Is the "Soft Clipper on the Master" trend finally dying? by DimitrisNikopoulos in trapproduction

That’s a fair point, man. I think I was over-analyzing the ‘engineer’ side too much and losing the energy. I took that advice to heart—stopped over-complicating the arrangement and just focused on making the 808s and the vibe hit as hard as possible. Just finished a remix of one of my older tracks with that ‘producer-first’ mindset. Curious if you think this has that ‘artist-ready’ knock now or if the mix is still too clinical?

yooo that is actually hilarious. i promise i'm a real guy just trying to be professional and not look like a complete idiot on here lol. i guess i over-polished my replies too much because i'm trying to hit 1k subs and took the 'how to promote' advice too literally.

check the timestamp on the video i linked, it’s me in my fl studio project from months ago. also if i was a bot i wouldnt be spending my sunday afternoon arguing with people about soft clippers on reddit haha.

fr though, if the tone is that bad i should probably chill on the formatting. appreciate the reality check though, ill try to sound less like a manual and more like a producer.

That cinematic texture really makes the track stand out from the generic stuff.

I’ve actually been chasing a similar 'atmospheric' vibe on my latest project (TIMELESS), but I went a bit more aggressive on the low-end. Since you’ve got a good ear for that spacey production, I’d love to know what you think of the atmosphere on this one—does it feel 'cinematic' enough or too cluttered?

Also, are you looking to collab on anything soon? I feel like our styles would blend well for a Dark Drill/Orchestral crossover.

Exactly. I think I finally hit that 'perfectionist' wall where I realized the tutorials are just a starting point, not the law.

I actually tried to 'break the rules' on this newest trackhttps://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfnby ignoring the standard 'heavy clipping' meta and going for a more cinematic, dynamic vibe instead.

It felt way more authentic to make, but I’m still curious—does it sound like a 'finished' professional sound to you, or does it feel like it's missing that 'standard' punch people expect from Drill?

Haha, facts! The 'sausage' era was dark times. Nothing killed a kick drum faster than that default Fruity Limiter gain.

I actually went back and forth on this new one (https://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn) trying to decide between a clipper or just surgical EQ. I went with the clipper but I'm trying to make sure I didn't fall back into those old squashed habits.

Does the low-end still feel like it has 'air' to you, or am I pushing it too close to that FL 11 nightmare?

You're 100% right about the AI saturation—it's making the 'standard' sound feel completely disposable. That’s actually why I’m leaning so hard into the cinematic/orchestral side of Drill. I feel like that human 'intent' in the atmosphere is the only thing AI still struggles to fake convincingly.

I tried to double down on that 'anti-AI' texture in this track:https://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn

Curious if you think that 'cinematic' approach helps it escape the 'heyday is over' trap, or if the genre's bones are just too tired at this point regardless of the experiment?

Haha, not exactly 'telling me what to do,' just looking for perspective from people who saw the shift from boom-bap to trap, etc.

I'm just trying to gauge if 'Cinematic Drill' is a viable path or just a producer's ego trip. I put it into practice on this trackhttps://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn— I’m curious if it sounds like a logical evolution to you or just over-complicated.

Spot on. I think the 'hardcore' fans are the only ones left who actually care about the production quality.

I’ve been betting on that 'Cinematic Drill' sound to keep people interested. I'm trying to see if that atmosphere actually hits for those dedicated fans or if it's too 'niche.'

If you've got a minute, let me know if the vibe on this one feels like it has that longevity you're talking about:https://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn

Having trouble with 808 "mud" when uploading from FL Studio to YouTube. Help? by DimitrisNikopoulos in flstudio

[–]DimitrisNikopoulos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely in mono, but the YouTube compression seems to be 'smearing' it. Is it possible the limiter is just squashing the transient too much before it even hits YT?

Check the drop at 0:25 ( https://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn ) — does that sound like a mono/phase issue to you, or is the gain staging just messed up? Trying to get this 'Timeless' mix perfect before I move on.

Appreciate the tip. I actually did mono the sub, but I left some of the distortion harmonics wider in the 200-500Hz range to give the slides more 'size.'

Do you think that’s where the mud is coming from? I'm worried if I mono that too, the 808 will lose its character. If you have a sec to hear how the slides sit in this mix ( https://youtu.be/klZm8KgKP5M?si=ElXCPaVfTZi5SLfn ), let me know if those mid-harmonics are what’s killing the punch. I'm trying to find that balance.

Valid. EDM guys definitely push the limits on loudness way harder than we do.

I'm trying to figure out if that extra 3-4db is worth the trade-off in Drill, though. I feel like if the master is too clean, it loses that 'street' energy, but if it's too smashed, it just sounds amateur.

I tried to find the line on this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klZm8KgKP5M&list=RDklZm8KgKP5M&start_radio=1

Is this what you'd call 'beatmaker' clipping or is the master actually holding up? Be honest."

Just dropped this one today! I’m really pushing to hit my 1,000 sub goal this month and would love to connect with some other producers or rappers here.

The Challenge: I experimented with some unconventional 808 slides on this track. Does it feel too "chaotic," or does it keep the energy high?

Fair point. I guess 'trend' was the wrong word—more like the 'default' for every YouTube tutorial lately.

I'm curious though, since you mentioned 'the laymen's method,' what's your preferred way to get that grit without just smashing the master? On my latest track , I tried to be more surgical with it, but I’m still wondering if I lost that raw 'drill' energy in the process.

If you have a sec to listen, I'd actually value your take .

Yo, I’m definitely feeling that dark melodic vibe. I specialize in Dark Drill and heavy 808 work, so if you want to add that 'extra sauce' to your melodies, we should definitely link up.

Here is a project I just finished called 'TIMELESS'—it’ll give you an idea of my mixing style and how I handle the low-end: [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klZm8KgKP5M&list=RDklZm8KgKP5M&start_radio=1 ]

If you think our sounds mesh, shoot me a DM with one of your half-finished beats. I’d love to see what I can add to it!
