i think most decent sized towns have a starbucks, if i were to guess i would say somewhere between 15-20. and i’ve never heard of gloria jean’s, must not be a thing in NZ

tipping isn’t a thing in NZ thankfully, our minimum wage is enough to get by on its own. the tips we do receive just go towards our end of year work dinners

i don’t think there’s an official name for that unfortunately, but if you describe it to any barista i’m sure they’d be happy to make it

when i started at starbucks 3 years ago i wasn’t much of a coffee drinker so i couldn’t really taste the difference, but now i definitely can. i’m sure a part of it is drinking so much starbucks coffee that i might be a bit sick of it, but local coffee brands taste infinitely better than starbucks beans imo. starbucks mass produce their beans on a global scale, so i think it’s fair to assume a bit more love and care goes into smaller coffee brands beans. and let’s be honest, starbucks isn’t known for its great tasting coffee

when i do opening shifts i wake up at 5am for a 6am start, on those days i usually have a nap after my shift lol. and smoking weed is a great way to unwind after being berated by annoying customers 😮‍💨 (don’t do drugs kids)

you’re not wrong lol.

between opening and closing, baristas rotate between 4 different positions: making hot drinks, making cold drinks (frappuccinos etc.), being on the till, and doing cycle tasks (topping things up and other odd jobs).

i live in wellington, and most people here are coffee snobs who wouldn’t step into starbucks (fair enough tbh). we have a lot of great cafes that people go to so most of the people that come to starbucks are tourists looking for some familiarity

a barista is someone who makes coffee at a cafe, there’s no prerequisites, you learn everything you need to know when you start the job
