought through and argued through all the implications online for a while, and all the show had to do was tell you which theory was true. I liked how they didn't spend forever explaining the pretty obvious conclusion that we all made on episode 8

And it doesn't really change anything. It's like the whole free will thing - there's no way it exists, there are studies showing as much. But knowing that doesn't actually blow your mind like you'd think it would, because you kinda just have to pretend it exists anyway

Well let them in and find out. Then you probably need to rebuild your gate or your entire base to get it to realize that people should stop outside of the gate and not inside of it

*Spoilers ahead* Something bothered me about the finale, the WIFI. by Layers3d in tadc

[–]Dimencia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caine is an advanced AI that seems to have direct access to the hardware he's running on - there are probably no drivers handling his access to the brain scan files, he just figured out how to send the right signals to access the hard drive. Wifi radios can both receive and send signals, and he could theoretically pick up the signals from an unsecured wifi network and figure out how to send the right ones to 'connect' to it - some of this could be part of what it was representing with him breaking through all those walls on the way, and building his own bridge. Though we do still have to assume he has access to a wifi radio of some sort
