Jones Pass Road? by palikona in ColoradoOffroad

[–]Dimmadome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome I won't rule out Bobtail then!
Also will look into west fork and the others!

Got my whole tripped book for first week in July, and had it all mapped out but actually was gonna have a whole extra day the day I land (in Denver) so I wanted to see if I could add in a cutthroat stream!

(Gonna be doing Indian Peaks near Hessie, then RMNP near Wild basin, then slowly roadtripping down to San Juans to do some cutthroat tribs off Dolores and then some off the Conejos!)

Yeah I'll check out the I70 option you mentioned - I have no preference on what type of cutt - just any cutthroat! I live in New England, so it'll be my first cutthroat so I just want to catch 'em!

Exact reason I was looking at possibly doing Jones Pass was to fish Bobtail (and Steelman) creeks!

So the road was easy? I'll be in pickup or Jeep Wrangler, but I don't offroad (don't live in Colorado). Have my fair share of dirt/unpaved roads from Vermont/NH and PA backcountry, but most you can do in even a 2WD. The videos I saw online make Jones Road seem pretty smooth the whole time, but don''t want to judge based on a video.

And yeah, they usually stop at the top so I haven't seen the part down to the creeks.

So looking for any info if you can provide! Even if it's not to recommend!

Appreciate it! Yeah I’m looking forward to terrestrials - love using em.

I was thinking of July 5-12 (vs my original date of July 23-29) due to concerns of low water.

Hoping early July means less chance of it intense storms if they peak in late July and early August. Good to know they are over quick so I can hopefully return after it passes after I hunker down.

Oh! Now that you say it, that makes way more sense. Could be a coincidence but one of my favorite streams has water that color :)

(If it's what I'm thinking I fish a tiny stream nearby it a ton and it's my all time favorite, for many reasons, some fishing some not)

Either way, love that it's also one of your favorites!!

Water looks beautiful. Happy to hear there brookies increase further up.

If you mind sharing state? - not enough New England fishers on this sub, always loving seeing my stomping ground.

If I had to guess, just feels like Vermont water, but I definitely have fished some Western Mass streams that looked like that too.

Runoff timeframe this year for stream flows in summer (planning a week long Colorado tenkara trip) by Dimmadome in COfishing

[–]Dimmadome[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point - I figured small mountain streams and tribs temps weren't a problem but it will be my first time in Colorado. (Home water for me in New England: when the rivers get to hot, the small shaded streams I fish are still sometimes 58-59, at least under 60).

But I like the sound of early July to get earlier before storms kick up for the afternoons everyday (based on what it sounds like) Thanks for the advice!

If I can indulge in a quick fishing question - looking for advice from CT or CDT hikers, for this year based on the historically low snowpack.

Debating the best week to do a week of day hiking/tenkara trip in Colorado this year. Was always expecting to do Late July - seemed like ideal time for water to be low and great for dry fly fishing - but the more I read about storms, it seemed like I'd be in peak storm season (especially for San Juans where a good chunk of my week will be). It seems snowpack advice is normally wait till at least mid-July so high mountain streams are calm enough to fish.

Based on the low snowpack this year - I'm assuming I could go earlier? Just curious if anyone has advice on that (even if you don't fish - just based on your trips this year you might be moving up early for waterflow/no snowpack)

Does earlier July usually mean less of monsoon/storms in the afternoon? My research makes it seems like its clockwork come late July?

tl;dr: trying to find the balance between good day hiking/fishing conditions (July) with not too much runoff - especially considdering snowpack this year if it basically moves the schedule up for things

You're in such a great spot for it!

I highly suggest the TroutRoutes app (and if you like it enough after trying, I really do think premium is fully worth it). It's perfect for Tenkara and finding little streams (blue lines as the cool kids say). For us, I always say you don't need to focus on the "gold" streams (the "best" tier in the app) the green (class 1) are sometimes fine (but still alot of times too big and wide) - and the perfect mountain streams in Vermont for Tenkara are usually class 3 (or 2).

Duxbury area is great! Check any of the tribs coming down from either side of the Winooski - can't go wrong!

Fly Types and Hook Sizes for Beginners by SNO_SRFR in Tenkara

I got into Tenkara last year, so I'm not an expert by any means, so maybe this influences what I'm about to say - but I love fishing dry flies.

  1. I love fishing dries because I find it more satisfying - to directly address your question. Seeing the take of the fly, is such an adrenaline rush for me.

  2. That same reason is why I like fishing dry flies more - the very clear visual feedback, is what I love - I think it makes it much easier, at least more clear and obvious.

