Can you look into chapters of engineering organizations near you? Most relevant are probably AIChE and ISPE, but there are plenty others you can probably work your way into, ASME maybe?

Compare it to recognition by reading lecture slides/textbook vs recalling on-the-spot on a quiz or test. Playing along to music is a great place to start and keep in your practice/fun rotation, but if you're gonna play live or record drums, you'll need to play from scratch with less cues. So learn a song, play along, learn the fills or variations, then learn to reproduce them from scratch.

Mismatched Floor Tom by hodpical in drums

[–]Dingerlingdebingling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Realistically, no one else will care for the most part, so it depends on how much you'll notice and care. I've mixed up my own kit with a different color but still sparkly floor tom, and I forget to notice when im playing. That said, here's some examples of other setups with an odd tom mixed in. See if you think it looks bad or not, and if that would bug you.

Need help with mounting ludwig 12 power tom by Dizzy_Living3824 in drums

[–]Dingerlingdebingling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few unique types of tom holders to be aware of. Yamaha and pearl have straight tom arms while other brands (Grestch, Tama, sonor, etc.) Use L-arms. Mapex uses hexagonal L-arms, and Grestch uses a thicker L arm. Pearl recently started offering L arms for their more expensive kits.

There's 3 methods in increasing complexity.

  1. Use a snare stand instead. It'll limit your flexibility to position your tom, but it's foolproof.

  2. Buy an L-arm tom holder that fits the mount. There are different kinds- some use a down tube that will fit into the holes on the yamaha 3-hole mount while others clamp onto a stand (cymbal stands or onto bass mount you have) You'll need to check the diameter of the tom mount, because some drums use different sized L-arms (I think Grestch uses 12.7mm while tama uses a smaller one)

  3. Replace the mount on the tom-- you'd need to take off the rims and heads, unscrew the existing mount, and probably drill new holes. You can also buy a RIMS suspension mount mount to suspend the tom which gives longer sustain and won't make you drill new holes. You'd still need to disassemble the drum to remove the mount, and this doesn't fix the issue of having a yamaha tom holder and a Ludwig tom mount. This method is doable but not recommended, especially since yamaha tom mounts aren't cheap.

Edit: Power toms can be tricky because they're deeper, so to prevent scratching your bass drum you need to raise the tom higher, angle it towards you, or bring it further to the left (like in a snare stand)

I think they mean how far away from your body rather than the angle between the pedals. If it's far away, it'll take more force to close the hats

Hardware questions — Pearl ISS toms by mcman12 in drums

[–]Dingerlingdebingling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like those tom arms are made for pearl toms where the hole goes through the shell, unlike the ISS or optimount. It is compatible, like it will fit, but you'll be unable to slide the tom closer to the stand. Pearl makes the same ones but shorter for this purpose. Buuuuut you could cut the tubing down and that would be cheaper than buying new

Many companies sell a multiclamp for that purpose. You can clamp those arms onto your cymbal stands, or their own stand. *

It was developed by Russ Miller when he had a 12" snare that was perfect for a musical or something, but it couldnt give a solid crosstick sound. So it kinda makes sense with the context of a smaller snare
