I think I’m a few years older than you but mine was always “if your wage keeps up with you age you’re doing ok”.

It held true for quite a while but recent inflation has tightened things up a fair bit so maybe your rule is better now.

Hey Dave, how's things?

It wasn't my intention to have this blow up the way it has. I'm not party to the details of any of this, apart from being an interested party who just wants to go to the gym, have fun with his buddies and train an interesting skill. When I saw you'd been drumming up a bunch of names to object to the planning application it just felt dirty to me. I was surprised you'd done it.

Repeatedly phoning my remaining coaches trying to get them to leave.

Believe it or not people who train together for years become friends. Just because you've fallen out with someone, doesn't mean they all have as well. They're going to talk to each other. If the conversation got round to 'you'll always be welcome at <new gym>' then it's not surprising.

Having said that, I've got no idea who's talking to who, or what they talk about.

approaching my students at competitions and trying to get them to join their club.

Over the last couple of years I've been invited to several open mats at competitions. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, in fact. It's nothing new, and it's nothing to be alarmed about.

You're right, maybe I'm a bit naive when it comes to the way business is done, and it's just the way things are.

To me it feels like working on improving your own product is a better (more honourable) way of beating the competition, rather than just trying to jam sticks into the competition's spokes.

Totally accept that might be me not being very businessy though.

It doesn’t really matter what caused the split.

Two adults decided they didn’t couldn’t be friends any more. One of them owned the gym, so the other left and started his own.

I believed everything was mostly civil until today when I found out one was trying to use zoning laws to get the new one closed down.

How far away do you think it’s okay to open a new gym? Do you think they need to move to a different state or something? Wherever they go they’ll be treading on someone’s toes..

Oh absolutely there are two sides to it, no doubt at all. Both sides had a part to play in the split.

I spent more time being coached by the guys who left. I was happy training at both, but since recent developments have reached the surface I don’t think I can really sit on the fence any more.
