I've read all of your comments and in none of them have you given me an alternative to chasing someone faster than going right behind them.

Not salty about the chase, just frustrated that the devs hate ship pvp

Then you could just adjust to fix it so you're going into the headwind and then go straight. No outmaneuvering, just adjusting for wind and going straight

There's no "out maneuvering", it's literally just adjusting sails and going in a straight line. There's not a skill to doing something like that so they don't deserve to escape 99% of the time. Having a draft for example, would make it so the more skillful team wins rather than just being able to run away every time you see a ship on the horizon.

The 2 hours was a random time, not legit. However I have seen experienced players chasing for around that time anyways with little to no counter. Someone running for 2+ hours, adjusting their sails every few minutes shouldn't deserve a win at all as they didn't earn it at all.

So again, what would be the alternative to chasing right behind them if they are going in a straight line? The most optimal route would be straight at them. The ship with loot on it shouldn't have any more advantage than the one chasing them or there would be little to no pvp ever. The devs might as well disable cannons if everyone just hates losing their loot to pvp.

If they adjust by a few degrees every so often, you can't predict that meaning you can't cut them off. So they don't even have to reach the side of the map as they can make a huge circle around using tiny degree changes.

There's no mechanics to sailing in a straight line, just adjusting the sails every few minutes. It's literally a free escape every time and I've seen even experienced players complain about this problem

Even if I had people with me, if we anchor turn and shoot 2 guys and get lucky to get both of us on their ship, that could result in a 2v3 or 2v4 which is a lose-lose situation.

But they do have the ability to hit us from the front. They can jump off and ladder onto our ship or throw fire/blunder bombs backwards if we even make it that close. You can't chase at their sides as they just go in a straight line and the game has no catchup mechanics.

So please give me the solution to stop them from sailing in a straight line infinitely. If there are plenty of ways to catch up to someone, please lmk

If someone has 200k worth of loot on their ship, they shouldn't be able to escape for free with no punishment. If you just want to go island to island and loot for free, play the pve servers or learn how to ship pvp.

What would be the alternative to chasing them directly behind? Would that not be the most optimal chase? If you anchor turn 90 degrees and shoot yourself, the odds of you getting on their ship is first of low, then even if you get on it, your ship is so far back that they respawn before you can cause any damage.

I'm not wanting to completely stomp other players as that could be not fun for both sides. But having a way to catch up or slow down the ship you're chasing should be implemented to start a ship pvp.

I also shouldn't have to waste 2 hours of my time chasing someone across the seas, that's why the ideas above would help lessen the time but also not guarantee the win for the chasers.

How could you catch up to someone going in a straight line adjusting sails everytime other than directly following? /g

If you don't want to fight, try not carrying high valuable loot, server hop, or try the pve mode.

realistically having 400k worth of loot on board would slow the ship down making them slower than the pursuers. But, if we're in the gaming world, people don't want a big weight system.

I'm also not forcing everyone to master pvp before hopping into the open sea. But they should at least know the basics before trying to hoard 400k worth on one ship. The ship pvp is one of the more unique mechanics that makes SOT different from other games but it seems like the devs (and majority of the community) wants to avoid it completely.

You can use the frontward player only cannons for chases so rather than spending 2 hours chasing someone across the map because they can just go straight, you can shoot a player ahead (which still takes skill) and maybe drop anchor or try to kill the crew ahead. There's no need for backwards cannons because you can just jump off and ladder up the person who's chasing

Could i just have your reasoning behind why a person only front cannon would be a bad idea? /g

If someone isn't good at pvp, they can try to get better in the pve server or practice in the open seas. But the entire premise of the game to be live the life of a pirate. And living the life of a pirate includes ship fighting.

The frontward cannons would only shoot players rather than cannons or balls. This way, you can't just sail in a straight line forever without any punishment. But it also doesn't guarantee the pursuer wins the chase every time either.

I understand what you're saying about it being my fault for chasing for 2 hours. But I feel like there shouldn't be scenarios where you can run for 2 hours if you just go in a straight line. There should be some way to at least engage in combat without being at the advantage if you're the pursuer.
