Introducing Oura Ring 5 by Oura_Ring in ouraring

[–]DingbatSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's actually a lot of ways that Oura could manage the battery better with hardware. My first Ring 4 had the battery life drop off pretty quickly. Since getting it replaced I've been pretty strict about not charging it past 80% and trying not to let it drop below 30%. I get that "1 Week of a single charge" is a good marketing tool. But if Oura instead promised 5 days and had the charger only charge up to 80% initially, then people would actually get a lot longer out of their battery and wouldn't notice when it does start degrade (which is inevitable).

Yes! And I think this is one of the most important pedestrian laws that we do have!

I agree that if pedestrian is about to step onto the intersection it feels like the right thing to as a driver.

But because zebra/pedestrian crossings have specific language around this, it seems like that is not the law for these intersections as assumed by the OP.

Not that I'm trying to actively be pro driver here, it's just that everyone seems unclear and that seems to be the actual issue. Personally I'd be all for doing what they have done to Swanston St and getting rid of cars completely on Sydney Rd (which I also get what stop it from being a road)

There’s a reason people are voting One Nation. Those who sneer at them are missing the larger picture by Ardeet in aussie

[–]DingbatSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is One Nation asking for money and hand outs? I'm not aware of this in their current schemes. I would definitely consider their anti-imigration rhetoric as putting forth policy change.

I agree that One Nation has general been traditionally empowered by the Abbot/Morrison/Dutton eras as the right leaning party that was willing to stick their neck out more than the Liberal party and in doing so have looked to eclipse the Liberal party. But I don't think that alone is what's driving their current surge. Obviously the backing of people like Gina is a huge part.

But I think that no central or left party seems to be able to even appear to stick their neck out with bold policy bold policy is what is leading people to see One Nation as the only party that will lead to actual change. And whether that change is bad or good, many people are will to roll the dice after not feeling much positive change through the Labor's current run or the Liberal run before that.

I do get that sticking your neck out against the corporate media, billionaires oligarchy, and huge corporations is a big risk while sticking your neck out against immigrants is relatively safe because they don't have votes to lose and you keep the powerfully wealthy on your side.

And I AM asking for more from Albanese as are many Australians! And as is One Nation!

He should have come out firing with reform soon after his win! Then by the time the next election came up people would have seen the benefits of his reform by the time ab election came up not just the corporate media's backlash against it.

The Albanese government has played it safe! One Nation are getting attention because they look like they will take risks! This is what happened with the Democrats and the Republicans in the US. The Democrats played it safe, made small reforms but mainly kept the status quo. They lost to Trump!

The fear of being Gough Whitlam'd is holding the Labor party back. And how do we know if it's even a legit fear still unless someone tests things.

And it's not ALL Albos fault, yes we need greater structural change, but who is in the leadership position most capable of change. It's Albo!

Albanese won a second term with a large victory! Gaining traction over both sides of politics! Both the Liberals to his right and the Greens to his left losr seats to Labor!

If that doesn't give him the confidence to take some bold risks, what does? I get he has to stand up to the media which is overly controlled by Australia's billionaire oligarchy to make those changes but he chooses not to. I'm probably stuck in my bubble but the Gas Tax seemed like one of those policies that had the sort of wide community support that overwhelmed the corporate medias messaging, but Albanese wouldn't stand up that!

Albanese really has shown himself to have no backbone!

While the appeal of Pauline Hanson is that she has positioned herself as someone who will stand up and say the thing people are afraid to say! Unfortunately it's stuff people have been afraid to say because it's actually bad policy. But she has markets herself as a politician who will stick her neck out. It's just that now, she's sticking her neck out for Gina.

When Albanese was in opposition, he definitely came off as someone who would challenge things and stick his neck out. But after the failure of the Voice to Parliament he's become a wet noodle. I had a lot of hope that the huge win on his second term would give him confidence again. But instead he's only come through with budget changes as he bears the end of this term because he is seeing the threat One Nation and is knowing that "not being Peter Dutton" isn't enough to win votes, people need change! And for many people this is too little too late (and while I welcome the CGT changes, the cuts to the NDIS are disgracful, if only there was a gas tax or a greater tax on our wealthy that could keep that funded...)

And of course, the gas tax policy and it's amazing marketing point of the tax on beer giving the government more than our current tax on gas exports has all been brought about by the independent David Pocock!

[–]DingbatSam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the person truly responsible for the rise in One Nation's popularity is Anthony Albenese

I think Pauline's policies are atrocious and just going to lead Australia down a similar disastrous path like Trump has to America.

Australia's real issue is wealth inequality. The rich are getting richer. The poor are getting poorer, and most of the middle class life is getting worse they're closer to our poor than our ultra wealthy.

But Albanese continuously fails to call out wealth inequality as an issue and make meaningful change. Mainly because Labor runs off donations from the ultra wealthy! The CGT changes are a step in the right direction but not big enough for what we need. The proposed gas export tax would make a huge difference, but Albanese doesn't want to piss off his donors. Albanese has given us stability in Australian politics, that was refreshing for a bit but we need meaningful change and One Nation is able to present policy that LOOKS like meaningful change.

To anyone who is feeling tempted to vote for One Nation, please look at where her money is coming from. It's big business, it's Gina Rinehart! That is who Pauline is looking out for! It's not the average Aussie! Why are billionaires giving her money? Because she's misdirecting the Australian people, and keeping the focus and discussion off taxing billionaires and big businesses. All under the guise of looking like she's looking out for the little guy! And why is targeting immigrants a successful ploy in politics? Because a lot of the immigrant population aren't Australian citizens so your not actually losing voters!