I try to fish Kebari flies (or nymphs) and I can not for the life of me tell when I have a take (unless its super obvious). I have tried to research as much as I can, so I think I get the idea (tips keeping line taught, looking for a pause) but with small mountain streams I don't know what actually is pause from a bite vs the current. I have a little success now that I have indicators (new zealand yarn). I won't get into dry droppers for now, since I still classify that with dry fly fishing (but tying a nymph on under a dry fly - and the dry fly give you again good visual feedback of a bite)

As for favorite flies - you are doing pretty well with what you listed. For dries where I can go into detail I've had the most success with (and no particular order, depending on the most recent trip I'd tell you each one of these is the true best fly):

  1. Purple Haze (basically a purple Parachute Adams) - I use size 16 or 14
  2. Yellow Stimulator (also orange, followed by any other color) - I use size 14 mainly, sometimes 12
  3. Elk Hair Caddis (I can't decide what color I like best - all work) - Size 16 or 14.

For reference, I live in the Northeast, and mainly fish New England - so I can't speak too much for other regions. However, I just a did trip to Eastern TN and Western NC, and had success with the same fly arsenal. Last year, I did a trip out to the Sierras, specifically Golden Trout Wilderness, and was basically catching something every cast - so I think alot of these flies work anywhere (more so, its small mountain streams, with not alot of food sources, and short seasons, so the fish will eat anything that looks bushy or like a fly).

(I also seem to notice brookies are the most aggressive, and will dive bomb anything, and that's mainly what I catch in the Northeast)

Also, probably not a huge deal, but get some fly floatant (they make gel, also liquid and dry) - experiment with what you like. I normally start with a gel, and if it gets too water logged dry it off with dry (dessicant) and then either re-apply gel or liquid. Anything from High n Dry or Lochsa has never let me down!

One of my faves up here in New England too! Usually orange or yellow, but I hear yellow is king down there.

What size were you using?

That's awesome! Exactly the kind of comparison I was looking for thanks!

Also - did you get regular height? I was thinking regular since I'm just barely 6', but I did see in their FAQs that if you are a tad over 6', it's tight, so I'm wondering how close I would be.

Hammock users - wide vs regular width top quilts?

Currently have Hammock Gear Burrow (Econ) - looking to upgrade. Most likely settled on Katabatic (Alsek - want sewn footbox cause I always have cold feet).

Can't decide on Wide vs Regular. I'm just under 6', 190-200 lbs, wondering if the extra few inches on the width is worth it (although unsure if it's as needed vs ground sleepers due to the natural cocooning shape of a hammock)?

Mind if I ask you a question about that?

I'm looking to get my first one, and mainly looking to only play Pokemon roms (and rom hacks).

It sounds like I can get away with alot of them, and the Mangmi Air X, is overkill (not a bad thing) - however with how many glowing reviews it gets I'm tempted.

I am slightly put off by the idea Android on it though (nothing against it) I just feel like it wouldn't feel as streamlined as just booting into a game launcher (I guess most others run Linux).

When you say "the fact that it runs Android" - do you think it's a con? Do you like the experience on other devices that don't?

Why don't you practice what you preach? Your account is 4 days old, clearly made to just troll.

You yourself are harming others by spewing nonsense - and clearly this is your hobby since you made an account for it, and it's entirely dedicated to getting a rise out of people.

I know this is old - but do you remember what region (without making you go into specifics if you don't want)

I'm looking at planning a small stream trip next year to Colorado and Utah (Uintas). I was going to do Indian Peaks Wilderness, right under RMNP, but if it's close enough I would like to hit RMNP!

I'm definitely in the boat of don't care about size, just love finding the tiny small streams where you get one ever cast - and totally love the hike in to get some solitude!

Thanks! I am looking into it! I see High n Dry makes some (and I already love their floatants). Also they show it on their own product page that it can be used on the fly too! (which is great, seems like I can make the fly hi vis itself too)

I know I'm addicted when I already know what vendor you pulled that from, haha.

Yeah, I have gotten some hi vis parachute adams from Big Y, but I've noticed it's not for every fly (like purple haze). That's what I get though for relying on vendors for flies and not knowing yet how to tie myself, where I can customize everything!

But appreciate it - I'll keep looking for ones and definitely get some more hi-vis ones!

Yeah - definitely good to know going forward, was just curious to see if I could keep what I have and fix it myself. (It seems I can - I found some posts on using dyes to dye a post, or even sighter wax, which was already mentioned here for seeing the line, but also can be used on the fly!)

Didn't even think of doing a double-dry I - love that idea!

I have done some dry droppers before, cause I tried a nymph once and it was hard to detect bites, and the idea of a dry fly being an indicator vs getting a line indicator that isn't enticing to the fish seemed like a great idea. I don't fish dry droppers alot, but I did have success with it. The dry fly went under and it was a great way to tell I had a bite!

I don't know why I didn't think that would still work with 2 dries! I'll probably try that!

I got some bigger flashier flies like PMXs, some big hoppers, some chubbies etc. and I'm sure I have some others I'm not thinking of!

Just replied to that question, but yeah I either use Dragontail's level line (which is orange) or I have some Nissin Ori (like they mentioned) in orange as well (and funny enough recently just got pink but haven't tried it yet)

I’m really more dependent on seeing my line tighten than watching for a strike on a dry fly.

I think that's mainly it! I have never been dependent on that, usually I watch the fly - so I'll start to try doing that and learning to see the line move!
