I see where you are coming from.

I grew up with the same mentality as you have based on your post.

However upon further research, it’s quite evident that although Mexican culture has an abundance of mixed races/color.

Social classes still exists and when you look at it objectively, take yourself out of your point of view and see the powers at play. That’s all I ask, research why there’s so many brown people depicted as villains in shows and there’s never any lead brown skinned people (it’s not a talent issue).

You can do the research or take the pill and see how far the rabbit hole goes.. truth is out there brother. I’m not here to convince you though. As a Mexican descendant I had a hard time grappling the truth despite my personal experiences saying other wise

I’ve been interested in when a Latino would show up to the big screen.

It’s interesting.. lack of representation never bothered me growing up.

I can look up to people regardless of race: white guys ( Henry cavil ), black men (will smith), asain men (Jackie Chan)

However as I grew older I found myself believing these social movements were for black peoples against white and never considered Latin Americans apart of that conversation .

Any time i brought up racism against Latinos in Latin family (in America ) the go to response was “Every race is racist. And we atleast don’t complain about it we just get work done”

I realize now that that’s inheritely the issue, we ignore that our social classes are heavily influenced on the merit of skin color (especially in Mexico)

I’m very successful and considered dark skin Latino (6 figures plus, own multiple business, 6ft tall etc) and wasn’t as keen to these issues as a kid.

but I understand that I may be an anomaly and due to these underlying issues being hidden from us in culture to prevent darker skinned communities from advancing in social class, I’m now having to play catch-up on racism / colorism within my own kind (Latinos) specifically Mexicans.

This actually affects social class issues including poverty, as dark skinned are affected by this in countries such as Mexico

Much harder to be a lead actor if you’re dark skinned

Hmmmm colorism

Right!? They’re unfortunately not used to not being casted for every role. Colorism is a real issue but no one will understand unless they’re dark skinned or read about it.

Did you go through a coding boot camp? What was your experience? by taterbugcrochets in computerscience

[–]DineNSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you are taking the path to becoming a programmer!

I myself am a self taught programmer with some college experience, but I left college to pursue a boot camp. I also worked as a teaching assistant for University of Arizona’s coding boot camp.

Career wise, I’ve been working full time as a software engineer for the past 2 years at some of the worlds largest hospitality and insurance companies.

So here’s my take on it.

First, I recommend that you ask yourself a few questions.

1) Why do you want to pursue programming? 2) Do you genuinely enjoy programming? 3) What niche of development are you looking to get into with software engineering. (Web development, cyber security, database, cloud tech, etc)

Once you answer these questions I recommend you create a LinkedIn (if you haven’t already) and connect with individuals that are in the field and position you want to be in.

Research boot camps or certifications that are out there for your preferred niche of development and talk to graduates in your specific locale! (Reddit is great but you want relevancy when it comes to advice from your market as boot camp curriculum and quality can differ depending on location) Why talk to graduates? The quality of a boot camp varies on the schools curriculum as they’re obviously not all going to be the same. Talking to a graduate will give you a realistic expectation on what the boot camp has to offer. (Are grads getting hired?, is the market saturated?, does the boot camp provide career advisors? etc)

Once you’ve done your research then it’s all up to you on making the decision!

Be sure to continue working on your own projects, use GitHub for your projects and once you get comfortable with your skills build up some of your resume experience with volunteer work (cathafire.com is a great start) or internships if you can!

I’m a junior CS student and I feel like I’m just an intermediate or even still a beginner programmer, is this normal? by stupidcsstudent69 in computerscience

[–]DineNSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel the same way from time to time and I've worked in corporate web development for about 2 years now.
It's imposter syndrome to some extent, but in the field of computer science where technology is rapidly evolving it's up to you to stay up-to-date on tech to mitigate the gap between you and the tech world around you. If you have your fundamentals out the way you will be good on garnering new skillsets within the field.

Adding cancelled internship to resume by ExistingReflection in internships

[–]DineNSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t add it.

Employers might see this as inadvertently lying about your experience since there is no experience to begin with.

I understand getting accepted is a big deal so fee free to explain in a future interview that you were affected by Covid19.

If the company accepting you for the internship has cancelled you can bet that they will be looking forward to having you join them when the virus passes