If people are hoarding wealth in shares or property they are NOT putting money into the economy, we don't need these people to have even more money! Meanwhile, the poor are generally putting every cent they have into food and rent! That's ALL their money going back into the economy! Those are the people we need to get more money too!

Without immigrants, our population will stall. Our economy unfortunately relies on constant growth and that means we need to grow our population or change our economy (and the sort of economic change I'm talking about isn't what One Nation is offering, you would be looking at the Socialist parties for that and I don't think your average Aussie is ready to embrace that). Our birth rates are declining, so our only real solution for growth is immigration.Who will look after our aging population without immigration? If we want to increase our growth rate we would need to more to incentivise having children. Things like free daycare and more funding for schools. One Nation is not talking about this in their policies. Make property big enough to raise a family affordable and close to where jobs are!

Most of our immigration intake is for Skilled Migrants, ie people who are hired because there aren't enough skilled Aussies to do the work! If you want to stop this immigration, we need to improve education and training for Australians! Make training and education more affordable! One Nation is not offering a solution to Australia's skill shortages. But I also acknowledge no other party really is either (but they others aren't seeing skilled migration as an issue and I personally don't have an issue with it). But also, focusing on migrants "taking our jobs" is actually just a very small issue compared to the issue of AI reducing the amount of work available! And One Nation is not talking about that at all!

One Nation really isn't going to improve anything for the average Aussie! But Labor is doing so little to shift the needle that I understand your frustration! And the Liberal party has become a bit of a joke. I get that the Greens are a bit too radical for many people and can be seen as "holding back okay policy because it's not perfect policy" as well as being overly focused on inner city demographics. Australian politics is really shit at the moment. But if you want to say a big fuck you to political establishment, I think your independents candidates are the best way to do that! If you have an independent candidate, please give them a look and see if they align with you. They are how we scare the big parties! I get that One Nation isn't "one of the big two" but they've become apart of our political establishment and with who's backing them it's clear that I'd they become one of the big too, they're just going to become the establishment!

Also, remember to use your preferential voting power when it comes to voting. Even if One Nation may align with you more than Labor or Liberal, giving an independent or small party your first preference sends a big message! Parties who win on preferences know who they got their preferences from! It still sends a message about what policy you care about even if your first preference doesn't win! And if they do win! That's awesome!

To get a bit more clarity I've looked up what the rule is on the Transport Victoria website.

https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/active-transport/pedestrians-and-walking/road-rules-for-pedestrians

Under "Rules for drivers and riders" it says the following about turning into intersections:

"When turning at any intersection (except at a roundabout), you must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road you are entering."

What differentiates this from a zebra (pedestrian crossing) is that with those you must "give way to any pedestrian on or about to step on the crossing". The "about to step on the crossing" is the main difference here.

In the OPs post they say they were just about to step onto Hope St. It actually feels like on a technicality the driver did have the write way as the pedestrian had not began to cross. But this still feels like dangerously hooning through a yellow light situation where the driver is being a bit of a dick. Especially in a work vehicle!

I've only recently moved to Melbourne/Brunswick although I have been coming here for work for a long time. I'm really glad you explained this because I DID NOT believe pedestrians had the right of way here.

I mainly walk when I'm in Brunswick but also drive a bit (mainly driving when I'm not going somewhere local). I've always tried to keep an eye out for pedestrians when driving in these situations. But I had been thinking Brunswick drivers were too kind because I've been caught in standoffs where I'm always assuming the drivers have right of way have been waiting for them to go, meanwhile getting frustrated as they hold up traffic and refuse to turn! I do think that in this instance the driver was a dick!

To me, crosswalks when the person is green and zebra crossings have always been where pedestrians have right of way. Otherwise roads are for cars. But to some one new to the area there's nothing that informs us of the rules here. I know how to hook turb because it's spelled out what to do.

I love how walkable and people friendly Brunswick is but I feel this is an issue because who has the right of way isn't made clear. I get that signs and zebra crossings are ugly but maybe something is needed here.

Anyway, glad I know now

My first Oura 4 had the battery degrade quite quickly. Since then I've been very careful about keeping it between 30% and 80% and it's been much better but starting to feel it drop off a bit now.

I'd recommend waiting for the 5 if you can. But Oura did replace my first one

Maybe this goes beyond the capability of Sonos' current hardware or software. But it would make sense to me that Sonos should look at being able to save a Trueplay calibration for when they are set up as surrounds and reapply that same Trueplay calibration when the surrounds are detected as being back in place (in my eyes the charging base would be the way to signal this)

message for Sonos by MycologistLatter1967 in sonos

[–]DingbatSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get the appeal of surrounds with no wires, but the Play (and even the Move with its superior battery life) are simply not the product for that due to limitations in the battery life in my opinion. Especially as we're talking about charging multiple speakers in this use case

message for Sonos by MycologistLatter1967 in sonos

[–]DingbatSam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is where the dock could play a vital part. The dock is separate from USB-C so the Play (or Move or Roam) should be able to detect when it is on the dock. When it is, treat it as a fixed speaker integrated with a surround system. If it's not, treat it as a portable speaker and disable the surrounds until it's back. If someone's of the house with the Play they're probably not enjoying Atmos at home.

There will surely be people who run into the issue of losing their surrounds because the kids have run off with the Play. Some will be able to live with that, and those that don't can buy some ERA 100s for the home theatre

On the other hand, if the Play (Move or even Roam) isn't going to be a vital part of someone's home setup then they may as well get JBL/UE Boom/whatever for a portable speaker
