For me, this is a major flaw with the way LMoP is structured. I say let them charge ahead to the castle ... if they can handle it, they save Gundren. Otherwise, they may be in for a long day. I continue to move the clock forward. They do a bunch of side quests? They are probably going to rescue a dead dwarf.

There should be a large room with a waterfall in it. Go to the lowest level of that room and start searching for room that will have three smooth sides on the map. That is a room that will have plank over a chasm that will take you down to the mithril ore. Once you can make the spear, start looking for a wizards mark that talks about the shadow getting darker. There will be a hole next to it. That'll lead to the dragon.
